The New PS3 Slim Does Everything

Is this “Sony does everything right month” or something? After a few years of bumps and bruises, the company that built the Playstation and Playstation 2, two of the greatest consoles of all time, finally seem to have gotten their act together. Not only have they dropped the PS3 to a nice and enticing $299 and have tons of awesome games on the horizon, but they’ve also released these terribly self-aware and hilarious ads about it. Nice to see that they can poke fun at themselves.

  1. But from what I know, the PS3 Slim isn’t backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games. That alone will turn away me from a buy. Most of the games I want to play are PS1 and PS2 games that I haven’t completed, and I don’t like playing the sequel to a game before finishing the original.

I understand why you are wanting backwards compatible ( ALL PS3s play PS1 games, BTW) but I hear so many people complain about this and I have to assume some of them have PS2s. Maybe I am wrong in that. Once I got a PS2, I never played any PS1 games on it, even though I wanted backwards compatiblity.

My own experience and research has shown that MOST (not all, but most) people don’t use the feature, even if they clamor for it. So Sony took it out, to lower the cost.

The PS2 is $99.99. If you want to play PS2 games, I guess that is an option. I still have my PS2, so I am not worried about it. But in your case I can see how that is annoying. Should have bought that PS2 a while ago, lol!

And this ad does crack me up.

  3. If only Sony knew that the UK & Ireland had these television things then maybe there would be advertisements over here! Microsft and Nintendo found us, we’re a few miles to the west of France you can’t miss us on a globe!

  4. I really don’t understand why people care about the backwards compatibility of the PS3 (or any other system for that matter).

The PS2 is one of the best selling systems in history. Is the complaint that you can’t throw it out yet or that you aren’t just getting one for free? Effectively giving away free systems that still sell well isn’t a good marketing strategy.

I highly doubt that anyone who says, “I’m not getting it ’cause it’s not BC.” is really swayed by that fact. My better judgment says that either they are MS fan-boys that wouldn’t buy it anyway and are just looking for more stones to throw or that they are folks who will break their ego-sore e-promise as soon as a proprietary game they want comes out.

More to the point, this commercial was pretty hilarious. I haven’t seen it on TV yet, though.

  5. I was at Best Buy earlier today, and I was completely tempted to pick one up, except I’d just spent $300 on a new pair of eyeglasses. Maybe next time.

  6. The only reason I would buy a PS3 would be for Ratchet and clank (I loved those games!) and Blu-Ray (But I would have to upgrade my tv too). Maybe for a few of the exclusives like LBP and infamous but it’s rarely worth a look for me if it doesn’t end up on the PC.

I was rather tempted by the PS3 slim when I saw a sale going on in my local store making it £175 (about $280) with an extra controller. But I was totally put off by the lack of PS2 playing, I am running out of room in my tv area and if I was to get a ps3 it would replace my ps2 in essence and in actual space/tv connections. I will probably just wait for further price drops on the original PS3 and grab it along with a new tv.

Indecently, thinking of reasons to get a PS3 made me think of reasons to get a 360 but I couldn’t think of one on the grounds that GOW2 eventually gets ported to the PC. So hah. Take that MS!

  7. One the debate of backwards compatibility:

Go on an epic road trip to find a 60gb refurbished in stores. My friend and I did just that and got one that it works perfectly, PLUS it’s only $330, and if you have an Edge Card and get 10% off…that’s the same price as a slim! I was lucky enough to receive the 60gb as a gift when it first came out- I love it.

    -Backwards Compatibility
    -Media Ports
    -4 USB

    60gb ftw

  8. My friend and I were thinking about saving up cash and picking up a couple.
Now, I’m no biggie when it comes to PS BC, because honestly, I don’t have many PS2 favorites besides GTA:SA, Battlefront games, and used to be Splinter Cell until I downloaded Chaos Theory onto the 360. And, my friend has his PS2 slim we still use.
All the PS3 is honestly good for nowadays truly is it’s exclusives, Blu-ray, and I believe free online play.
But honestly, I think I have everything I need: Extreme gaming PC, PS2, N64, Wii and 360.
So, I miss out on MGS, buuut I can still play (and own as) Snake in SSB:B!!!=D
