Rumor: Metal Gear Rising to Strike in 2012?

metal gear rising 2012

Our podcasts are becoming strangely prescient, it seems. Only on our last show did we despair about the early announcement of games versus when they actually come out. While the target of our woe at that time was Gran Turismo 5, it can easily be applied to Konami’s up-coming Metal Gear themed hack and slasher Metal Gear Rising, which is apparently set for a 2012 release.

Metal Gear Rising, announced in the summer of 2009 as a multiplatform title, apparently won’t be making an appearance for a couple of years if Kotaku is to be believed. While they don’t cite a source, they do say that they have been “told” that the game won’t be out until 2012. I’d chalk this up to rumor for now, but as Kotaku did point out, there are usually long waits between the announcement of an MGS game and its actual appearance on store shelves. Metal Gear Solid 4, as the given example, was announced in 2005 and didn’t come out until 2008.

While Metal Gear Rising never had a firm release date, many expected that the game would be out in 2011. However, given the lack of information on the game, this change in date isn’t exactly surprising. What do you guys think of Metal Gear Rising’s delay? Does this affect your perception of the title at all? Should game companies wait to announce games until they have a release date set in stone?

  1. This is so ridiculously anti-climactic. Why make a big stink about a game when they announced this almost 2 years ago to reveal that it’s not going to be out until 2012? Even announcing it right NOW would be too soon for this. I understand that companies want to develop buzz, but 3+ years is far too long. This seems to be a thing that Japanese devs do in particular.

  2. I honestly don’t have a problem with it. They do this not just for us, but for their investors, to let them know what they have down the pipeline and that they aren’t twiddling their thumbs.

Plus, there was never a release date set for this anyway, so it’s not like Gran Turismo 5 or anything, which really looked silly delaying the game after the big hoopla with the release date being set.

And Kotaku says, “Expected” to come out in 2011. By whom? Them? Did Konami say as much? I am asking honestly because I truly don’t know the answers. I don’t really pay much attention to games until we have a release window. I mean, something as vague as 3rd Quarter 2010 is better than nothing.

I realize I am in the minority, but a company can announce a game slated for relase 10 years from now and I don’t care. I’ll play it when it comes out and in the meantime, I will play something else.

But Eddy’s right, they do need to get their crap together.

  3. Hey, just as long as it’s not a Kinect title.

Y’know, with this and GT5, I have to wonder. Is Sony bad at enforcing their timelines, or are they good at giving their developers creative freedom? I guess that’s for the fanboys to decide…

Also, it’s been awhile since I visited this blog, and I dunno when you had the revamp, but nicely done.

This is a multiplatform game that was actually originally announced for the 360.

  5. Ok, perhaps Im biased on this because I have NEVER played a MGS game in my life. But isnt this….TOO MUCH? Hasnt this game been beaten to death? Once he got old its like….ok, END THIS. I dont even play and Im tired of it. I guess its like Halo for those who didnt play, they probably were like “ok enough of this” but another MGS game????

May be off topic, but for those who HAVE played the series. Is it getting ‘ridiculous’ or is it still generally fun and still substancial in story?
