GamerSushi Asks: Repeated Playthroughs

dragon-age-dlcThese days, I just don’t get a lot of time to replay games all that often. I’m so busy that as soon as I finish a game, I go right past it and move on to the next. I very rarely take the time, even when I’m in the midst of playing it, to stop and enjoy what’s going on with the experience.

Back when I was younger, this was of course very different. I would play through games again and again like my life depended on it. It didn’t matter if I had beaten it a million times, I would load it up repeatedly just to see how quick I could beat it, or to explore every last nook and cranny. This was definitely the case with Starfox, Mario 64 and Metal Gear Solid. While I haven’t done this in years, Dragon Age: Origins has reversed this trend.

I keep finding myself wanting to go back and replay big parts of the story with a new character to see how things might be different. I’ve already gone through nearly every origin story, and I’m tempted to take a new city elf female character to some pretty major plot points. In my mind, it takes a special kind of game to have that effect on me in a time when I’m kind of swamped personally.

So what about you guys? What games do you play over and over again? What game has made you do this the most?

  1. I used to do this with Rogue Squadron for the N64 and Shadows of the Empire.

    Now, it’s a lot tougher. I plan on replaying Bioshock and GTA IV at some point, but it hasn’t happened yet.

    I was actually just thinking in the car on the way to work if I would replay this with different characters. Very timely, Rivas. Now I have to search my car for the camera you obviously had installed.

  2. Mine is Fallout 3 – 5 characters, 8 days of playtime and countless hours spent in the GECK (modding tool)

  3. Mass Effect. I played that through so many times. Both Knights of the Old Republic games, as well. Besides Jade Empire, Dragon Age is the only BioWare game I don’t feel like playing through more than once.

  4. Well, I usually play through games a lot of times. I played through Resi 5 between 15 and 20 times. However, I had to do that in relation to getting the trophies. This is the exact opposite of what trophies generally make me do. I played through Uncharted 2 4 or so times, once on normal, hard and crushing and then once more to get the remaining treasures. My PS3’s data was wiped and Uncharted 2 wasn’t backed up so I’ve got a good reason to redo everything. Borderlands I have yet to complete for a variety of reasons:
    1. AC2 held me back;
    2. My friends may get it close to/on Christmas and;
    3. My Borderlands data wasn’t backed up either!
    But I’m sure I’ll replay it.
    RPGs are different. I’ll play through them once for 80+ hours and feel my purchase was justified (maybe twice if it was a shorter game and had more play styles like Fallout 3).

  5. When I was younger, I did replay through games much more often. Now I find myself only playing through them if they are really great games, and completely deserving.
    When I was 16, I can hardly count how many times I played through Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I know I at least played through the entire game 7 times. Recently, I have played through fallout 3 two times, and Resident evil 5 two times (Partly because of different friends getting the game).

  6. Super Mario World and Mario Kart for the SNES. I can play those every day. In terms of less casual games, I have finished Deus Ex more times than I can count, and Half-Life 2 probably 8 or 10 times.

    Right now I have reinstalled American McGee’s Alice, which will be only my 2nd time playing through it. ^ I’m excited for the new Burton movie, I had to do it.

  7. Normally I don’t play through games more than once, actually. I beat the game, and then every once in a while I go back to some, but for some reason I don’t usually. But like all you guys I do have my exceptions. I beat Portal so many times in new ways and in speed runs and trying to beat old times, it must’ve been 20 times at least. I played Mass Effect 2 or 3 times for achievements and because it was that good of a game. KotOR I only beat once but exhausted every quest in that game and beat the hell out of it, but the most recent was MW2. I beat it 3 times in a couple weeks along with extended hours of multiplayer. I beat it once on Normal for the experience, once on Veteran, and once on Easy for all the Intel and because it was that interesting and going back to it really helped.

    And I almost forgot about SW: Republic Commando! That game is still the definition of awesome, they need to make another because I beat it numerous times and loved every playthrough and the Multiplayer was very good as well, I just don’t think it recieved the attention it deserved.
