Just because I’m a huge nerd, I’ve been wanting to try Dungeons and Dragons for a while, especially after attending a demo during PAX Prime last year. I do tend to restrict my gaming to electronic devices, but I have dabbled with Warhammer 40,000 in the past and a few collectible card games here and there.
Even though I’ve given up getting together a group of friends locally to play D&D, I’ve joined a game with one of my friends and a few of his guild mates from World of Warcraft. Using a program called Vassal, we’re able to replicate the D&D experience to a tee and it’s been a lot of fun. We haven’t really gotten that far in our adventure (and I almost got killed by wererats) but I’m looking forward to making the game part of my weekly routine.
It’s nice to mix things up once and while and playing D&D is a far cry from my typical gaming sessions, even if I am using a program on the PC. As a nice side benefit, I’m finally getting to experience the game that influenced generations of game designers, so I feel like I’ll come to appreciate video gaming a little bit more because of that. What about you guys? Do any of you play table top games, and if you do, which ones do you play? Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer, or something different?
I’ve played Warhammer 40,000 (40k) for about 8 years now. It’s a fun game, and the level of customization makes everything else pale in comparison.
… not to mention I compare every single FPS hero against a Space Marine (and they *all* fall far short :P)
I’ve wanted to get a group of people to play D&D or the Warhammer tabletop games for a while. In the case of the Warhammer tabletop games, they require a huge investment of time and money (much like video games I suppose). It can also be difficult to get people who can make a commitment to put time aside to play D&D. I plan to play them some day soon though.
Warhammer 40,000 up until about five years ago. Then, I had to pay for college. Hoping to jump back in after I get my accounting degree, but I’m worried I won’t be able to recapture that magic.
D20 games, I never left. Much less overhead needed to play.
Only if you count breaking out the scrabble or cribbage board every so often.
Do card games count?
My cousin, friend and I play the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG sometimes. It’s still a blast even though I haven’t got a booster pack in years and don’t have all this new Synchro-Summon shit that was introduced in 5D’s (cardgames on motorcycles!). Now that Zexal is beginning I can only imagine what crazy new mechanic will be introduced.
Ever since I started reading the Penny Arcade comics I’ve wanted to do some D&D. There’s a club at the uni I want to go to that does tabletop gaming so I’ll be able to try D&D or even WH40k (and duel Yu-Gi-Oh style).
BTW: I love how you guys are incorporating nerdy things other than computer games on the site. Though I didn’t take part in the Star Wars convo it was nice to see it up. None of my friends appreciate Sci-Fi or fantasy (beyond Terminator or TLotR films) at all which is bewildering because SURELY you like either one or both? Anyway, thanks for making this haven more havenly.
Mitch. I play D&D (3.5, 4.0 can suck it) for the past 4 years or so. We actually have a GREAT DM who will be back in Houston this year. I will try and get in touch with him and see if he would maybe want to try something or if he is ever going to start any up in town to let you know. He is phenomenal and knows his stuff.
I love tabletop D&D. Its amazing, videogames CANT do it justice. Honestly if you never have played, but you are interested, try it. Its great fun. When you have a good DM its fantastic. If your DM is kind of shoddy then things may be a little less fun but its still unlike any videogame you can play. The fact you are there with real people makes it all the more amazing. Great stuff
Waaaaay back at the dawn of time, before the advent of video games (even the Atari 2600). My friends and I started playing this new game called Dungeons and Dragons (I guess it would be considered version 1.0). Since then I have continued playing when I can get a group together, no other gaming experience can compare to sitting down with a group of friends and doing some dungeon running. Those were and are some good times.
I tried to, but my friends banned me b/c I kept rolling dice to do anything.
“Gonna get something to eat…(rolls dice) damn it. Next time.”
