Closer to Next Gen: Next Xbox and PS4 Rumors Surface

next xbox no used games always online

It’s “Stop the Presses” Thursday, coming at ya!

Hot on the heels of Sony’s announcement of a press conference on the 20 of February said to be a PlayStation 4 reveal, more rumored specifications about the Xbox 360 successor leaked out thanks to Edge.

The next Xbox will be always online, won’t play second hand games, will have games that ship on 50GB Blu-Ray discs and will utilize an upgraded Kinect. The always-online, no second-hand rumors have been floating around for a while, and it looks like games will be packaged with an activation code that renders the disc useless beyond the purchaser.

As for hardware, the system specs of the next Xbox look like this: AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. The system architecture of the next generation consoles, PS4 included, are apparently really close to the inner workings of a PC.

In contrast, the rumored specifications of Sony’s PS4 are a bit more beefy on paper, with developers apparently saying that the PS4 is easier to work on, as well as featuring an operating system that’s less stringent than Microsoft’s next console.

This “no used games” thing keeps popping up, so what do you guys think? Does the next Xbox actually have all this stuff? Will Sony reveal the PlayStation 4 on the 20? Go!

  1. I don’t know what to think any more, it’s impossible to distinguish between rumour and fact these days. I’m just going to wait for official announcements and such.

The only thing i have to wonder though: What the bloody hell are these things going to cost? If even half these rumours are true you are going to need some serious cash to buy these things.

  2. Though they may be rumors, I’m not sure a lot of folks would take to kindly to the level of access the new Xbox would need with it requiring an internet connection to even run, and this whole notion that they are going to put activation codes on games, that once activated, renders the game null and void kills any idea of being able to share the experience of the game with a friend. If they get that DRM happy, I don’t think many people will buy the next Microsoft console. As @James Freeman said, I’m just going to wait and see what official aannouncements of features and specs these next-gen consoles have

  3. I’ve been a PC gamer for years, but consoles will still have a place in my heart. Like James Freeman said, it’s hard to distinguish truth and rumors..so it’s just easier to play the waiting game. If the Xbox does decide to go with the “no-used games” approach, and Sony doesn’t do that for their PS4 then consider me a brand new Playstation owner. I don’t appreciate it when companies would rather fuck over the customers just for the sake of “limiting piracy.”

  4. I’ve never been a big consumer of used games, as I feel it’s nothing more than a swindling tactic by stores, but I do understand how cutting out the second hand sale can affect people. What disturbs me the most with this and with the always-online piece (which is bullshit, btw) is that a decade or so into the future, every single one of these games will be worthless. I can buy somebody’s copy of EarthBound or Saints Row, and I can play it at any time in the future and it will still work. Once a next-gen game is used, it’s gone. Sony and Microsoft are essentially dooming these games.

If you thought it was hard to sell used PC games, wait till you try to sell used console games a few years from now.

  5. I am not going to bother to upgrade to the next-gen consoles if they do enforce this activation codes bs because What if i buy a replacement ps4 in the future will that game still work on the new one because it had already been activated on the old one that died, I buy games because I like to have the physical disc in case the hdd crashes or whatever I can swap it out and reinstall the game, you need the game in the drive anyway to play so I dont see the point of this for the evryday consumer, its only the hackers who have Jail broken their ps3 that will have an image of the game anyway that wont require the disc to play so stop raping the gamer and forget about the codes idea it is stupid, I hate the games that come with codes for Downloadable content, as far as I am concerned if a game is released as a special edition with these extras they should be physically on the disc.
