Today’s WTF: Metal Gear Without David Hayter

snakeThis news could possibly be the death knell of Metal Gear Solid: Rising for me, even though I’ve seen nothing of the game since last E3. According to rumors, the game, subtitled “Tactical Lightning Action”, will be out sometime next year, and no one has phoned David Hayter yet! For those of you who don’t know who this man is, he’s the guy who’s been providing the gravelly-voiced delivery for Solid Snake for the last twelve years. He’s also a Hollywood screen writer with credits for X-Men and X-Men 2 in addition to the Watchmen draft that stodgy Alan Moore gave his approval to.

One might say that Hayter is the linchpin of Metal Gear Solid in North America, so what will a Metal Gear game without Solid Snake be like? Granted, the game is assumed to be about Raiden, but even Metal Gear Solid 2 (which had Raiden as the main protagonist), featured a lot of Snake. What do you guys think? Could Rising be completely Snake free? What are your thoughts on this game, now that a full year has gone by? Keep in mind that this is just a rumor, but it’s puzzling none the less.

  1. Kind of disappointing, but to be fair, the game IS centered around Raiden. Plus we don’t really know what Snake did in the time between MGS2 and 4 when his accelerated aging kicked in, so that would provide a convenient plot device. Although it would be cool if we see Snake from time to time in the game, getting older and older than before to show his accelerated aging.

  2. Yeah, I had no idea Snake would even be in this from the beginning, so this isn’t that surprising to me. I’m sure it will be okay, lol.

Kojima’s batshit crazy is what makes MGS special. But he better bring it if Hayter isn’t around.

  3. I’m sure he’ll bring all sorts of craziness.

Knowing Kojima, would anyone be surprised if he has a big E3 announcement that MGS Rising is exclusively a Move/Natal game? A mini-game collection starring Raiden, perhaps? There could be a cooking game where he has to make dinner for Rose or a series of carnival games involving “carny” versions of Psycho Mantis and Revolver Ocelot!

I’m sending this idea to Kojima right now. It’s been way too long since he screwed over his fanbase; surely he just needs a little inspiration.

  4. I’m just not interested in this game in the slightest. I don’t know why anyone at Konami thinks that what people want is another game with Raiden. I mean, it worked so well for them the first time, right?

I propose we save this quote for the future; to see how right or wrong it is. Who is with me?

Didn’t everyone love Raiden after he was a bad ass in MGS4?

Personally, I will try this, but since I have to really love any MGS game, I am not expecting much. But I always come back for more, much like an Alzheimer’s patient.

  7. @ Anthony, yea Raiden got a lot of love after becoming a cyborg ninja. They’re instant favourites in MGS. He kinda went from zero to hero…. like Ahmad! I’m disappointed that Snake’s unlikely to be in it. Also there’s a rumour that the person on the cover is actually Sunny (Olga’s daughter). It’s an interesting thought but I’d doubt it is her. Just thought I would mention that.

  8. Is Hayter really THAT necessary for the game to be good? I mean, a lot of people in Japan play MGS just fine without him, right?

Then again, if you have to watch 45 minute cutscenes with the character, I guess you’d want to have a voice actor that you like.

  9. Wait, now I’ve confused myself.

Are we upset that Snake might not be in the game or that Hayter might not be providing the voice for Snake?

Hold on, I don’t even like Metal Gear! Why did I even get involved in this conversation?

haha, I have no idea. I don’t like it, either, although I am going to give the first game a try sometime soon.

  11.
Maybe anybody that liked MGS 4 liked Raiden more, but I wouldn’t include myself in that group.
Glad to see you weren’t fooled.
