Halo: Anniversary Integrates Kinect and Achievements

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (Super Gaiden Subsistence) is coming out on November 15, updating the classic Xbox shooter with a shiny coat of new graphics and other bells and whistles. It may surprise you to learn that 343 Industries isn’t just content with bringing Combat Evolved into the modern era; they also found the time to put a few Kinect commands into the game.

It’s not as bad as you’re probably thinking, and the Kinect stuff actually seems pretty harmless. There’s three commands that have been introduced and they are:

  • Voice Commands: Lets you switch weapons, throw grenades and toggle the graphics overlay without lifting a finger.
  • Analyze Mode: Similar to the Metroid Prime series, you can point your reticle at various objects in the environment and the game will scan the thing in question and add it to your…
  • Library: This Library is not the one in the game, fortunately, it’s actually an index for all the things you scanned in Analyze Mode and you can leaf through it with gestures. They had to call it the Library, though?

So there’s the list folks and it’s not all that bad. The voice commands are incredibly redundant in my opinion, given that you’ve already got a controller in your hand (and they probably won’t be used in multi) but the Analyze Mode sounds pretty cool. I hope you can still do that one without a Kinect, I mean there’s a few extra buttons on the controller that Halo doesn’t use.

In addition to the reveal of the Kinect features, 343 also dropped the achievements for Halo Anniversary and the list actually looks pretty fun. I’m a big fan of the co-op achievements which use the “bro” puns like “Standard Operating Brocedure” and “Brovershield”. All of the achievements appear to be doable, so don’t be surprised if I end up nabbing all the cheevos on this list.

So, any thoughts on the Kinect commands or the achievements? Still excited for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Super Gaiden Subsistence?

  1. It’s all fun and games until someone sneaks up on you playing and yells “GREANDERELOADGRAPHICSSWITCHWEAPONS” when you are trying to get the stealth achievement.

  2. The Kinect thing isn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but I don’t want to have to mute my TV when I’m playing multiplayer with a dozen kids screaming “SWITCH WEAPONS PLASMA GRENADE GRAPHICS GRAPHICS FRAG GRENADE SWITCH WEAPONS!”

  3. Voice commands….dont care for. Never really hit achievements heavily either so this news is stale to me. I think its also because of one other thing, which plays out on question two. Im not excited about it at all anymore. Why? I realized something. This isnt really the kind of remake I wanted. I wanted pure Halo CE with updated graphics. Thats it. So the story will mostly fit into that. But whats changed is really important. Multiplayer and the weapons. I want Halo CE weapons, NOT reach weapons (so I loose out there). The multiplayer is also Reach, with some re-made maps. Im not happy with that. I wanted to play CE with my friends, not Reach. Now I guess Im too picky if all I want is a graphics update, but honestly that ruins the fun for me in a lot of ways. CE was great, Reach was too, but I dont want to play Reach. So I really feel like Im no where near as excited as I was in the beginning. They revealed so much I was able to see its basically (in the multiplayer department ( which for me was the most important since Ill spend more time on that)) Reach with soem CE maps. Lame.

  4. While the achievements are good for re-playability they also highlight some of the things the community liked to have a go at originally which is nice. However…kinect? great. I understand Microsoft want it in their flagship titles and i may even get on board analyse/library thing (as long as it is accessible for none kinect users as well, Has anyone found that out yet? ) but voice commands actually affect gameplay and probably not in a good way.

Still a day one for me regardless but if they push kinect too hard then it could spell disaster for Halo 4.

I don’t understand, 343’s ruining the series because they have achievement names you don’t find funny?
