Rumor: Halo Movie Revived with Steven Spielberg?

spielbergWow. So there are rumors and there are rumors, and I’d say this one falls in the latter category. As many already know, the Halo movie that was in development hell for months and then killed was originally helmed by Peter Jackson as the Producer and Neil Blomkamp as the Director. Unfortunately, all negotiations were finally killed due to Blomkamp’s inexperience, and the two went on to make the cool-looking District 9.

However, a new name has been attached to the Halo movie: Steven Spielberg. That’s right, the maker of Indiana Jones, ET and Jurassic Park is apparently blown away by a Fall of Reach script that was written by Stuart Beattie last year, and some negotiations are rumored to be underway.

Personally, I’ve always thought that if a Halo movie ever did come to life, the Fall of Reach would be the perfect story to attach to it, as its much more interesting than anything the actual games had to offer. Like I said though, this is a rumor in every sense of the word, but next to Peter Jackson I couldn’t see someone better to tackle a Halo movie than Spielberg. What do you guys think of this?

  1. Well, i was reading my friends copy of Xbox magazine a while back, like a year ago, and apparently, the script was terrible and cheesy. Hopefully Spielberg can create something better, even though the last indiana jones was terrible.

  2. Hmmm…Master Chief in a fridge?

I personally don’t think that this will happen, mostly because of Halo: Reach.

Of course, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Halo movie helmed by Spielberg that covers another part of the timeline.

Oh get over it. The last Indy was better than most people say. it was as good as Temple of Doom.

  4. Couldn’t have said it better, Anthony. People just need to get over the whole fridge and alien stuff. It was a great movie even after accounting for those.

On topic, if this means there could be a movie, here’s hoping it’s good. Otherwise, I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t made.

  5. wow. YOU MADE MY F(can i say this?)ING MONTH!! (day seemed to short) i am unbelievably jacked to hear this as fall of reach would be so AMAZING!!! and would set up nicely for the trilogy of first strike and GoO. and i did like the last jones movie. temple of doom was worse in my opinion. but F(still not sure if i can say this)ING A!!!! haha thanks for the post.

  6. Are you kidding? The new jones movie was nowhere near as good as temple of doom. Anyway more on topic, I think a halo movie would be pretty cool. I’ve never been that into Halo, so even if they completly screw the storyline I’m sure I’ll still enjoy it.

  7. If Speilberg was at the helm, then it would be like Saving Private Ryan… IN SPACE! As a fan of the Halo mythology I do hope that if there is a movie, it keeps faithful to the Halo universe, unlike that anime.

  8. Bah, we don’t need a Halo movie. I never entirely understood the appeal of Halo, but didn’t it have something to do with shooting aliens in a game? Eh, I won’t hate. It has its audience, and heck, if it’s any good I’ll probably go see it too. If they think they can pull it off this time, more power to them.

  9. Everything you liked about the old Indy movies was in the new one. People just wanted to hate on it.

Producing a movie doesn’t impress me. Jurassic Park III, anyone?

Ok, you can’t hate on a guy’s resume because he produced a bad movie. It happens. He also produced Goonies, Monster House, Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, Munich, Catch me if you Can, Men in Black, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List, Gremlins, Back to the Future… So I’d say his track record speaks for itself. 🙂

  11. Well, I’d give something as important as Halo so either Jackson or Spielburg. So I say this could be good. Although, that little mini-film, Landfall, I think Blomkamp was involved in that one and I wasn’t too sure about if I liked that….

He directed some of those, but the JP III started shooting without a finished script. That will forever remain a blemish to me.

The point I was trying to make is simply producing something doesn’t promise quality. It has a better chance with him producing than if it were Uwe Boll, but I would be happier if he were directing it.

  13. This could be very epic.

Thing is this. I personally HATE the fact they were going to do it with Live Action + CGI (which in my opinion looked like CRAP) If you remember the Halo LANDFALL video which had the ODST retrieving some sensor to track MCs drop pod you may remember h ow crappy (or good depending on how you see it) the CGI and the movie could have looked. I personally thought it looked pretty shit. Looking at the brutes that the ODST fought…they fely out of place. The level of CGI they were using sucked! They would have been better using CGI/puppets or something. The aliens in the Alien series looked better. Now granted it was early on looks at what the movie could have been, I was disappointed. While it was cool, if the entire movie had been that way. I think I would have NOT seen it.

A big name like Spielburg could bring in funding to help make this thing amazing. If he sticks to the script and also follows more of the book series, the movie could turn out to be super awesome!

  14. so its a book to a movie
im guessing they are based on a game i mean iv never played the halo games properly but i think i know how the second one ends
but if its a game to a book to a movie i would say its too diluted but if they can pull of a book to movie better then lotr they have reached highest action book to movie mark

  15. Yes! I loved Fall of Reach – probably my favorite of the Halo books – and making it a movie would be perfect! I’m glad Spielberg will be working on it.

  16. @Sean: In reality, it was just fine, you just seem extremely picky about CGI. Landfall was actually a pretty good little piece, and though, yes, it could have looked better, it was nowhere near “sucky” level.

  17. Uh…landfall was simply a test, remember? Don’t you think it would have been better in the actual movie?

This is why the internet sucks.

I dont remember ever hearing landfall being a test. All I remember hearing was budgeting was bad, and that was all they provided as a glimpse. It was total garbage, there were good things in it. But it really had me worried the movie would suck.

Haha the internet can just be miss-informative.

The video is intended primarily as an experiment to test Halo’s real-world media potential as well as advertise for Halo 3.

If you don’t think they would have upped the budget for the actual movie, you are nuts.

It was likely that type of reaction that led them to cancel the movie.
