GamerSushi Asks: Greatest Single Player Game?

uncharted2Two great single player games are coming out today, in case you didn’t know. That’s right, both Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend are dropping today, and from the reports, they are both awesome. In fact, Adam Sessler referred to Uncharted 2 as the greatest single player game he’s ever played. Ever. While it’s usually hard to take such grand statements seriously, I can’t help but get hyped for this game.

So it got me thinking about what the greatest single player game I’ve ever played actually is. There are quite a few of them, to be honest. Knights of the Old Republic, Mario 64, Final Fantasy 7 and Suikoden III come to mind. Also, Shadow of the Colossus is a strong contender for number one as well.

I’m very much aware that this topic of discussion is the complete opposite end of the spectrum from one we had last week, but I wanted to explore it anyway. So what about you guys? What’s the best single player game you’ve ever played? And are any of you going to pick up Brutal Legend or Uncharted 2? Go!

  1. Damn, that’s a tough question. I like a lot singleplayer games…but the best one…hmmmm…

    I can’t decide…either Vampire 2 (with all Fan-made patches) or GTA4…but GTA4 has a multiplayer-mode, so I guess it’s Vampire 2, then.

  2. My favorite SP games include everything Valve has ever done, Warlords Battlecry I, II and III, Call of Duty and Medal of Honor (all of them) and Halo:CE and Halo 2.
When I have my Xbox 360, I’m so going to get Halo 3 and Brutal Legends!

  3. For me, it would have to be either Majora’s Mask or Metroid Prime. I just love those two games so much. I know that Majora’s Mask is kind of the black sheep of the 3D Zelda family, but it was really compelling for me. I only ever played it once, so maybe that’s my nostalgia talking, but I remember nothing but good things about that game.

I’m picking up Uncharted 2 for sure, and I’m waiting until my next paycheck for Brutal Legend.

  4. Normally the first word blurted out of my mouth would be Morrowind, but Psychonauts was pretty awesome too…
    eh, Morrowind.

  5. Still picking up Uncharted 2 on Friday. I will echo Metroid Prime and SotC and add Hitman: Blood Money and COD4. Yeah, COD4. There were so many great and memorable bits. Also, my FAVE Final Fantasy, FFX and to finish off my long list (I had more, but I’d bore you all lol) Dark Chronicle! 😀

  6. Just nabbed Uncharted 2 at Best Buy today. They’re running a deal where you get $20 off a PS3 headset when you get it, so I got both. 🙂

  7. Well I’ve played a lot if Solo games, so I’m basing this list not on genre but on story (gripping plot, smooth flow, and realistic and/or badass or just otherwise awesome characters), gameplay (tight and/or innovative controls, and replayability), and whether or not it serves as either an epic movie or classic literature. So here goes:

    5. Assassin’s Creed – Yeah, yeah, time traveling and repetitive gameplay and North American accents – whatever, AC was a badass game that I’ve replayed about 3 times now at least because the assassinations make the flag running missions worth the pain. I’m psyched for AC2 to continue the fantastic storyline and expand the gameplay options.

4: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – CoD4’s story was one of the few believable modern-day war stories that didn’t delve into the controversy of actual current history TECHNICALLY, but it was pretty much how a war against an evil dictator in a Middle Eastern country and a brutal terrorist in Russia would go down. From the cargoship awesomeness to the nuke to walking in radiation with Micky-D, to the final moments of glory on the bridge, CoD4 was so intense and amazing that I’ve played it through several times, loving it each time. Plus, who doesn’t love Gaz?

    3. Pokemon Red/Blue – This was my first game and I’m STILL playing it. The fact that kids can get the game down to science and still have epic fun getting their Pokemon just the way they want them is a true testiment to perhaps the greatest RPG’s of all time. The number of Pokemon and their customization, and the story that engages the player even and especially if their a little kid is what makes the game so classic. Anyone who hasn’t played a Pokemon game is missing out on a staple of all games. The best games are the original Red, Blue, and Yellow, and Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Ruby and Sapphire were still pretty good, but since then, Pokemon sucks.

    2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – I got Lozoot for my birthday along with my new NINTENDO SIXTY-FOOOUUUR, and while Pokemon was good on my Gameboy, Lozoot blew it all away. It had a deep, epic storyline, amazingly good-looking 3D animation and graphics that I’m impressed by even today, and tight controls that didn’t make combat easy, but smooth so that you could take on tough enemies and not yell at clunky handling. I’ve played Lozoot so many times I lost count at around 7. Just last month, my brother came over from college and we played as much Lozoot as we could, and we both enjoyed just as much as we did the first time. It’s an incredible game that REALLY got me interested in video games, especially the Zelda games. I found myself having bought nearly all of the Zelda games out there, and I don’t consider myself a hardcore fan, but a fan nonetheless.

    1. Fallout 3 – You saw this coming, man. This is my favorite RPG of all time, hands down, simply because it’s incredible in every way. The post-nuclear landscape is gritty and colorless, but excuse me for forgetting the ponies and rainbows. The combat was surprisingly tight thanks to the VATS system that let me not worry about bad aiming and let me focus on geting headshots with my Terrible Shotgun. And most of all, the story is…ineffible. The immersion, the connection with all the characters, and the ability to lose yourself in the epic plot and environments and moments was uncanny. And you better believed I replayed Fallout 3. The Karma system gave me a sense of freedom that is unrivaled by any game in at least recent memory. Everything about Fallout 3 engaged me so much, it ruined my XBOX LIVE SOCIAL LIFE. Epic win, if you’re asking me. I still go back to Fallout 3 now and again to try a new character or just explore, and that says a lot about the replayability.

I’m very happy for you Lozoot, but I just wanna say that Fallout 3 is the greatest solo game of all time! Of all time!

  8. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic hands down. Its the best Star Wars game ever made and by far one of my favorite games ever made, but I haven’t played Uncharted 2 at all yet so it may change my mind.

Yay someone who loves Majoras Mask! Hi five! My favs are Majoras Mask and Bioshock. Maybe Risen can become one of them, its kinda very very awesome, hard and addicting.

  10. Half-Life 2
    Half-Life 2: Episode 2
    Fallout 3
    Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Star Wars Republic Commando (I just LOVED that game)

  11. Dark Messiah Might and Magic. Play it through 6-7 times finding new secrets each time. Shame I can’t play it anymore, it doesn’t like vista. :/
