Marvel vs Capcom 3 Trailer Tears It Up

If there are two demographics that are always open to crossovers, it’s comic book nerds and video game geeks. Honestly, growing up, if I saw that Batman and Spider-Man were appearing in the same book, I would pick that junk up post-haste. Same thing with video games. Super Smash Bros Brawl is probably one of my favorite party-fighters of all time simply because it allows you to play as either Sonic or Solid Snake.

Naturally, I’m a huge fan of Capcom’s crossover fighter series featuring the mighty Marvel heroes. Even though I routinely get my butt handed to me whenever I try to play it, I just can’t deny that having Ryu on the same team as Wolverine is incredibly awesome.

What do you guys think of the trailer? Very stylish, and there’s plenty of tantalizing silhouettes for us to puzzle over. I think I see Deadpool in one of the backgrounds. Anyways, what do you guys think? Excited for this game to drop next Spring? What combatants do you want to see slug it out?

SEGA Admits Mistake in Putting MadWorld on the Wii

madworldAh, the Wii. No other console in the history of gaming has done more to both bring together and tear apart the masses. While it is introducing a whole new generation of people to the joys of our hobby, the reception to Nintendo’s little white juggernaut by the enthusiast gamers has been nothing short of underwhelming.

Last year’s MadWorld, a black-and-white blood bath death match by Bayonetta creators Platinum Games, is a great example of the divide between the game’s target audience and the people who actually own a Wii. No one knows this better than Mike Hayes, President and COO of SEGA Europe, who recently commented that putting MadWorld on the Wii was a bit of a “mismatch”. He went on to elaborate why he thought that, in hindsight, MadWorld should have been a 360, PC or PS3 title.

“Clearly that was a mismatch with the Wii audience — particularly in terms of the amount of cross-ownership between Wii and the other home platforms. If you’re going to play a mature-rated game, you’re going to get your 360, PC or PS3 out to do so. But you can’t knock us for having a go.”

Street Fighter IV Ruins Thumbs on the iPhone

Hey, did you know that Capcom put a version of Street Fighter IV on the iPhone? I didn’t, but it certainly is an interesting idea to say the least. Check out the video below:

The port looks like it captures the game unique art style, and it seems to run pretty well. The control style is mapped onto the surface of the phone via touch controls that emulate a classic controller set up. What do you guys think? Pretty sharp for an iPhone adaption, eh?

Review: Assassin’s Creed II

ac2The first Assassin’s Creed was a love it or hate it affair. The game was, to be honest, a proof of concept more than anything else, a playground where Ubisoft could test out a really impressive graphics engine. The game rightly caught flack for its repetitive nature and the general silliness of its sci-fi overtones, but there were a lot of people out there who believed that the series had some merit. The game ended up selling fairly well, so the green light was given on the sequel.

Whereas the original game took place mostly in 1191, the second Assassin’s Creed is set during Renaissance Italy around the late 15th century. While you still control hapless kidnap victim Desmond Miles during some sections of the game, you spend most of your time inhabiting the body of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a brash young nobleman and banker’s son. The game starts off very similar to Grand Theft Auto where it walks you through a bunch of missions that teach you how the game’s mechanics work while setting up for the first big plot point. Some of the early missions are, admittedly, fairly stale but serve as a good introduction to the setting and some of the major characters you’ll be running across.

Ezio himself is far more likeable than Altair was in the first game. There’s no denying that Altair knew his business, but he wasn’t a sympathetic character. During the course of Assassin’s Creed II you’ll actually be rooting for Ezio as you pilot him through his trials and tribulations and, in a way, you’ll sort of feel like you actually grow with him. While the story does get kind of muddled around the end (I’m fairly sure the gaps in the plot will become downloadable content, but that’s just a guess), Ezio’s tale is full of likeable and hateable characters, and the writing and voice acting are both sharp.

Review: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

carnage-marvel-ultimate-alliance-2-screenshot
Mindless beat-em-up brawlers occupy a special place in my heart. First off, they’re the easiest games to pick up and play: just grab a controller and mash the hit button until everything is dead. Second, brawlers are awesome for co-op, especially if they are vested in a universe that both you and your co-op partner are interested in.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 takes its cues from a lot of different games and smashes them together with the Marvel universe in hopes that you’ll like the offering. It does have a lot going for it: the Civil War storyline that Marvel published a couple years ago is the main background for the game even if it does make a left turn at the corner of Metal Gear Solid 4 and go all nano-bot on us, forgoing the actual conclusion of the comic series. It is a lot better than the “cram everything in for fan service” campaign from the original Ultimate Alliance where you would be fighting Arcade one second then dusting up Mephisto the next. A more coherent story helps move the game along at a fairly brisk pace while keeping you engaged. The voice-acting is a little hit or miss, however, but the most painful gaffs are confined to the minor characters. Visual representation for the game is serviceable, as you always know what your looking at and your characters are easy to follow. It’s not the most beautiful game by any means, but it’s far from being the ugliest.

Ready to Get BrĂĽtal?

Are you prepared for Rocktober, the most heavy metal month of the year? If you are, brace yourselves for the opening six minutes of the Jack Black-starring, Tim Schafer-produced BrĂĽtal Legend, a journey through the most raging of fantasy worlds! No doubt you’ve already heard about some of the voice stars in this game-which includes Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister and Tim Curry-and you’ve probably heard about the various legal troubles that the game has had, what with Activision being a vicious font of evil and all that. Anyways, check out the video, which feature some awful “music”, surprisingly sober voice acting by Black, and a giant monster that reminds me of Mannoroth from Warcraft III.

So, who’s picking this up? October’s a packed month as far as releases go, but I’m making room for a little BrĂĽtal Legend on my calendar.

GamerSushi Asks: Gaming Thumbs?

fnr4There are some things that I think you all should know. Fight Night Round 4 came out last week. Fight Night Round 4 has realistic face punching physics. Fight Night Round 4 is a hell of a lot of fun. Seriously, I can’t stop playing this game. The legacy mode is deep and engaging, and your character even ages as you progress through scheduling your fights for the year.

However, one bad thing about the game is that it is giving me gaming thumbs. I think you know what I’m talking about. When you play a game so much that it starts to give you new callouses on your thumbs because you haven’t played a game like that in a while. Well right now, I’ve got those bad, because I seriously can’t seem to put it down. My brother came over the other night, and we squared off for nearly two hours throwing punches, dodging and dishing out uppercuts. It was heavenly and I highly recommend it.

So what about you guys? What was the last game that gave you gaming thumbs? Also, who else has played this game or wants to? Go!

Today’s Awesome: Team Fortress 2 Meets Smash Bros

We’ve all seen mash-ups, and while they are either hit-or-miss, this one is particularly sweet. Someone took the original Smash Bros 64 intro cut-scene and re-filmed it completely with GMod, using Team Fortress 2 characters. And it totally works. Definitely jealous of this idea and the execution. Team Fortress 2 meets Smash Bros 64. Who would have thought?

TMNT: Turtles in Time Remake

tmntMan. I don’t know how many of you guys played the old school side-scrolling beat-em-up Ninja Turtle games back in the day, but they were pretty much my favorite things ever. The original TMNT for the NES (with rocket-powered skateboards), as well as Hyperstone Heist and Turtles in Time were so stinking fun to play back then, I remember repeatedly renting those games and beating them in one sitting with my brother.

That’s why I’m thrilled to hear that a 3D Turtles in Time remake is underway, and is rumored to be coming to XBox Live sometime in the near future. If this is true, I’m buying that game the day it comes out and playing the junk out of it.

Who else loves this game and wants to hit up some 4 player co-op when it drops?

Fight Night Round 4 Trailer

One of the biggest surprises of this generation for me so for was when I first played Fight Night Round 3. It was pretty much the first HD game I played, and it looked stunning. But beyond that, playing it in a room full of people and beating the snot out of each other was such a blast, there have been few multiplayer games that have compared in terms of on-the-couch play. Needless to say, I’m really pumped about Fight Night Round 4, especially after the new trailer, which is comprised completely of in-game footage.

Anyone else play Fight Night Round 3? Excited about Round 4?

Today’s WTF: Mario Bros Vs Ronald McDonald

There are really not many words to describe this other than WTF. Apparently, Ronald McDonald wants to destroy Burger King. And uh, I guess the Mario Bros. want to stop him? Also, the Hamburglar appears. Just… wtf?

Debunking Video Game Lies

mk-ermacRemember back in the day, when there was nothing like PSN or XBox Live or Steam for you to monitor what your friends were doing and see their trophies or achievements? Back then, they could say whatever they wanted, and you had to take them at face value. There’s a dude named Ermac in Mortal Kombat, they would say. Or you can resurrect Aeris, they’d report. Lies!

Well, someone has finally decided to put a stop to all of the video game lies with the official Video Game Lies Wiki, which documents the many untruths that people cling to about their old favorites. It’s definitely interesting to scroll through some of the lists and see things that I recognize from my elementary and middle school days.

Definitely worth checking out. So which of these are familiar to you guys? Did you have that one friend (like I did) who always lied to you about things hidden in video games?

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Trailer: Taking Sides

Marvel Ultimate Alliance, while not perfect, was a rather fun superhero beat-em-up, especially if you had a friend playing through the game with you. I really enjoyed the story, and playing with an overpowered Wolverine was pure bliss. So imagine my shock when I saw a Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 trailer today, complete with a storyline ripped right out of the Civil War series that took place just a couple of years ago. Iron Man versus Captain America anyone?

Batman Gets Pwned

Ah, the thought of extraordinary people doing extremely ordinary things is always a good one. Take superheroes like Batman, for instance. Does he play video games? Perhaps he plays himself in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. If you imagined all that, you’d end up with this new short, Batman Gets Pwned. This video is cheesy and goofy, but it still made me laugh. Especially love the puns.

Today’s Totally Awesome: YouTube Street Fighter

Um, this kind of blows my mind. This YouTube video actually allows you to “play” Street Fighter through YouTube. Every now and then you’ll get choices like moves, characters, etc, all of which come in to play against your opponent. Wait too long to strike, and your opponent will decimate you. So yeah, YouTube Street Fighter. What will they think of next?

Street Fighter II in LBP

Ah, the obligatory “someone put x in LBP” video, but even still, I never get tired of them. This LittleBigPlanet level features Street Fighter II’s Ken, Ryu, Zangief and even Blanca, engaging in battles. Pretty creative stuff, and yet another reminder that I’d never be able to do something as cool as this.

Fatality Versus Heroic Brutality

In case you were dying to know, here’s a video clip of every single fatality and heroic brutality finishing move in the new Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe game. While some of them are downright cool (I love the nostalgia of the arcade drop and Scorpion’s fire breathing), it’s sad that they couldn’t do more with what they had and just went with the all out gore. Either way, some of these are entertaining to watch. What’s your favorite?

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix…whew…Next Week!

Finish Him, MK vs DC Universe Style

A new video is out that showcases some of the finishing moves found in the soon-to-be-unleashed Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe game, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. While the middle schooler in me wishes that these were proper Mortal Kombat fatalities from the days of yore, it’s still incredible to see Superman whack-a-mole a dude down into the earth.

What were some of your favorite Mortal Kombat fatalities? I was a big fan of Liu Kang’s dragon bite in MK 2, personally.

MK vs DC: The Story

Call me a fool, but I actually want to play Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe when it drops on November 10th. When I first heard the idea, I thought it was maybe one of the stupidest things ever conceived by man (save for the genius behind FFVIII’s draw magic system), but once the gameplay videos started rolling in, it looked shockingly fun.

However, I still wasn’t sold on the fanboy canon, and how these things could possibly mash. Well, a new video is out that does just that. And surprisingly, it kind of works. Anyone else going to play this one?
