GamerSushi Asks: Favorite New IP of Last Decade?

WoW

The game industry is expanding, growing at a massive rate with more quality games coming out now than ever before. In the old days, we used to pine for something to play during the slow summer months. Now we would kill just for a month off to catch up on our ever-growing backlog.

With all the new properties being introduced and becoming either new favorites or new targets to bash, 1UP did me a favor and compiled, you guessed it, a list of the 50 Biggest Video Game Properties of the Last 10 Years. Most of the games you would expect are on there, such as Uncharted, World of Warcraft and Mass Effect, but there are a few surprises, like Psychonauts and Beyond Good & Evil. Deserving games, to be sure, but not what you think of when you think “big”.

What games on the list do you think shouldn’t be? What was missed? And what’s your favorite new franchise of the last decade? Inquiring minds, like mine, want to know!

  1. I really don’t think World of Goo, Castle Crashers, Beyond Good and Evil, Saints Row and Psychonauts belong on this list. Also, Angry Birds seems to new of a phenomenon to be on the list

With that said, I would have to say that Portal, Uncharted, God of War and Team Ico’s offerings are my favorites. Those series are among my favorites of all time.

I would have put Red Dead on the list. The first game was fun, but the second, while not a sequel it still shared the name, was absolutely fantastic. Redemption, by itself, is much more deserving than Saints Row 1 and 2, in my opinion.

The biggest omission, to me, by far is Ratchet and Clank. That series still is the definitive action-platformer. I didn’t even think about it until I read through the comments, but now thinking about the series not being on the list is mind-boggling. This ommission is the biggest mistake on the list.

  2. My favourites are easily mass effect and kotor.

One thing I noticed – they put in Ace Attorney, but not Professor Layton. I thought the Prof’s games were more popular… Or maybe I just missed it, I was only skimming the article.

  3. Not a bad list but I think they missed out on a big part of the ps2’s history. When I look back on my time gaming the Ratchet & Clank/Jak and Daxter/Sly Cooper time period brings back fond memories. I might be cutting it close but those are all solid franchises.

  4. Mine is definitely Mass Effect. I know I’ve expressed my love of it many of times on this site, and I’ll say it again. I love Mass Effect. No form of entertainment has captivated me this much since when I first saw Star Wars as a little kid. My other favorites are WoW, Halo, Gears, Bioshock, KOTOR, Uncharted, and I’m sure there are others I just can’t think of right now.

  5. You should talk about this list on your next podcast by the way. Good topic of conversation. Just saying.

  6. Glad to see Max Payne on there, but I’m surprised to not see Mafia compared to some of the games that made it (…Crysis?). Sure, Mafia II wasn’t great, but the first one really changed open world games and storytelling, with incredible face modelling.
