Poll: Impatience and Upgrading

Starcraft II. It’s out. It’s been clamored for since last decade. And now everybody and their mom seems to be playing it. Well, everybody that is, except me. You see, I’ve found myself in a bit of a pickle over Starcraft II’s epic release.

Here’s the rundown: it’s been almost 5 years since I upgraded my PC. I think I did it the year I got married, which was all the way back in 2005, before the days of Leet World. In fact, TLW was part of the reason that I upgraded in the first place, in order to get ready for that kind of work. As such, my PC can just barely play SCII, much to my sadness.

So, I’m left with a bit of a choice. I was hoping to upgrade sometime in the next 5-6 months, which will make my PC able to easily tackle this grand RTS. However, I still want to play it, and play it now, because I feel like I’m missing out on all the fun. The problem is, on my crappy system, I’m not sure how much fun it will actually be.

What would you guys do if you were in my shoes? I thought I’d put it to a vote. Go!

What would you do?

  1. Well, if H3 for PC comes out tomorrow (big If, by the way), then I think everyone would grit their teeth and bare it, me included. SC2 will still retain its glory in low-def…somewhat.
It really comes down to graphics vs storyline. Personally, I’m story.

  2. So, I’ve been playing this, and the campaign is pretty meh so far. Admittedly, I’m not that far into the game, but so far it’s not grabbing me.

I really suck at versus. I was playing a match the other day and I was texting my friend asking him what the counters to certain Zerg units were for Terrans (true story).

So, if you’re doing campaign, buy it now. If you want to do versus, wait. Having people slow down the match is incredibly annoying (no offense).

  3. See, that would be helpful if I wasn’t in the middle of a match. Why didn’t the box edition come with a chart?

Also, people seem to be of two minds about the campaign. Either they love it, or they think it’s running on nostalgia instead of being relevant and fresh. To each his own, but I’m in the second camp so far.

  4. I say wait. Like you said, “everybody and their mom seems to be playing it”, and you know they will be for the next 10 years…

  5. There are a lot of things you can do to speed up your PC (processing power, graphics rendering, and program handling, I’m assuming). That said, I think that you can buy it now and upgrade later. You may have to settle with the usual reduced quality issues, and further tweaks to make gameplay smooth, however, if you’re the type of person that is going to settle with bad graphics/animations if you can play the game well, then I would say wait. You want to eventually get the full experience.
