More Audio Commentary in Video Games

PortalI wouldn’t necessarily call myself an audio commentary guy, really, but there have been a few times where listening to audio commentary for movies has greatly enhanced my appreciation of the film. Aliens, for instance, is pretty spectacular to listen to, even though James Cameron can be a douche at times. Likewise, Serenity’s commentary track with Joss Whedon is a must-hear, as well as anything with Bruce Campbell in it.

The concept of audio commentary in video games is a relatively new one, and not something I hear about too often. I know that Valve included audio commentary as part of the Orange Box, specifically Portal, which was a fascinating endeavor to me. I recently saw this list of 5 games we wish had audio commentary on GamesRadar, and it got me thinking about this whole subject.

So what do you guys? Do you want audio commentary for some of your favorite games? What games do you want it for? Personally, I would love to hear audio commentary for the first MGS game, Super Mario 64, and Beyond Good and Evil. Go!

  1. Sonic The Hedgehog 2(and 3)
    Bioshock and Bioshock 2
Pretty much all the Zelda games.
Half life 1(I dont recall that having commentary? Does it?)

  2. It’s either the really innovative ones, or the very crappy games that needs commentary: what were they thinking when they made it?

Fallout 3 would be nearly impossible
    Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet?

    I’d also appreciate indie games.
    World of Goo

Fallout 3 would be awesome, it would be cool if you could unlock the commentary (which would be done by the people who worked on that specific location/quest) for each location. not that I need another excuse to waist countless hours in that game.

Uncharted 2 for sure, any indie game, and Mass Effect 1&2.

  4. Yeah, I was also thinking about Audio Commentaries. I really enjoyed the commentary for the Orange Box and Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, and it’s just relaxing to go through a level, get some inside info, and gain a deeper appreciation or just notice those small details that are in the game.

I’d like to see a Fallout 3 / New Vegas commentary, and they could do that if they let the player fast travel between audio nodes and points of interest and enemies and stuff.
    The Persona series
    Halo Reach
Call of Duty: Black Ops (especially Commie Zombies)
    Assassin’s Creed 3
    Any Zelda / Metroid stuff
    and more…

  5. I’d like to hear it in some classic games, considering how they’ve influenced current games.

    Half-Life (We all agree..)
    Deus Ex
    The Longest Journey
    Hitman (the first one only)
    Max Payne

just a few ideas floating in my head.
