The Future of 3D Gaming?

For the record, I have never been a fan of the idea of 3D coming into our homes and to our gaming consoles. To me, the idea of strapping something to my face to watch and interact with the media I own seems rather ludicrous, cumbersome and ultimately lame. However, if this is what the direction of 3D in gaming is like, then I might have suddenly become a believer.

Check out this proof of concept video where a Nintendo DSi camera is linked to the software, creating startling 3D images within the screen of the handheld itself. Basically, the camera is recognizing the relative position and viewing angle and adjusting the image to match. The result? Awesome 3D. What do you guys think?

  1. That’s pretty cool, but I don’t think I’ll jump up to tilt my 32″ LCD when I want 3d on my 360. I have no interest in 3D and many others don’t as well, so I don’t know why so many companies are shelling out so much money towards it.

  2. Wow, that is awesome. I could totally get into that. Much better than wearing silly headgear in the living room. Hope they can use it to come up with some awesome game ideas.

  3. Very cool. I just don’t see how this could be applied to many games. I-spy and Where’s Waldo type games would be fun, but difficult to implement this into hardcore stuff.

It would be cool for something like the GTA titles, just a little bit of it to see around buildings and rotate the camera. Could be fun.

Here’s a demo of similar technology on a TV:

The tilting mechanic only makes sense on the DS because it’s a portable – I think you’re safe from having to tilt your LCD to get 3D using this method. The basic eye tracking tech still has utility on a regular TV.

  5. Yea it’s cool that it works, but I can’t see it implemented into games we play now. Many people say it would work for FPSs, but I cannot see how.

Wow that’s pretty cool. Take away the headgear (maybe put it into my XBL headset?) and I’m sold. However, my gaming life will go on happily without it, so I still believe so much money should not be put into it, which if you say CES, is a LOT.

  7. I fear that this would become just like motion controls are today, just a gimmick that is tacked on. I also cannot see its use in anything other than a puzzle type game.
