Make Your Predictions for the 2011 Video Game Awards

vga 2011 predicitons

SPIKE TV’s annual half-celebration half-“see I told you this is what them video games is like” Video Game Awards show airs tomorrow and in-between all of the trailers for upcoming games there’s a chance for developers and individual games to walk away with trophies.

2011 has been an exceptional year for games and the VGAs are chock full of titles that I’d be hard pressed to choose over one another. Some are obvious winners for me (like picking Battlefield 3 as the best multiplayer game over Modern Warfare 3 and Gears of War 3), but a few I had a hard time deciding on. Do I really like Skyrim better than Batman? That may seem like an obvious choice at first, but then I start thinking about it and maybe I break out into sweat. Who’s to say?

I’m also a little disappointed by the lack of a GotY nomination for Deus Ex: Human Revolution but I’m just one man. Take a look at the nominees for the various categories of the 2011 Video Game Awards and tell us what you think. What’s your pick for Game of the Year? Any write-in votes?

  1. Its kinda funny, there are games here that could have swept in previous years. Some of the categories were harder to choose then I thought, Best Voice Acting? Sure Nolan North is great but Steven Merchant was good too.

I wonder if people will take a break from Skyrim long enough to vote for it.

  2. I haven’t had a chance to check out the nominees yet, but I’m fully expecting (along with many others I’m sure) the Skyrim is going to clean house. The only shame I can think of is that my personal GOTY isn’t going to get any recognition simply because it hasn’t been released in the USA yet. Xenoblade chronicles was a phenomenal game, but just because Nintendo of America is more shortsighted the Europeans, there will be many people that will continue not knowing that it even exists. And that makes me sad 🙁

  3. @supernovaforce – It’ll have a chance next year(maybe even a better chance) since it’s being released in April stateside.

As for Spike, Dark Souls and Witcher 2 got Best RPG nods, and the latter also a best PC game nod, but that’s it? If I had to pick GOTY, it’d easily be one of those two. Mind you, I haven’t played Arkham City or Skyward Sword, but I don’t think that’d change my mind. As for what’s there, Portal 2 would sweep for me, voice-acting categories included. Skyrim was fine, but in categories of innovation and heart, it can’t hold a candle to Dark Souls, Witcher 2, Portal 2, or Bastion (which was at least well represented).

And speaking of Skyrim, if you want an interesting read, check out Eurogamer’s article on Dark Souls vs. Skyrim. It’s NOT saying Dark Souls is better, just pointing out the differences in story-telling. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-12-07-telling-tales-skyrim-and-dark-souls-article

  4. It was all good until I saw the Best Graphics category.
    And there was no BF3.

    Are you freaking kidding me?

As much as I love Minecraft, it doesn’t deserve Best Game for PC. I mean, seriously, it’s all fun and that, but it’s full of bugs, crashes and useless stuff. I’m kinda glad that Notch stepped down as lead developer and put Jens there. Guy was lazy as heck meanwhile Jens was behind the code from 1.9 pre-realeases to 1.0.

Also for song, Sons of Skyrim. ‘Nuff said.

  5. It’s been a while since I last dropped a comment, my computer was more-or-less in a coma. But I’m back and proud to leave my 2 cents with my favorite game reivew website.

Best DLC: Mass Effect 2 (The Arrival) 19%, Fallout New Vegas (Old World Blues) 40%, Portal 2 (Peer Review) 40%, Mortal Kombat (Freddy Krueger) 1%
Bad, Mortal Kombat, Bad… (shakes a rolled up newspaper).

Best Shooter: Gears of War 3
Now Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 were both incredible shooters. However, I fear that their similarities will be why they’ll both lose out to Gears of War 3. They both fall into the ‘realistic’ category of FPS games that they’ll be splitting their potential votes between eachother. Gears and Rage fall into sci-fi/fantasy FPS games but Gears stands a head above Rage with a better story line and nice touches of humor. Look up Cole Train’s ‘Explosive’ Touchdown on YouTube as further evidence.

Game of the Year: Batman: Arkham City
A game so incredible that it got the schizophrenic, Attention-Deficit-Disordered reviewers at GameInformer to give it a perfect 10/10. I thought the 10 outta 10 was like some mythical unicorn since those apes can’t seem to stay focused on a game for more than a month. Just remember their ‘Top-Thirty Characters of the Decade.’
