Killzone 2 Preview Video

Well, with all the hype surrounding the game (at least in the gaming world if not on the tube), I figured I’d finally post a video of Killzone 2. Gametrailers recently did a nice preview of what the game has to offer, and it’s fairly comprehensive.

I have to say, while the Sony E3 video will live in infamy because of its pre-rendered footage, none of the footage in the actual game is CG. And man, the graphics are nice. Admittedly, the gameplay looks somewhat generic and the design is meh, but still, it can be a looker.

Review: Mirror’s Edge

me-1Last year, EA surprised much of the gaming world with several brand new titles that showed innovation and style, opening gamers up to the possibility that the company had turned over a new leaf. One of those titles was Mirror’s Edge, the first person platformer that puts you behind the eyes and in the shoes of Faith, a runner in a future dystopia. She climbs rooftops and leaps across alleys, and you control it all from her point of view.

One of the first things you’ll notice when you turn the game on is the design, the feel of Mirror’s Edge as you play. The city’s rooftops are pristine, clean and vibrant. The camera sways slightly with Faith’s run, and you can hear her breathe from the the strain of diving from platform to platform. Working together, it really does simulate first person in a way that I haven’t experienced before, and it is incredibly immersive.

Dude Creates Team Fortress 2 Dispenser

tf2dispenserI am maybe the least handy person in a world. I can’t build anything for crap. You should have seen my lame shop class creations. So that’s why I’m always absurdly impressed by the things that gamers come up with given the time, determination and the resources.

Take this guy, for instance, who built himself a real-life Team Fortress 2 dispenser. No he’s not a TF2 engineer, and no, it doesn’t give out ammo and health, but it does hold beer as well as all of his network equipment, such as his router and DSL Modem. It’s also got his phone and answering machine. Go figure.

So who wants one? Sign me up. If you’re interested in how he built the thing, check it out here, and if you’d like to see more pictures, check those out here.

Review: Fallout 3

fallout-3-zombie Having been a great fan of Bethesda’s earlier RPG series, The Elder Scrolls, I was eagerly waiting for Fallout 3 and their decision to make it into a FPS/RPG hybrid. Not having played any of the previous Fallout games, I was not concerned with any drastic changes they might have made, so this review will come from the perspective of a Fallout noob.

Review: Left 4 Dead

left4deadIf anybody knows anything about anything, they know that zombies are the glue that hold this world together. Or at least, that’s my view. Throw zombies at any crappy old movie/videogame/book and it instantly becomes a winner. Really, I’d be happy if everything had the undead rolling like waves in the sea, overtaking the helpless innocents.

So you can imagine my excitement about Left 4 Dead. Not only because it is chock full of zed heads, but also because it is the spawn of legendary developer Valve, those messiah figures turned game makers (if you can’t tell, I kind of like them). When you break it down, it’s been hard to argue with their track record over the last few years.

Boomer In A Thong Makes Left 4 Dead Sexy

boomer-thongBeing out of the PC gaming scene for awhile now (not by choice, it’s just that updating rigs is expensive), I sometimes miss out on one of the coolest aspects of it- community content. The mods, the skins, the updates, it’s all totally worth it to buy a game because over the course of a couple of years, you get what you paid for from what people add on.

It seems this is already the case with Left 4 Dead, as there are already mods and such for the zombie shoot-em-up. This one, however, just about made me pee my pants in laughter. The boomer in a thong. That’s right. He’s big. He’s burpy. He’s thongy. And he’s sexy as hell.

You should definitely check out the screenshots for a good laugh. Heck, download it yourself and get in on the sexy action. Anybody else seen some good L4D mods/skins?

Left 4 Dead DLC Soon?

left4deadLeft 4 Dead, how I miss thee. I’m in Tampa right now and it’s been almost a week since I’ve been able to slaughter hordes of the undead with my all-powerful assault rifle or pump-action shotgun. Soon though. Soon I’ll return to ridding the earth of these vile minions. And who knows, maybe something new will be waiting for me.

According to Valve writer Chet Faliszek (dude bra), some DLC is coming out for L4D pretty soon. Nothing too definite, but it does sound like it might contain some new “scenarios”, which I take to mean new campaigns. Which is kind of awesome. The SDK for the PC should be out at some point as well.

Unfortunately for those of us silly enough to own this game on the 360, the DLC is going to cost some money, while PC users get it for free. I think it’s totally ridiculous that MS insists on charging for ALL DLC that they release, even if the PC counterparts get them for free. It makes no sense at all to me, especially since I pay a subscription to XBL already.

So, who’s excited about more L4D?

Halo 3 Mythbusters

I’m sure many of you already know about this series, but I’ve been digging Halo 3 Mythbusters on YouTube for the past few days. In case you’re unaware, it’s a series where myths about Halo 3 matchmaking are either confirmed or busted through a series of tests, just like the show on Discovery.

It’s a pretty fun time, I guess since I’ve been getting back into Halo 3 this week. I know a few weeks ago I made a comment about people having mental deficiencies, but let’s just put that behind us.

Left 4 Dead: Death From Above

Left 4 Dead has sucked away much of my waking life over the last few weeks. The versus mode is intense, addictive and most of all, incredibly fun. While I suck at the hunter, I know that there are quite a few people out there that have mastered the impeccable timing required for the dreaded wall jump of death. This video highlights a dude with what some might call mad skillz.

Halo 3 Still Truckin’ on XBL

halo3xblSeriously? I mean, I get it, the Halo franchise is big and all. I understand that people like it, love it even. I fathom the power with which the game can hold you, transfixed upon its HUD. But what I don’t follow is how, with all these great games out, Halo 3 still tops the charts for XBox Live. Here is the list for the past week:

1. Halo 3
2. CoD: World at War
3. Call of Duty 4
4. Gears of War 2
5. GTA IV
6. Left 4 Dead
7. Madden NFL 09
8. Fallout 3
9. FIFA 09
10. Fable II

If you own numbers 2-4, and are generally playing Halo 3 more than those, you may have a mental deficiency. Just saying, is all. What games have you guys been playing online the most these days?

Mirror’s Edge DLC Trailer is Trippy and Totally Sweet

Not sure how many of you guys have gotten around to playing Mirror’s Edge, but one of the things that I hear a lot is that despite it being a lot of fun, it’s got some flaws. Namely, having to fight with soldiers as well as other crazy ninja parkour dudes, which is just not everyone’s cup of tea.

There is a new trailer out for the Mirror’s Edge DLC, though, that looks to be all of the fun of the actual game, minus the combat. To me, when I see this, I’m like, dang, I’d pay for a game that was just THIS. What do you guys think?

Ridiculous Super Sized Fat Man in Fallout 3

Like Fallout 3? Love explosions? Ever wanted to see 96 nukes go off at the same time from this super deluxe Fat Man v2? This is kind of awesome.

By the way, if you’d like to try this for yourself on Fallout 3 for the PC, download this dude and this guy.

New Riddick: Dark Athena Multiplayer Details

I’ve always said that if I could meet one famous person, I’d meet Vin Diesel, because I’m convinced we’d be friends. Seriously. He’s a true nerd at heart, and even knows some D & D madness. Needless to say, the opportunity to play as him in a video game is an exciting one indeed.

Some new details have started to trickle down about some of the new multiplayer modes in the next Chronicles of Riddick game, and they sound pretty interesting. Of course, you have the customary 12-man-deathmatch, where everyone gets their frag on. Beyond that though are some CTF gametypes as well as a prison riot mode, where several teams face off in a battle royale.

The coolest mode, though, sounds more like a Splinter Cell gametype, in that several prison guards hunt down one player (Riddick) in pitch black. They have flashlights and guns. He has night vision, blades and is awesome. This mode really sounds like it could rule. It’s nice to hear of something beyond the standard CTF or deathmatch. What do you guys think?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is Coming!

Color me shocked! Well, not really. But it’s still awesome to hear Activision announce Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released in Fall 2009, just in time for yet another mad holiday rush. While I hear that Call of Duty: World at War is a great game in its own rite, CoD 4 was just an all around incredible experience that gamers have been dying to relive all over again.

While there aren’t many details announced for the game just yet, it sounds like it might be a direct sequel to what we already saw in CoD 4. You won’t see me complaining about that as I really enjoyed both the characters and the story, which just built and built until it exploded.

So- who’s excited about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2?

Valve Reveals Sales, Most Impressive

Curious about how many copies of CS:S that Valve has sold? I’ll bet you go to sleep thinking about it. Well, today’s your lucky day, since Valve has just released a list of their lifetime retail sales worldwide for popular titles like Half-Life, Counter Strike, The Orange Box, etc.

While this doesn’t show exactly how much money and mad cash they’ve made from all of these awesome games that they keep providing, it does display that they sell quite a large number of them. About 32.8 million games, actually. That number is rather impressive. You know that’s more impressive, though? That number doesn’t include games bought on Steam. It also doesn’t include Left 4 Dead. So, uh. Add a lot more to it.

Check out a list of totally interesting numbers after the jump.

Gaming’s Best Guns

The time of the heavy hitters has come again. That’s right, the holiday season brings with it a tide of the blockbuster video games, and you know what that means? Shooters! Shooters out of and into every orifice that you can possibly imagine, waiting to unleash their tools of mass destruction upon your console or your PC.

Playing all of these recent titles really gets the noodle going, and it brought to mind visions of ordinance past, guns of yore, weapons that have entertained and slayed in the bygone days of gaming.

I wanted to take this opportunity to look at some of my favorite video game guns of all time. These range from the most fun to the most utilitarian to the most destructive that I can remember. They do have one thing in common, though. They all kick ass.

Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena Trailer Nerds Me Out

Not sure if many of you ever played Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, but it really was ahead of its time for an FPS. It combined platforming, first person fist-fights, puzzles, RPG-ish sidequests and was also the first XBox game to use normal mapping, and looked great for it.

It’s crazy exciting to me to see another game in the series coming out, though I think I wouldn’t mind seeing a new movie in the franchise, either. I may be the only one, though. Chronicles of Riddick may have been cheesy, but it was a cool sci-fi universe, darnit! Anywho, check out the trailer. It’s epic.

Black Mesa Source Trailer Is In-Freaking-Credible

Seriously. This is just too cool for words. In another case of “awesome fan made shizzle”, a new trailer has come out from the dudes over at BlackMesaSource, the Half-Life 2 Mod that re-creates Half-Life 1 with graphics straight from the Source engine. The result? I just made up a new word for it. Fantastic-ness.

Welcome to De_VanGogh

Last week it was Disney’s Haunted Mansion, this week it’s a map for Counter-Strike 1.6 made entirely out of crazy textures featuring Van Gogh paintings. Heck, even the skybox is an awesome shot of Starry Night, and it is just gorgeous to look at. I’d suggest you do so.

GamerSushi Asks: Left 4 Dead Stories

So Left 4 Dead is out and I’ve been playing the junk out of it. What I can’t deal with about the game (in a good way) is just how epic everything is when you’re playing with a group of friends, battling zombies in campaign or becoming them in versus mode. I’ve played the game for hours already with no signs of letting up anytime soon.

As you know, if you’ve played the game, the thing that’s just awesome is that each playthrough is different, resulting in wildly imaginative tales after your harrowing escapes. I thought it would be a good time to recount some of ours.
