It’s Real: Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Hitting November 2011

halo combat evolved remake 2011

Get your fanboy hats on, folks, because it looks like the rumored HD remake of Halo: Combat Evolved that I posted about back in November is the real deal. Joystiq, citing an unamed source, has learned that the game that kick-started Bungie’s rise to power and revolutionized First Person Shooters on the console is getting remade in High Definition with new art assets.

We’re not just talking about a tuned up re-release, no sir. This game is using an entirely new engine (Joystiq claims that the engine behind Reach is not powering this remake, contrary to popular belief), and is being made by Saber Interactive. The game will support 1080p and 3D as well, if that’s your thing. Multiplayer is still being worked out, but the game is confirmed to have online co-op (the original shipped with split-screen two player co-op).

Furthermore, this remake is apparently one of two Halo games under the 343 Industries banner, so expect more news from the Halo front. For a release date, we’re looking at November 15, 2011, ten years after the original launch of Halo: Combat Evolved.

On an unofficial note, that makes me feel really old, because that will mean I was 14 when the original Halo came out. Are you guys excited about a Halo: Combat Evolved HD remake? Nervous? Nauseous? Go!

  1. I’m both excited and nervous. On one hand it’s a fanboy dream of mine to play this, but on the other, if it’s screwed up, it will be one of the biggest opportunities missed and people will not trust the Halo franchise out of Bungie’s hands.

  2. Maybe the PC port will be playable this time XD.

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years either Mitch. I’ll never forget being 13 and 14 playing the crap out of the original campaign with my cousin. This was probably the last game I tore through as a “console gamer”. Such good memories.

    1. I’m tentatively excited about this. All I’m saying is it better not be a Twin Snakes.

What would be awesome, though: multiplayer over Live, pistol and everything still intact.

  3. Wow, i was 7 when the first Halo came out, but it in my opinion it is still the best in the Halo series. I will even play the PC version’s multiplayer every few months just for the fun it still offers. Also, what do you guys think about 343 Industries re-releasing this game? Are they doing it to make money or are they doing it because they want to make the fans trust/like them?

I think the demand for it is very high, not to mention there are lots of Halo players these days that were too young to have played the original Halo, so they’ll be able to see what happens the second after Reach ended.

  5. I was 8

I think they are doing it for all the reasons you said plus the fact that I think everyone wants it.

Halo CE for the PC gave me all of that. To be honest, its one of the best of the halo games in terms of online multiplayer. It was amazing and if you thought the BR was competitive, the pistol makes a mockery of it. I cant wait to see it without lag.

Im excited, but it needs to be good. Nothing new. Needs to be the same game. Same thing.

  7. I don’t think I’m too keen on a CE remake. Remembering Halo when it was fresh, new and had only slightly hit the mainstream syndicate was the best time to experience and play it.

I think it’s fair to say it’s mostly because of money, although it will be introducing Halo’s main story to younger audiences. Now though, since Bungie in all their glory has stepped away from the podium it just feels like grave robbing to me.

If kids want to play it, play the original.

Otherwise let it’s awesomeness rest in peace.

  8. This will certainly be a litmus test to see if 343 can appease the fan base. Their popularity’s kinda riding on this.

  9. As long as they don’t mess with the multiplayer mechanics this game will dominate the XBL arcade rankings for months. However, if they bring over reticle bloom from Reach all is lost. KEEP HALO CE, HALO CE NOT HALO CE.REACH.O. Give us hardcore Halo fans our franchise back. It’s what we deserve after having classic Halo gameplay steamrolled because someone thought it was a good idea to take a page from another game “cough* COD cough*” and implement those STUPID loadouts. I want to once again launch the rockets across the map to myself on Hang Em High. Don’t $%)#* us on this Bungie or we’ll never forgive you.
