VGAs 2011: All the Winners!

Miyamoto

Ah, the VGAs. The time of year when game enthusiasts far and wide go through the tumultuous turns and dives of the hype train. Bandied about by double speak and cryptic front man Geoff Keighley, we willingly jump into that nexus of marketing, full of fake celebrities, very few awards and some lame jokes – and all for what? For glimpses of what we can expect out of the next year from our favorite past time.

For all of the complaints that people throw against the VGAs, I do have to say that I enjoy the outcome – actually having something to look forward to for the following year. Last year, we got excited about Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3 and then some. I’m not saying they’re perfect. But they do what they’re designed to do – hype games.

Anyway, soapbox aside, one of the other purposes of the VGAs is to do just that – hand out video game awards. This year, a number of great games and studios took home the awards. They even honored Miyamoto as the first inductee into the Video Game Hall of Fame. I thought I’d paste all the goings-down here so you could voice your quibbles and rants. Full list of winners after the jump!

That’s quite the list, huh? It seems to me that some of the categories had a bit better representation this year than last, although the way these things get divided up still baffles me. I have to say, I’m pleased with Skyrim winning overall Game of the Year, although I think it would have been nice to honor Mark Hamill for his fine work as the Joker as well.

  1. I’m happy that Bastion did well, It deserves it! I’m surprised that they chose Portal 2 as best PC game, but it’s a great game anyway. I agree with trailer of the year, I thought that it was a really cool trailer. And Skyrim really earned the game of the year award, it’s just brilliant.

  2. I’m surprised Uncharted 3 got best graphics. I found that Rage, Crysis 2, and Skyrim had graphics that were infinitely better than Uncharted 3.

  3. Blech! Can I do this? I don’t care…I’m gonna:

Game of the Year – Dark Souls
Character of the Year – Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher 2
Best Xbox 360 Game – Mine was RRoD’d…so not sure
Best PS3 Game – Little Big Planet 2
Best Wii Game – Xenoblade Chronicles
Best PC Game – The Witcher 2
    Best Shooter – Portal 2
Best Action Adventure Game – Dark Souls
    Best RPG – Skyrim
    Best Multiplayer – Portal 2
Best Fighting Game – Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
Best Song in a Game – “Sons of Skyrim”
    Best Original Score – Bastion
Best Graphics – The Witcher 2
Best Performance by a Human Male – Stephen Merchant as Wheatley, Portal 2
Best Performance by a Human Female – Ellen McLain as GLaDOS, Portal 2 (Was tough to not put Triss Merigold here)
    Best Downloadable Game – Bastion
Most Anticipated Game – Mass Effect 3

    Sorry…wanted to soapbox a bit…plus I thought that was a horrible list.

  4. I don’t really care about these awards (although the actual show was pretty good compared to years previous, and Zachary Levi did a great job) but a few winners appalled me. Portal 2 for best MP? CoD for best 360 game? And I’m sorry I love GlaD0s but it does not take a lot of talent to do a robot voice. But all of this was made better by the kick ass gameplay trailer of ME3.

  5. All told, surprisingly not a terrible list, CoD excepted. And Minecraft being an all-too-obvious choice for the indie category. Best female performance might be a tad questionable, but I have to differ with Drell – there was definitely some subtle talent brought to bear in the voicing of GlaD0s. Interesting that 360 was the odd man out in not having an exclusive title win best game.
