The Top Game Design Programs in the Country

MiyamotoI’d like to think our Sound Off the other day was a rousing success. It let a few of you talk about some stuff that you’ve been thinking about, and also brought to light a few issues that you guys were interested in. Score one for Eddy, yes? And you guys, I guess. But me most of all.

Anyway, one of the things that you guys brought up was the topic of getting into the video game industry. While I’m not whiz when it comes to the gaming industry myself (every attempt of mine has gone down in burning flames), it seems that GamePro has posted a recent article to help you do just that. They basically do a run down of the best grad and undergrad game design programs in the country, by school. It’s certainly an interesting list, and one that I thought would be beneficial for you guys.

So what do you guys think? Would you be interested in going to any of those places? I have to say that I’m not too surprised that USC ranks at the top for both grad and undergrad, knowing the way they excel at other media as well. What kinds of positions are you guys interested in specifically when it comes to games? Go!

  1. On the topic of the games industry, my uncle’s trying to transfer to Rocksteady. If he gets in I’m officially electing him “World’s Coolest Uncle.” My other uncles shall be jealous.
I had a dream for years to join a games company, but Ireland doesn’t have one and I’d rather stay close to home (my uncle moved to England after FunCom in Dublin shut down and he’s not over that often). I read about Bioware Galway once and nearly had my head asplode, but it’s just a customer support office. Maybe I could just go indie? Who knows.

  2. Skuba, definitely start doing some indie stuff. Remember what Newell said in that classroom interview. Most of the guys that started were just programmers that had no idea about building games, and even now, they hire people who make community mods and do cool things, not necessarily people who have “3+ years experience in X” like they say when Steam is looking to hire. Do cool things and get good at them! Sure going to school helps you get with the right people to help you along, but if you’re passionate about something, you can really make some good headway.

  3. @ Julez, maybe I could make the next Minecraft! Lol.
That would actually be awesome. I have plenty of crazy ideas buzzing around, but I don’t yet know the first thing about programming. Give me a couple of years and we’ll see if I have anything.

  4. YOU LISTENED TO ME! FOREVER ALONE, NO MORE!

Ahem. Thanks for finding this! This will really help decide which colleges to look at when I start hunting.

I’m in a similar boat, Skuba, as far as having a lot of ideas but zero programming ability. My problem with the Gabe Newell said is that I don’t know how to make any indie stuff, and in order to have anything to show to a developer company in order to get hired, I would need to have constructed the project. I mean…ugh, I’m just not good at programming; I’m born to be a game designer, but I need to get to that point. Rage face.

  5. I am going to be a game designer and I’m actually going to look at Full Sail (a very popular and good game design school in Orlando) next month. I’ve also done a two week camp where I designed and made my own game at the SMU guildhall, so they are in my options as well.

  6. Wow SMU is on the list, never would have thought. UT Dallas I was sure I had heard of too. A&M actually is huge for Pixar, but thats not the gaming world.

I would go to UTD if I could, but Im pursuing a graduate degree in something else. I would be interested in game testing to start with in hopes of climbing the development ladder. Honestly Id love to be a part of the gaming industry in terms of voice acting. People always say Id be good at it, I just have no real clue where to start. If you had any info on that Eddy Id love to see it.

  7. I am transferring to digipen this fall semester so I was exited to see that it was number 3 on the list of undergrad schools.

Skuba and Cossack, you should totally start playing around with source SDK, its easy to get into and there are a lot of tutorials online to help you get started. I had never touched a game development kit in my life and after two weeks of non-stop modding before school started up I came up with this http://www.moddb.com/members/gadflyjim .

also I would love to start a mod group so to anyone interested feel free to contact me at Animated.Brain@gmail.com, just let me know you are from GS.

Drell Assassin, you should look into DigiPen, it would be awesome to have a fellow sushi there. Also did you say on a previous post that you are going to E3 because I might be going (official Gamersushi E3 ambassadors?).

I am would definitely consider Digipen, although I need to do more research. I would love to be in the Seattle area, it’s so nice there. And yes, if everything goes as planned I will be at E3. I say we be temporary editors haha.

  9. Drell Assassin, when you registered what did you put for industry credentials. I am not sure if they want my connection to DigiPen or other industry projects.

I work at Gamestop, so I’m supposed to be getting my pass from them. However if I were you I would definitely mention DigiPen.
