The GamerSushi Show, Ep 49: The Illusive Beard

tgs episode 49

I forget when something qualifies as “over the hill”, but I think at this point the podcast is probably there. As benefits our advanced age, this week’s show is full of ramblings; without Nick on the cast to rein us in with a game we tend to go off on any tangent we feel like. Like episode 48, the result is a shorter podcast but I think that we have some pretty good discussions.

What do we discuss, you ask? We talk about a large variety of things all the way from EA removing official Battlefield 3 servers to Diablo III’s launch day woes and even how BioWare is floundering with the relationship they have with their fans. There’s also a couple of Day Z stories, some ranting about how we’re all too old to enjoy longer games, and whether or not games can (or should) qualify as art.

So! You know the drill, friends. Listen. Rate. Be fruitful and multiply. See you next time on our big five-oh shindig!

  1. Two Podcasts in one week? You spoil us. This definitely just made my week of High School finals less painful.

  2. L4D 2 wouldn’t have got so much flak if they waited 12 years to release it 😉

A few of my friends also said that Diablo III is too much like Diablo II, which isn’t neccessarily a bad thing, but again, doing something right the first time (back to Assassin’s Creed) doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing the next time.

I loved Mirror’s Edge, and if they make it better for a sequel, that’s awesome. I loved Assassin’s Creed and actually didn’t like AC 2 as much. But, I played them both on PC; most of the complaints I’ve heard for both games have to do with the controls on a controller, which really is a shame.

I understand why a console player would want Minecraft on a console, but I can’t wrap my head around someone who already has it on PC would want it on console. The world is limited, it does NOT continuously build like the PC version (you literally hit an invisible wall), which is the best reason to have it: You can explore /forever/. on and on and on…

I think David Lee Roth said that Eddy, could be wrong.

On Day Z: The problem I’ve heard about in the videos I’ve watched is that even if you kill others in self defence, you still end up with the bandit skin. Hopefully that’s fixed soon. A couple kills makes you bandit.

(p.s. if you steal in fallout, you should get bad karma, that’s what KARMA is, it’s not “people saw you steal so you’re bad.” If you want to be evil, you should be and feel evil. The Karma system worked pretty well.)

“Games” are all kinds of things. Audiosurf, Indigo Prophecy, Half-Life, Diablo, Super Mario World, Minecraft, Mafia, Counter-Strike, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, etc are all deemed “video games”. They are all played on a system that delivers an experience, but they’re all totally different. People like basketball, hockey and baseball for the drama within the sport far more than the intrinsic feeling of “i used to play that when I was a kid”. There is something about being a part of the dramatic experience that far outweighs the actual game itself. That’s what the “art” inside of the game is. I also don’t care if video games are ultimately considered art or not, because it’s such a meaningless title. One man’s trash…..

    Great cast guys!

But don’t people treat you differently based on your Karma? That was my problem. How did people know I was a thieving dick?

  4. Diablo 3’s launch day was awful. Honestly, Blizzard should have known, it was just bad. I get why some say “stfu fans” but given everything thats with the game (DRM especially) they screwed up major.

That is an EPIC Day Z story! Man this is awesome. I will be getting the game at some point, right now Im focusing on a move. Finally got a house!

Yes, they do, but if you’re Role-Playing a bad ass dude (or dudette), you want everyone to think you’re bad ass. There were certain companions in FO3 who would only side with you if you had Bad karma, and vice versa. If you were really playing a bad guy, you wouldn’t care why someone knew you were bad; you would simply blow their head off and steal their shit. Yes, it’s a lot harder to play thta way, but a Company would have a hard time coding it so everyone likes the bad guy (it would make it hard to sell to all of us honest hard working do-gooders), but the “asshole” class still needs to be available.

(haha as I finished writing this, The Ink Spots song Maybe just shuffled on. Holy shit shivers…)

  6. Great cast guys, although how do you not mention Mass Effect in the art discussion? That series made me feel a roller coaster of emotions while having intriguing gameplay. Forget about that Half Life nonsense.

  7. I’ve just had chance to catch up with the podcasts again, I got to say you guys always do a really good job covering topics and it’s great to listen to.

I particularly like the DayZ stuff you’ve been doing recently, now that I’m out of crunch I think I’m going to reinstall Arma 2 and give it a download based on your coverage.

I had no idea you were such a fan 😉

  9. (I don’t think this sent as my internet cut out as I was submitting) I’m one of those Dragon Age fans who knows all of the codex! 🙂
    I know DA’s history better than I know my own country’s. ¬_¬
