No HD Remakes in Microsoft’s Future?

KOTOR

For the last few years, I’ve been a major proponent of gaming in high definition, which is truly the best and shiniest of all definitions. I’m sure the rest of the definitions line up to pay tribute to it or something. You know, for being so high and awesome.

Because of that love of all things HD, I’m happy to see the new HD re-releases that Sony has been pulling out of its bag of tricks for the PS3. To me, last generation was perhaps the best generation of gaming we’ve had yet, so anything that helps bring those greats over to my HDTV will be welcomed by my brown burly arms. But what does Microsoft think of this new HD re-release trend?

Here’s what Microsoft Games Studio VP Phil Spencer has to say:

We obviously have a lot of new things going on, so the thought of re-doing a bunch of things is probably difficult to just weave into the overall portfolio. If you can provide real value to the customer, there could be possibilities for that, but I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it.

I guess that means I should stop holding my breath for HD re-makes of Halo, KOTOR 1 and 2, Jade Empire and Panzer Dragoon Orta then, yes? Do you guys think he’s talking crazy talk? Any other Xbox games you’d like to see in HD?

  1. I’m hoping it’s a misdirection, the Xbox had so many great games it would be a missed opportunity not to bring them to the 360.

Along with Halo and KOTOR I wouldn’t mind seeing the original Ghost Recon. Those were probably my most played games and I would be glad to play them again.

  2. I actually like what he said. If they have really great things moving forward, it’s kind of hard to look back and re-do old stuff. Kind of like a band re-releasing a “re-mastered” version of their tracks 10 years later… The true fans liked it the way it was, and don’t need some extra-polished rehash.

Then again, “moving forward” is Kinect… Sooo….

  3. That’s the Prince of Persia trilogy.

I’d love to see Halo: Combat evolved done with Reach’s engine. I think that would be a great tribute to the game that started it all. Also, actual good multiplayer maps!

Knights of the Old Republic as well,I suppose. That game looked pretty bad when it came out, and it’s aged noticeably. You can see the polygons!

  4. KOTOR I & II are amongst one of my favourite games. Have finished them multiple times and would do it once more if I had the time. 😛
/raises his both hands for the remake.
I mean, yeah, Julez has a point, but, I would really want to see one of my all-time fav. released in beautiful shiny graphics, yum.

  5. Since Panzer Dragoon Orta is one of my all time favorite games (as evidenced by my gravitar icon), it saddens me that I’ll never see it getting an hd upgrade. To be honest, though, it probably doesn’t need it because it was gorgeous when it came out and still holds up graphically. Still, the extra crispness that a coat of hd polish could bring would be amazing. Of course, nobody bought the game the first time around, so it has that going against it as well.

I think I’d actually vote for Crimson Skies or Mech Assault. Those games were awesome and it’s a pity the franchises seem to have died. Mech Assault got a sequel, obviously, but other than that it’s been a while since we’ve seen any use of the Battletech license. And I still don’t understand why Crimson Skies never really took off. The original board game (which was incredibly fun and actually way more exciting than Battletech) pretty much flopped, the pc version of the game didn’t sell well, and the xbox version only found an audience because it came packaged with the system in the early days of xbox live.

So, yeah, I guess that’s a long-winded way of saying that I want an hd Crimson Skies and Mech Assault (or any Battletech/Mechwarrior game), whether they’re remakes or sequels. I don’t own a 360, but an awesome version of either game could definitely be a system seller for me since I love those licenses so much.

  6. As someone who sees younger generations buying Reach all the time who have never played the original Halo and have interest in it, I can vouch for the fact that people would totally buy HD remakes of original Xbox games.

Yeah, that market still has to be there. My local Best Buy still stocks copies of the original Halo so somebody has to be buying it, right?
