EA Opens Star Wars-Focused DICE LA Studio

DICE LA

Last week’s revelation that EA had acquired the exclusive rights from Disney to develop new Star Wars games was only the first drop in what is likely to be a slow trickle as new information slowly comes to light. Today, our Bothan spies have returned with more news regarding EA’s intentions towards the fabled franchise.

As reported last week, Bioware, DICE and Visceral are the 3 EA studios being granted first crack at the galaxy far, far away. Of those 3 though, it appears DICE is the flyboy who gets to go into the garbage chute first. EA just opened DICE LA (no, my caps lock is not stuck) in, you guessed it, Los Angeles. The studio will be “a key cog” in its Star Wars plans and is located very close to Activision, with a clear purpose:

“There is an extreme talent pool over that we want a part of. It’s no secret that our main competitor is there,”

Apparently, EA is looking to recruit some of the talented devs at Infinity Ward and Treyarch. More to the point, opening up a DICE studio for Star Wars only fuels the already-rampant rumors regarding Star Wars: Battlefront 3. Because, you know, Battlefield. It also makes sense to call it Battlefront 3 simply because that is a name already known to gamers.

So what do you make of this news? Does the fact that DICE appears to be getting the first chance at Star Wars give you a new hope? EA opening an entire studio for this purpose does seem hint that they are taking this rather seriously, so hopefully this means more games like Knights of the Old Republic and less The Force Unleashed. What say you?

  1. As a Star Wars fan that never got to experience the original trilogy in theaters, right now is probably the most excited I’ve ever been for the entire franchise. This past year has been filled with tons of great promise, now if it can all just come out already I would be happy. Also those were some good references there Anthony.
