Little Known Nintendo 64 Facts

It’s so fascinating to hear bits of our gaming history these days, especially with systems that I was old enough to read about and care about in the days leading up to their release. Here’s a video about the development of the Nintendo 64, including a list of really cool tidbits such as why Nintendo claimed to stick to cartridges, the system’s original name, how Goldeneye was developed and more.

I’ve got some fond memories of this fine machine. Crazy to think that it came out almost 20 years ago. What are some of your favorite N64 memories?

  1. My favorite N64 memory has to be Zelda: Majora’s Mask. I was 7 or 8 at the time (young’un, I know) and I loved Ocarina of Time, but I never even know Majora’s Mask was a thing until a friend showed it to me. I was blown away. Holy shit, it looks like Ocarina of Time but it’s so advanced! Holy shit that moon! OH MY GOD YOU’RE A DEKU SCRUB!

I got it that Christmas and it has done more for me than its predecessor ever will.

  2. My sister got an N64 for Christmas when it was released with Mario Kart which spawned a love for the series ever since. We spent way too many hours also playing Super Mario 64, Star Fox, Goldeneye and of course the juggernaut that is Ocarina of Time!

  3. The Nintendo 64 was my first console as a kid. I got it for Christmas when I was 5 or 6, so just a wee lad at the time but it came with Mario Kart 64, my favorite Rare adventure Banjo-Kazooie, and Namco Museum. I remember the first time I experienced Goldeneye, and the overly complex trick system of 1080 Snowboarding, and the first experience with Super Smash Bros. which spawned a love for one of my favorite fighting games. Ahh man I had such memories of that console. I remember playing Pokemon Stadium and it came with a cartridge system for the controller so you could upload your Pokemon into the game and battle with your personal team!

  4. Playersbro OMG I completely forgot about Pokemon Stadium and how many hours I sunk into that and seeing my home grown team in 3D!!!!

  5. @Xhojn, That was so mindblowing to me as a kid! The fact that you could just take your characters from your Gameboy game and bring them to life on Pokemon Stadium and see them in 3D like that. I used to spend hours playing the minigames too.

  6. @Playersbro hell yeah! And what about facing off against Mew Two? That was one of the most difficult battle of my life, god knows how people managed it if they hadn’t been raising a team on the Gameboy. Watching the Twitch players and this as well has been bringing back a lot of Pokemon memories. I have had to stop since the second gen as that stuff was like crack for me!
