Current Top 10 Selling Games of 2010

PokemonMaybe you haven’t noticed yet, but 2010 is almost over. Yes, for serious. While in most gaming years this might not be anything to take special note of, Modern Warfare 2’s release in 2009 ensured that we’ve had the kind of gaming we’ve always dreamed of, spread out over this current trip around the sun. I honestly can’t remember the last time we’ve had this many great titles to play before September, and maybe there’s never been another year like it.

Because there’s lots to play, there’s clearly a lot of people purchasing games. Yahoo has just released a list of the top 10 selling games of 2010 so far, and you might actually be surprised by a few of the results. Or maybe you are awesome, and you totally will predict everything on the list.

Anyway, feel free to hit the jump to see the full list of best sellers. Because I’m nice like that.

1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
2. Pokemon Silver
3. Red Dead Redemption
4. God of War III
5. Wii Fit Plus
6. Wii Sports Resort
7. Pokemon HeartGold
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
9. Just Dance
10. Super Mario Galaxy 2

I know that Nintendo games sell like really adorable kittens, but I’m still always shocked by just how many of their first party games populate these lists. The guys have the secret sauce that makes people rush out to throw money at them, and I wish I had the formula, because I would die a stupid rich man. Also, I’m shocked that New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Modern Warfare 2, all released last year are on this list and thriving over things like Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2 and so forth.

So what do you guys think about this list? Surprised?

  1. Wow, Nintendo just continues to print it’s own money. I’m kind of surprised to see Red Dead Redemption so high on the list, but then again it was really the only game that came out in the last six months that appealed to the entire “hardcore” audience.

God of War 3 is a bit of a surprise too; I didn’t realize the franchise still had those kind of legs, especially since it’s not a multiplatform game like Red Dead or MW2.

  2. I’m glad that Pokemon Silver and Gold are up there. That generation of Pokemon could arguably be called the greatest in terms of game-play and replay value, and it’s good to see that people are playing what Pokemon should have been, instead of what the new ones are (not to take anything away from them, but they’re not as long, not as expansive)

  3. I’m disappointed, but not too surprised. Considering the fact the Nintendo appeals to people that aren’t “hardcore” gamers, they managed to bring in a whole new client base as is evident in the list. I’m with adaminator1 though. Where is Final Fantasy?

  4. Dang, why is Soul Silver four places higher than Heart Gold? Now I feel dumb for buying that version. 🙁

That aside, I’m glad that Red Dead Redemption is doing well. I know there was some kerfuffle over Rockstar’s treatment of their employees (with exaggerations on both sides, I’m sure), but I want this game to do well so I can see more good Western inspired games. Red Dead got me to go back and watch the old Man With No Name trilogy, and I’ve been loving it.

  5. This list saddens me. However I will say that Wii Sports Resort only sold well because of its Wii Motion Plus inside, just like Wii Play sold because of the controller.

  6. @SK Beans: Have you played Wii Sports Resort? It’s actually a really good game, unlike Wii Play. Yeah, the pack in is an incentive, but you can buy one for $20 bucks and pretty much every game that uses it came packed with it upon release.

Just because a game is “casual” (whatever that means) doesn’t mean it’s automatically bad or will diminish the humanity of anyone who buys a copy.

I think that the difference between Red Dead and GTA4 was the story flow, as well as the travel time. As much as I believe that RockStar did a great job capturing the experience of walking down a street in/driving through New York, it’s not always fun in real life, and it wasn’t always fun in the game.

As for your Heart Gold/Soul Silver thing, Heart Gold has different pokemon, some of them not which are not as popular as say, pokemon from Soul Silver. Also, if my memory serves me, Soul Silver gives you a stronger Ho-oH, which is considered by some people to be the stronger pokemon (which I disagree with, as Lugia can fly, use water/ice attacks, as well as psychic and dark attacks, while Ho-oH can only fly and use fire attacks, even if it does have a much stronger special/base attack) and when you get Lugia, I believe that its skills are better at the lower level than they are at the higher level (where some have been out-learned, though you could always take it to the move tutor), though I might be wrong on that part. Everything else is correct though. Also, people pick Silver because they like the starting cinema for Lugia more than they do for Ho-oh, and they like how Lugia looks, so that should tell you how much it really matters to pick either one.

Hey Mitch, can you trade pokemon from Leaf Green and Fire Red to Heart Gold like you could with the original Red/Blue/Yellow and Silver/Gold? Also, how far are you in the game?

  8. I’ve refrained from personally purchasing anything from Nintendo since the Wii came out, but I might buy A DSi just to revel in the nostalgia of the good Pokemon games. I’ll try not to spoil anything if you’ve never played, but the big battle with Team Rocket was one of the most grueling times I’ve had with a sort of tactical RPG like Pokemon when I was younger.

  9. Also, if you want a more “badass” experience (as bad ass as Pokemon can get anyway) play the original. It’s not as cutesy and childish as Heart Gold, but then again, what isn’t cutesy on the Nintendo anymore, though I’ll stop bashing them now, as they’ve come out with some good games, and have probably done more for gaming on a whole with their induction of popular society to gaming than most people in the gaming community realize.

  10. Not surprised to see the Nintendo 1st party games. Kinda surprised FFXIII isn’t there. And saddened that I’m not seeing BFBC2. To show how sad I am, here’s an emoticon:
    🙁
    See now?

  11. @TravelingManIII

I’m right before the Kimono Girls, grinding levels because I am embarrassingly behind. I beat the Rising Badge with a low level Gyrados, but I can’t beat these damn Kimono Girls.

Ah yeah. If I remember they’ve got the evolved eevee’s right? Try to use a steel type. I don’t know if you can use the pokemon Aron or it’s evolved forms yet (it’s in some cave, I forget where, but once you get it, it ivolves into the a very powerful Steel/Ground pokemon, with similar stats to Tyranotaur, except it’s got a much higher def/special def and possibly more attack, maybe not, but much less spec attack/speed.) but that’d be the best choice against them. You usually only find it at low levels, but since it’s def., spec. def., and attack are so high, if I remember correctly, and since it can learn a lot of TM’s, you can beat most of them with one at quite a low level. You’re going to have one Kimono girl who’s going to be super effective, but she’ll be water or something (the only thing that affects Aron, as his steel weakness to electricity gets canceled out by his ground type) so you should be able to beat that one easily with a few pokemon.

  13. And I take back that comment back about the move tutor. Was thinking about the one from Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald. I think that there’s someone in Heart Gold that can teach your pokemon old moves, but I might be wrong, in any case, you still get at least one ridiculously powerful attack for Lugia in your version, and some good defensive abilities, plus it’s at level 70 so that’s good. And I also remember now why people liked Lugia at 45. When you train it from that level, it gets stronger later on at level 70, than finding the one in the wild at level 70, as trained pokemon gain more stats EV stats while they level (some special stat that boosts certain stats that you already have depending on what pokemon you train against) than wild pokemon, which get none and only rely on base stats. That’s a bigger worry for people who are going to seriously compete though, and not simply play it through.

  14. Yep, they have all the evolved Evees. I have an Onyx that I’m leveling to deal with the Umbreon because it can learn fighting moves which are super-effective against Dark. Gonna trade with a buddy who has Soul Silver to get Steelix and Gengar, then I should be set. I’ve been able to squeak by with a low level team, but I’m kind of stonewalled there.

Hey look Eddy, your topic turned into a Pokemon FAQ!

Sounds good man. Try to ditch that Onyx later on, though, unless you like him. Steelix can be good.

Heh. Anthony, I don’t play Pokemon anymore (but I have a lot of memories battling friends/trading and building up the impressive team, only to find some kid none of us really knew that had some awesome set up that destroyed us), but most people don’t realize that while it might seem like a childish game, and the TV show was, well, the TV show, there’s actually quite a bit of math, statistics, and tatics that goes into making your Pokemon team the best of the best (if you’re interested, look up pokemon DV’s, EV’s, Stat Experience, etc.) It’s why so many people spent so much time training up pokemon, and why the competitions were successful initially.

But anyway, all this talk about this stuff has sparked some serious nostalgia for old games. Going to go chew through Balloon Kid, Super Adventure Island, and Links Awakening.

  17.
Mitch, as cool as Onyx looks he sucks. Big time.
I know, he’s the weak link on my team. If this was earlier, I could swap him out, but I’ve invested a lot of time in to training him. Maybe go back and level a Geodude?

    Hey Mitch.

    This: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Aron_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29

was the Pokemon I recommended you get before. You can get it in the Safari Zone. It evolves into

    This: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Aggron_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29

It’s more powerful than Steelix on average, and faster, for a small reduction in defense. The biggest advantage however, are the TMs it can learn, which outnumber Steelix’s.

You could level a Geodude. It all depends on your preference. It’s a good idea to have as many types that cancel each other out as possible. Steel types usually have more defense and special defense than Rock types, which is the main advantage to having a rock type, and both are equally powerful, with steel types being stronger in most cases. The Steel type weakness is that electricity is super effective, as opposed to rock, that isn’t affected at all, but a dual type like Steel/Rock or Steel/Ground can counteract that.

  19.
Don’t judge, man. If we were talking Dragon Quest IX, you’d be all up in this conversation, haha.
Haha, so if I never played a Pokemon, Mitch…where should I start?

  20. Some wrong info in that previous post. Electricity affects steel types normally, whereas rocks aren’t affected. Fire (which doesn’t affect rock as much) is super effective, as well as ground and fighting attacks (Aggron is an exception. Fire doesn’t affect him as much because of his ground type, but he is weak to water) And Steels have more defense than rocks, and around the same or weaker attack on average, but some Steel’s are stronger than most rock Pokemon, like Aggron. Tyranitaur is also a very powerful Pokemon in terms of attack and spec. attack that you can get in the safari zone, that can also learn some good TM’s, but it’s rare, (you find a Larvitar in Safari) and is Dark/Ground, though it still has ok defense, it’ll die faster at lower levels, but it’s better than being weak against fighting, which has some powerful moves.

  21. Ugh.

Look at the best selling music of 2010 so far and you’ll have similar results: Not a lot of the list is musical at all =/

    There’s always a few outliers… but God…

She was hot before she got popular. Now she’s just “culturally aware” or something (note: that’s a good thing). I swear, she either got an ass and breast reduction, or push-ups and booty pop’s are much more effective on near flat ones than I realized. Or maybe it was just the coloring in Alejandro. Your a film guy Anthony, your thoughts?

Also, possibly the fact that that video was unbearable to watch for more than 10 seconds, and if you’re a man and you don’t know why, I question your T levels.
