New Dragon Age DLC Lets You Command Darkspawn

Darkspawn ChroniclesLast year, Dragon Age Origins stood out to me as one of the better RPG experiences I’ve had this gen. Even though there were parts of it that frustrated me, overall it was a really solid game that created a rich world with a vibrant history. It was everything I want from a fantasy game. Of course, now that I’ve played Mass Effect 2, I know that there are even better things to come, but the game still deserves its due.

So imagine my delight when I saw that even more DLC is coming to the Bioware RPG in the form of something we haven’t quite seen before. The new DLC, Darkspawn Chronicles, let’s you play as the Darkspawn vanguard attacking Denerim at the end of the game proper. It lets you explore an alternate history, one where the Grey Warden is killed and you get to see (and play) what happens when the bad guys win.

I think that has to be some of the more unique DLC that I’ve heard of so far. While I haven’t played Awakening yet, this seems like something that is also worthy of a purchase, especially at only 5 big ones. So what do you guys think of this idea? Should more games dabble in alternate history and endings via DLC?

  1. sounds very Overlordyish, command darkspawn hmmm….. too bad I have no money to get the game in the first plave. It astounds me to hear about how you guys go through so many games. That’s probably one of the benefits of being out of school and having a job.

  2. I’m dying to continue my Grey Warden’s story so this is somewhat of a disappointment to me, however it does look quite interesting. And Eddy btw Awakening is great, however I would suggest letting the price drop 5-10 dollars. It’s really fun and has about 15-20 hours of gameplay.

  3. This is a really cool idea. I’m a big fan of Marvel’s “What Ifs” and the Star Wars Infinity comic books, so alternate takes on established histories are really neat.

I wonder if your Darkspawn can nail Darkspawn Morrigan…

  4. I’m on the fence. DA:O is a great game and Awakening is superb, but I’m ‘meh’ on the idea that instead of being a notable villian for the ‘what if’ you’re just some nameless Hurlock amongst a bunch of guys who have no option for any type of dialogue.

That, and butchering your party-mates is a little… uncomfortable.

  5. This is very cool and I am glad they are trying new things with DLC, as opposed to others (Prince of Persia) which change the ending or whatnot.
