GamerSushi Asks: Are Games Pissing You Off?

conviction
One thing I’ve been noticing a lot recently is that it takes fewer and fewer annoyances to make me give up a game in frustration. In my youth, I used to be able to look past repeated cheap deaths or terrible voice acting, but now that I’m older and my time has become increasingly more valuable I’m throwing aside games that rub me the wrong way very quickly.

A couple examples of this have come from two demos I’ve played recently: Splinter Cell: Conviction and Just Cause 2. While they both have the makings of two very fun titles, there are certain aspects of both that make me doubt whether or not I even want to bother with them. I’m going to sound a little petty here, but just hear me out. For Splinter Cell: Conviction, I was having a decent time tagging guys and doing silent take-downs, even if I did find the actions a little repetitious after a while. Once I got detected by the guards, that’s when I started to get agitated. While they’re searching for you, the various henchmen populating the level will spout phrases like: “Target lost, requesting update!”, or, “Continuing search for the target!” over and over until you put several bullets through their skulls. While this may not be enough to set most people off, having to listen to a dozen automatons bark their dialogue while waving their flashlights around really did the game in for me.

For Just Cause 2, the problem happened the first time I died. I was very, very high up, somewhere above some sort of missile silo. Instead of recognizing I was dead and letting me respawn, the game forced me to watch my slow, physics-abated decent through the various boxes and scaffolding of the silo. About a minute later, I hit the ground and the game gave me the opportunity to reload my previous save. Despite the fact that I was having a blast grappling dudes and attaching them to propane tanks, the mere act of watching my character tumble to his death for a length of time greater than one minute caused me to quit.

Even games that I’ve played in the past, like Mass Effect 2 or Bad Company 2, will cause me to rage quit with very little provocation. Am I slowly going insane due to the fact that I am Canadian and therefore confined to an igloo for eleven months of the year, or am I starting to outgrow video games? Is anyone else experiencing something similar, or am I alone in my despair?

  1. I’d have to say that two titles that annoy me quickly are Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Bad Company 2. With Vegas 2, the AI can get very annoying very quickly, with their repetitious yelling of taunts and “I can’t find him!” that can get annoying, and also when they either keep rushing you from everywhere or sniping you with a shotgun.
And with Bad Company 2, there are also the same instances with shotgun sniping, and also when the enemy instantly knows where you are, though you might not of given away your location.

  2. Mitch, this happens a lot to me. My time is precious and if I feel like it is being wasted, I quit playing. And for demos, I have even less patience.

  3. Hmm… definitely BC2 for me. Epic game… sometimes.
The singleplayer is too bull. Definitely an “afterthought”. As for the multiplayer, the snipers who spam the back button is a pain in the arse. Spotting you, even when you’re invisible. Horrible…
What’s even worse is the 8 Snipers per Team, 4 Normal People per team.

  4. YOU’RE CANADIAN! GRRRAAAAAAAAGGH! GIVE US BACK OUR MEDAL!!!

    Just kidding.

I’ve had the same problem. I used to not really get frustrated with video games. In fact, that was the one thing that I NEVER got frustrated with. I was a pretty angsty pre-teen (yeah, pre-teen not pubescent, weird huh?) kid, and only video games helped me calm down and not get a big DICK. It definitely has something to do with FPS’s. Whenever I’m playing any FPS – usually just multiplayer – I will flip shit and smear crayons all over my speech, typically because the death was bullshit, noobish, or perhaps causes me to scream and shout nonsense. That’s why I don’t play MW2 anymore because I’m fed up with the bullshit spawn-die-spawn-die routine that neither my friends nor I nor by bloody team can escape from and reach the Nirvana of Pwnage. Er, I mean Sniping, Commando-ing, or Camping. I suppose I’m justified with hating MW2, but with other FPS’s I’ll get pretty mad at deaths from snipers or…any death really. I admit I haven’t been playing BFBC2 so much because I keep dying, but honestly it isn’t so bad, and I do fairly well if I keep my wits about me and trust in the Heart of the AKS-74u.
As for non-multiplayer FPS games like RPG’s, Adventures, and even Platformers which are known for their cheap deaths occasionally, I don’t get very frustrated and failure, unless it is actual bullshit. Oh, and Left 4 Dead. If I have a good or at least decent team, I don’t get pissed easily, typically because I’m uber sex. If I’m stuck with a troika of twat-faced retard asshole punk bitches, then yes I will quit. Fuck that shit, I’ve got bitches and ho’s to smash.

  5. Oh! MW2 Multiplayer is the worst if you’re gonna try to play without annoyances. The spamming of Akimo sawn-offs and Model 1887’s are really bad

  6. Ugh, don’t get me started…

I love Left 4 Dead 2, I really do, but Versus just pisses me off a lot of times. Like how me, as a Charger, will repeatedly charge through solid bodies, but when the enemy Charger clearly misses my body but then I teleport into his hand…that’s just annoying. And then there’s the usual “teammates won’t bother to save you” bullshit.

Another one is Perfect Dark, the XBLA release. The goddamn Combat Simulator challenges (the ones from around 22-30) are just annoying as shit. Sims will run circles around you and kill you the second they see a pixel of you. Thankfully I only have Challenge 30 left.

  7. I don’t find the stupidity of AI Speech that annoying, just more motivation to shoot them. I am however getting more and more fed up with online play.

I recently discovered GTAIV’s online to be A LOT of fun… But starting up Social Club, and letting the game load, then loading a saved game, THEN opening the cellphone and finding a server and THEN connecting… it actually takes 10 minutes just to get into a match… that’s suuuch a waste of time (unless i’m drunk)

p.s. Igloo’s keep us playing, it’s our excuse since we can’t go outside for fear of polar bears and -50C. =)
