Rumor: Metal Gear Solid Trilogy Gets the HD Treatment

Metal Gear Solid 2

Following a recent (and awesome) trend of re-working classic games to be displayed in high-definition — the purest and most joy-bringing of all definitions — it seems that Solid Snake could soon grace our HDTV’s. That’s right, Kojima-ites: rumors have surfaced from the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine that an HD version of the Metal Gear Solid series is on its way to the PS3.

As this post is so tagged, this is most certainly a rumor in the truest sense. I am busy trying to contain my joy at the thought of playing MGS 1 and MGS 3 in full HD splendor, particularly the latter of the two, as it’s been years since I’ve experienced it. There’s no release window or price attached to these whispers, but hopefully this turns out to be true, and we’ll start seeing some more information shortly. And more importantly: will it have crab battles?

I feel I am owed a congratulations for getting through this entire post without a proper “squee” of delight. Who else is hoping this news is true?

  1. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!! I hope this turns out to be as much of a rumour as the Team Ico Collection was! If they put in a decent camera (on 3 at least, I can understand why 1&2 couldn’t) then it would be a magnificent package. I doubt they’ll do 1 though, that would require a HUGE overhaul. Unless they take Twin Snkes updated graphics and throw on 144p (or better still; 504p) and give the option of playing it like the original with updated graphics or Twin Snakes style. That way both Eddy and I will be happy lol.

  2. I’d LOVE to play the first two games again, and maybe with this I”ll have reason to eat snakes and give in to the 3rd one since it’s the “best one” according to you dudes. This would make me very happy.

  3. The thing I hate about HD remakes is that most of the time it’s just the same engine with upscaled resolution and some slightly higher resolution textures. It’s not as apparent in remakes of newer games, but if MGS1 was HD’d then you could still see the huge polygons of the 90’s console gen which makes the higher resolution and prettier textures not do as much as they could. I guess it is easier to just do that but come on. People just slap HD on everything now a’ days.

Well, it’s not really a remake, just up-resing, like you said.

The real joy comes with having all 3 bundled for a low price.
