Waiting for Big Daddy

No, not your pimp. The Big Daddy from Bioshock, which is coming to the PS3 soon, after having been on the XBox 360 for a year. However, while the 360 version fits on a regular old honest-to-goodness DVD, the PS3 version will come on a Blu Ray disc, and will feature a 5 GB install. Yeah, 5 gigs.

The install is unfortunately mandatory and amounts to about 10-15 minutes of installation.

While that’s not a huge deal, and it helps speed load times up, I can’t help but wonder if gamers should be at least entitled to a choice in the matter. What are we supposed to do a year or so down the line and we have to start deleting our MGS4 installs just to play FF XII.

Woo. Can’t even imagine what the wait on that gem is going to be.

What do you guys think? Should gamers be allowed to choose to install or not? Shouldn’t it be up to us if we want to deal with more substantial wait times, pop-in, etc? Or do you think it’s really not that big of a deal? My main thing is that, if the original Bioshock fits on a DVD, what the heck does the PS3 one feature that requires such a massive install?

  1. 5 gigs for a faster load time? That doesn’t seem worth it at all. Maybe it’s just a plot to try and make us buy hard drives.

  2. Wow, I didn’t know you have to install your games on PS3! It’s almost like a Computer!
Well anyway, they should allow gamers to choose install or not. It will save you money not buying your second PS3!

  3. Say they do give us the option of a slower load time for more Hard Drive space. What if each load time was say, the 10-15 minutes it takes to install it once? Would you still care about the 5 gigs? Thats another good question.

  4. True, but I can’t see each load time being something like that. We’d be talking single digit minutes for sure. Now, that would be an interesting discussion though, as to how long is too long when it comes to load times.

I saw this article. This game just went from my Xmas list to a rental from gamefly.

Installs should be optional. There was no need for an install for 360 players, so why should PS3 players have one? I have 10 GB left and I will have to upgrade soon, but I am in no hurry.

Soul Caliber IV had an optional install to improve load times. I didn’t install, wanting to see how long it was.

Load times between matches, not rounds, but matches, were about 15-25 seconds AT THE MOST.

    Totally not worth an install.

  6. MGS4 is brutal. 5gb in the first place then an uninstall/re-install onto the hard drive for each chapter! If the game wasn’t so good i’d be angry.
