About Time: Mass Effect 2 On PS3 In 2011

Mass Effect 2 PS3

File this one under “better late than never”, for sure. There has been speculation for some time that EA and Bioware would eventually bring their critically acclaimed Mass Effect series over to the PS3, and it seems that the time has finally come. At Gamescom today, Bioware announced that Mass Effect 2 will hit for Sony’s machine in January 2011.

While there doesn’t seem to be any word about the first Mass Effect and whether or not it will come included as part of an anthology or if it simply won’t be showing up at all, this is still exciting news. Even though the experience will be slightly diminished without your choices carrying over between two games in such an unprecedented way, Mass Effect 2 will still have a lot for newcomers to enjoy. In terms of storytelling, it’s one of the better games of this generation, and it has to be one of the best and most developed original universes we’ve seen in gaming to date.

I know a bunch of you have already played this game, but surely, there are some happy PS3 users among us who will jump on this on release day. My next question is: what about Mass Effect 3?

  1. This is really great news for PlayStation owners. If you haven’t been able to experience Mass Effect before, you’re definitely getting one of the most refined shooter/RPGs I’ve ever played.

The other good news to come of this is a whole new source of income for BioWare, and that’s not bad at all.

  2. The first one will not come to the PS3 because Microsoft has the publishing rights, but it’s still good for PS3 owners to experience the awesomeness.

  3. Sweet!!!

When I first saw the headline elsewhere I had to stop and check the date to make sure that it wasn’t somehow April 1st.

This is pretty much the only 360 exclusive game that I wished was multiplatform and I’d seriously entertained the idea of buying a 360 just to play this game.

I’m eager to see what those “hours and hours” of extra content they mentioned will turn out to be. DLC packs?

I’m a little disappointed that I won’t be able to play through the first game and have my choices carry over, but this is better than not having ME2 at all so I won’t complain.

Does anyone think that they might include some kind of alignment choice at the beginning of the game that will affect the storyline? For example, if you pick Renegade Sheppard then your ME2 experience plays out as if you’d made exclusively Renegade choices in ME1 and if you choose Paragon (I think that’s what it’s called, right?) then the game assumes that you made all good choices in ME1?

I think that sounds like an easy and suitable compromise; it can’t be harder than programming the game to react to everything you did on your actual savegame file, right?

  4. Zayven, if I remember correctly, ME2 gives you the choice on some pre-arranged backgrounds anyway, but it’s been a few months since I’ve played it. They made it assuming that some people had not played ME1 first.

  5. Nah, Mass Effect 2 assumed that you did a Renegade playthrough if it didn’t detect a ME1 save on you HDD.

Pre-release versions had a “choose your background” type menu before the game started, so we might see that on the PS3.

  6. ME2 was by far one of the best games I’ve ever played. If they bring it to the PS3 it means people without 360s and gaming rigs will be able to have a slice of the action, and be able to bring the actions from ME2 into ME3. They took a while bringing GTA IV to PC and now they’re just taking a while to bring ME2 to PS3. I wonder what trophies there will be? Try and get into bed with at least 2 women? xP

  7. I’m kinda wondering how the graphics will be after that little thing with the ps3 version of mafia 2 not having the grass like the 360 version but i’m sure that will be answered. I’ll be sure to pick it up if and when I can.

That sort of thing depends on the developer and I can’t see Bioware doing a half-assed job.
