GamesRadar Lists Characters that Stole Our Hearts

games characters we fell in love with garrus vakarian

Gaming is filled with a variety of characters, some which have graduated to something a little bit more than just pixels on a screen. These collections of 1s and 0s, be they human, alien, or something in between, have gained such notoriety that they’ve become icons of our hobby.

GamesRadar took a humorous look at the top seven video games characters that have stolen our hearts, and I have to say it’s a pretty good list. I might be extremely biased towards the number one choice, but most of the picks on this list are right on the money. Sure, it’s lighthearted and a bit goofy, but we’ve had some really good characters come out of gaming in the last few years. Whether it’s the writing, the voice acting, or the situations we’re put in with these characters, something about them has made them just click with us.

What do you guys think about the list? Who would you move up or down or replace outright? What characters got ashamedly passed over?

  1. The sims? Thats just straight up wrong. But they hit the nail on the head with Garrus. Hes my boy! Also, Anyone remember when games radar was cheat planet?

  2. Interesting article, those were some good picks. I absolutely couldn’t agree with the number one anymore. Garrus is my main man in Mass Effect, and I think even Miranda was jealous of our bromance.

  3. I agree that John Marston was an excellent character. Throughout the whole story of RDR, I always sympathized with Marston and appreciated his presence in cutscenes. Plus he was a snarky, snarky man.

Even though I was a young kid when I first played Ocarina of Time, I readily admit I had a crush on Malon. Ignoring Zelda, it was interesting to see Link progress from a childhood friendship with Saria to a more mature romance. Okay, fine, it was all potential and just hinted at, but c’mon. I’m extrapolating (coughfanficcough). Point is, Link’s relationship with Zelda is really just convenient with the plot. If Link settled down with Malon, it’d be of his own volition.

And of course, GARRUS. YES. My friend is self-proclaimed Garrussexual. It’s insane how sexy Garrus is. Most of his charm is from his sarcasm, dead-sexy voice, and his loyalty to Shepard. He’s the hawt wingman. Heck, he even takes a missile to the face just so Shepard gets some of the action!
From a more serious character-development stand point, I think Garrus is so popular because he’s easy to understand and sympathize with. He’s a good guy stuck in a grey world, and really, the player is the same. The player wants to be the good guy saving the world. In Mass Effect 2, Garrus shows us how hard it can be to stay in the moral white because when he’s on Omega, he’s technically upholding the law, but he’s still killing people and you can tell that he’s pissed and he’s locked up some serious emotions behind his stone-cold face.
Garrus’s romance is also really powerful because it’s intimate, not sexual, and that Garrus “just wants something in his life to go right.”

Still, there wasn’t nearly enough dialogue and scenes with Garrus. I feel like Bioware missed a huge opportunity to explore Garrus’s backstory and his stories on Omega. Plus, Garrus remains loyal to Shepard pretty much without question even after 2 years, and evne Liara went to do her own thing. I’m glad Bioware devoted a lot of time to Tali and the large cast, but if there was more Garrus, it would’ve added that much more depth to the relationship between Shepard and Garrus from ME1 to 2. FRIGGIN CALIBRATIONS.

  4. Sounds like a good list to me. I’d like to add a few more.
Tali and Kasumi from Mass Effect
    Visas Marr from Kotor 2
    Melia from Xenoblade
Clover from 9 Persons 9 Hours 9 Doors (which I just finished for the first time. Holy Mind screws Batman)

  5. I can’t really argue with that list. Garrus <3 (No homo)
Also Alyx and Elena would be my choices too, but compared to Garrus? No competition: Garrus wins.
But I had to point something out: "There's no way Nintendo would ever include an overtly romantic sub-plot of any kind in one of its games".
Apparently they WERE going to have this in Ocarina of Time (I believe Malon, Zelda and Nabooru were supposed to be choices amongst others… Ruto mebbe?) but due to time, budget and technical limitations it never happened.
I'm kind of glad they dropped it, because I've always found Nabooru creepy in her flirtatious manner towards young Link:

  6. The Garrus segment was absolutely hilarious. He’s like the space alien Chuck Norris apparently. There’s definitely more characters they could add to the list, many of which I can’t quickly bring to mind. The neighbor in Sims felt like a bit of an odd choice for my taste but not like I have much say in the matter.

    1. Am I the only person in the world that thinks that just doesn’t get all the Garrus love? I mean, he’s cool and all, but I’d take Mordin over him any day.
