Today’s WTF: Gran Turismo 5 Honcho Asks Players for Frame Rate Forgiveness

Gran Turismo 5

Oh, Kaz Yamauchi. I know it seems tough for you right now, with Polyphony Digital under the gun for the many Gran Turismo 5 delays. But soon, soon the game will be out (holiday season 2010, maybe?), it will be incredible as always, and all of this silliness will be behind you. Right? Maybe not.

Apparently, Gran Turismo 5 is having some frame rate issues these days. While the team at Polyphony Digital worked hard to ensure that the powerhouse racing simulator ran at a smooth 60 fps at 1080p, it doesn’t seem that this is always the case. And because of that, Yamauchi wants your forgiveness.

Check out the quote from Yamauchi himself, after the jump.

Our engineers complain every day: ‘Isn’t it enough that it’s in 1080p? Does it have to be 60fps too?’ But I think 60fps is very important, so we’re working towards perfecting that. There might be times when you have a certain combination of conditions that come together – especially with the weather effects – [when] the game might briefly drop from 60fps, and for that I beg your forgiveness!

To me, what’s funnier than the game dropping below 60 fps (most games encounter slow down when things get crazy) is the fact that he’s actually begging for forgiveness from fans of the game. Honestly, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, but it just seems ill timed with all of the other jabs currently hurled at Gran Turismo 5.

What do you guys think? Do you wish more developers were this honest?

  1. I will not accept this blasphemy… who would of thought a game going under 60 fps… pssssssssssh

but it is ok, Kaz Yamauchi, just calm down a little, dont need commit Seppuku because of it.

  2. I love all the caveats on that statement: the game “might” drop below 60 fps (how much? 30 fps? 40 fps? 55 fps?) “briefly,” but only under a “certain combination of conditions.” I’d like to know what his definition of “certain combination of conditions” might be. Does that mean that the game slows down anytime it’s raining or only when, say, the system is trying to handle the physics of driving at 175 mph on a slippery, windy road in a driving rainstorm with graphics intensive scenery and other cars flashing by in 1080p?

I like the honesty, but it won’t mean much in the bloodbath of the message boards. Somewhere there’s a fanboy trying to count frames on Forza 3 so he can quantify how badly GT 5 will suck by comparison…

  3. What if Blizzard came out and said, “I’m sorry everyone that every time you enter Orgrimmar you drop 10 frames and have to make the long walk to the auction house with only 50 FPS. Sorry.” The point is, who cares? 60 is just and number and hell, shit happens. When cars are smashing together and taking damage while sweeping vistas are in the background, or when hundreds of players are all in one 50 yard area, frame rate drops. It happens.

  4. WHAT NO 60 FPS I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS LOOK AT HOW I AM TYPING IT IS IN ALL CAPSSSS!!!!!111 FEEL MY ANGER THROUGH YOUR COMPUTER SCREENS AHHHHH!!!111!!!!!.

But in all seriousness doesn’t really matter so far the game is not released and I will hold my Judgment till i see the game for myself also what if it only drops 5 frames will it really make a difference unless it has huge slowdown that makes it unplayable then I wont mind.

  5. Oh well, I have my preorder in and I was very excited for my 4th November release date. But if they’re perfecting it for us, then of course we forgive them. I didn’t get angry anyway, the longer the wait, the better the game. I have extremely high expectations of this game and I hope they meet every last one. I believe this will be the game of 2010, and maybe of the 21st century (till something better comes out).

  6. Seems to me now that he brought it up its gonna be on everyones mind when they play it. Instead of reviewers noticing a little bit of frame rate issues now they’ll be looking for it and itlll stand out more. Doesnt matter though, itll be released in 2012 so they have a couple years to work on it, the Mayan calendar just ends with GT5

  7. Just turn down the resolution and take down the graphics a notch…

ohhhh wait, this isn’t on PC I forgot!!! =D.

I’ve always loved the gran turismo games when I played console, but this wouldn’t make me buy a PS3..
