Today’s WTF: Black Ops Voted to Have Best Ending Ever

guinness world records black ops

I’m going to try and type this post without going into full-on editorial rage mode, but it’s going to be difficult. Guinness World Records recently held a vote to determine which video game had the best ending of all time. A number of “gamers” (13,519 to be exact) cast their ballots and came up with the Top 50 Video Game Endings of all time.

There are some pretty decent choices on the list like Shadow of the Colossus, Portal and Red Dead Redemption but the game that tops the list is last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. That game had a decent ending, but I wouldn’t put it at the top of any list, much less a list of the supposed best endings in the history of gaming. This isn’t the only puzzler either as Sonic Adventure 2, The Force Unleashed II and Super Mario Bros all make an appearance. I could rant forever about why the Force Unleashed doesn’t even deserve anything but a quick trip to the incinerator, and Super Mario Bros doesn’t even have an ending.

The whole list is after the jump.

I didn’t correct any of the many grammar and spelling errors in this list either, it’s all copy/pasted straight from Guinness’ site. What do you guys think of this list? Total fail or somewhat decent? What’s your list of the best endings in gaming?

  1. This is why I don’t listen to mainstream media for video game stuff. I loved Black Ops’ story, but no; it was not the best of all time.

  2. Damnit I forgot to put my list. I seldom find a game I really fall in love with and walk away satisfied with the ending. So I have a pretty short list.

    1. Wind Waker
    2. Metal Gear Solid 3
    3. The Maw

    And that’s it.

  3. Deus Ex anyone? Why is AssCreed Brotherhood on here (among others) all its ending did was raise more questions. Why exactly are polls used to determine what is best anyway, by that rationale Avatar and Call of Duty are the best movie and game series evar (Note: they are both good, but definitely not the best).

  4. Made to get people riled up and talking about it maybe? I almost expected to see Halo 2 on there.

Some like Mass Effect 2 have different ending depending on who played it too, If the list isn’t to troll whoever wrote it needs educating (and a spell/grammer check)

  5. I’m mystified by the inclusion of Super Mario Bros and Pokemon Black/White and 11 and 12. As great as they are, could you really say they have great stories and then go so far as to single them out as having some of greatest endings of all time?

  6. This list is just awful, just complete crap. I also just noticed that 4 Call of Duty games made it onto the list, shame on you internet. And the spelling/grammar errors are just painful, I did laugh pretty hard at Half-Life 2: Episode Tow though.

    1. Mass Effect is first because before that i had never seen a game ending like that before i played it and it still sticks with me today.
    2. Second though is Limbo, the minute the game ended and i realized what had happened i was just amazed.

The picture and its text say it all.

I really cant believe that. Seriously.

  8.
Is it just me, or are there barely enough truly good game endings on that list to make a top five?
THIS.

That being said, Metal Gear Solid 3, Portal and Red Dead Redemption are some of the greatest game endings ever.

  9. Thinking on this some more, I’m reminded of a very early podcast where Eddy (I think, could have been Jeff) brought up the topic of falling action. Going over the list, and picking out the games that I think really belong there, I’m noticing a correlation – games that I think have better endings tend to have falling action, a wrapping up sequence that brings the story together.

Half Life 2: Episode 2 had the huge running battle against the army of Hunters and Striders, but if it had ended as soon as the fight was done, there would have been nothing special about it. But it was after that, the epilogue if you will, with the rocket launch, preparing to leave to rescue Judith and… THAT event that cemented the ending as great.

I haven’t played it, but Red Dead Redemption was brought up as the prime example on the podcast as having falling action. Again, the story being wrapped up after the main action sequence has finished made the ending better.

MGS 3 had the award ceremony and Snake visiting the grave site to wrap things up. In my opinion that’s what makes a good ending. Not just blowing up something big at the end. There needs to be a reason, something further to explain why things happened, what the consequences were.

  10. Well, Guinness obviously didn’t ask the right people. I know I didn’t get my invitation for this vote. In any case, and I don’t think I’ll get any support from the folks here, I still think Prince of Persia (the “new” one, with Elika) deserves to be close to the top, if not at the top. Such a “Holy shit” moment and filled with emotion that video games never really touch.

Also, Braid. How the hell is Braid not on this list?

At least BioShock is…and Shadow of the Colossus. But no Ico!

Arbitrary lists have no right making anyone angry…I can’t help that this one does make me angry.

  11. Half way reading through the list I was expecting a Madden game to show up. This honestly looks like a handful of 8th grades all time best list.
