GamerSushi Asks: Favorite Sports Video Game?

Michael Jordan

Gamers have a diverse mix of interests. Some are really into fantasy novels and Star Wars, others anime and manga. Even more are sports nuts, which is where we will focus our question today. In the days of old, sports games were a fun way to have a few friends over and enjoy the outdoor sports while indoors, but not all sports games are created equal. Some are fantastic and others are unworthy of merit.

Having cured myself of the Madden addiction I once had, now I find myself enjoying the more niche sports games, such as Hot Shots Golf, FIFA Soccer and the Fight Night series. Up until the right analog stick became the dominant way to play, EA’s NHL series was my all-time favorite sports franchise. I just think hockey has the best flow and pace for video games, even more than football.

So what sports games do you enjoy playing the most? Are there any sports that you don’t watch, but play the games instead? What sport do you think hasn’t reached it’s fullest potential when it comes to games? Hut, hut, hike!

  1. I’m not really into soccer but fifa 10 is on eof the most fun times i’ve had playing a sports game NHL 09 was pretty cool and i’m loving NBA 2k11 but my favorite sports game is MLB 10 the show because of how awesome taking my character from the minors to the big leagues is.

  2. I love watching football and every Sunday of mine consists of watching more than a few games. However I’ve never been one for sports video games, I’ve just never found them too interesting.

  3. My favs go all the way back to N64.
International Superstar Soccer by Konami was amazing for its time, and still is a very solid soccer game with a load of options. (It’s graphics are dated, but passable.)
Another game worth mentioning is WCW/NWO Revenge for the N64. Never before or since has a wrestling game inspired as much fun as that one did!

  4. I usually get Madden and Tiger Woods every year (I try to alternate the systems too)

They never disappoint but never blow me away. I need a Madden nearby, especially Saturday-Monday where I have football on the brain. Tiger Woods is a great single player game, the customization is ridiculous but the last couple years they just added a bunny suit or lizard costume and decided that was enough.

  5. I don’t really like sports or sports games. Airsoft is the only thing I can really say I actively take part in, and the games for airsoft are your good old Call of Duty’s or Battlefield’s. I do enjoy watching extreme sports though, and SSX3 is one of my favourite games of all time.
