GamerSushi Asks: Day One Purchasing?

uncharted2One of the more interesting parts of each fall and winter is the decision about which games are worthy of purchase, and which are more up the rental alley. And let’s be honest, there’s nothing quite like the anticipation that leads up to a release of a game that you’ve been dying for. Whether I’m attending a midnight release (which doesn’t happen so often these days), picking up a game during lunch or after work, I love the build up before a new video game.

I remember one of the best day one purchases I made was Grand Theft Auto III. I had read some good reviews leading up to its release, and it sounded like something that I’d be really interested in checking out. I remember going to get it on a rainy day after class and picking it up on a whim. Having never really heard of the game, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I bought it. What I got was a game like I had never experienced before. The snarky radio ads, the open world, the ability to do whatever I wanted. It really was remarkable, and made itself into a memorable release.

In terms of games that I’m excited about for the Fall/Winter, I think I’ve narrowed it down to a fairly reasonable list. The funny thing is, I narrow it down to the games that I would like to buy on their release days, but eventually I have to cut that list down even more to get some games that I actually can buy. Being a married dude such as myself, I can’t just spend as much money as I want without earning myself a night on the futon.

odstSo far, I think the games I’m for sure going to buy on the day they come out will be Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, Halo: ODST and Dragon Age: Origins. Some runners up are Assassin’s Creed 2, Forza 3 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. Now, that list will probably change quite a bit by the time the next few months rolls around, but right now that’s what I’ve got it at. To be honest, last-minute reviews will probably factor into it a lot.

What about you guys? What qualities have to be in a game to make you excited about buying right when it comes out, as opposed to finding it used or waiting for Christmas? Is it replayability, multiplayer, good reviews, etc? And what games coming out in the next few months are you going to get right away? Go!

  1. For me, it’s typically either critical multipliayer titles or those with strong franchise/series/developer cred. Hence, Modern Warfare 2 and ODST top my list at the moment, though Dragon Age could potentially sneak in there…

  2. 1. Modern f##king Warfare 2!
    2. Uncharted 2
    3. Halo 3: ODST
    4. Red Dead Redemption
    5. Assassin’s Creed 2 (hopefully doesn’t suck)

Expect 80% of game time during the holidays to be spent on MW2.

  3. Modern warfare 2
    Bad company 2
    Uncharted 2
    Assassin Creed 2
Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time
    Brütal Legend

One of those, and rest of them later for Xmas, or after.

  4. Scribblenauts and Brutal Legend, and that’s it. Scribblenauts because it looks awesome in every way, and Brutal Legend because after playing some Psychonauts, I’m itching for another Tim Schafer game.

  5. 1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Hopefully Hardened edition so I can get a Call of Duty: Classic Code)
    2. Forza 3
    3. Bad Company 2

  6. As you may remember, I have a huge list of games to play. I will only buy one game before Xmas and it will be Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 or Modern Warfare 2.

  7. 1. Halo 3 ODST. That game looks so good.
    2. Modern Warfare 2. I don’t think I can resist.
    3. Batman: Arkham Asylum.
    4. Assassin’s Creed 2.
    5. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2.

  8. The best game that blew my mind when I bought it even though I wasn’t super-hyped before the release was CoD4. I wasn’t the biggest CoD fan before CoD4, and that game changed me drastically. It pushed aside Halo 3 violently and dominated my life. When WaW came out, I was psyched, then disappointed, and now I like WaW again for the Nazi Zombies (can’t wait for Der Riese!).
As for this year, that’s easy:

    1. Modern Warfare 2: I will get and omgasm over MW2 the day it comes out and will probably be playing it excitedly for over a year.
    2. Assassin’s Creed 2: I got the first AC and CoD4 in one purchase, so getting MW2 and AC2 will be nostalgic. I was sort of not really hyped for the original games, but the sequels I can’t wait for. AC2 will be better than AC1, and considering I loved AC1, AC2 will probably be my favorite adventure game right under Lozoot.
    3. Bad Company 2: Looks awesome. I loved BFBC1, another game I happened to fall in love with after the release, so BFBC2 will be a grand improvement over a great game.
    4. Halo 3: ODST: I loved Halo 3’s Campaign, so adding a totally new perspective to it PLUS Firefight mode PLUS the Halo Reach beta will make it a $60 well spent. Seriously, that’s like a Special Edition package for just $60. Good deal.

Anything else that looks cool is coming in ‘010, so looks like it’s just 4 awesome games. Well, I’m happy.

  9. Definitely ModernWarfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2. But I’m still really holding out and saving some money for games like Alan Wake and Max Payne 3. I don’t make as much money in Winter so it’s not easy to justify $60 games on release.

  10. 1. Modern Warfare 2
    2. Dragon Age: Origins
    3. Left 4 Dead 2

I’ve been following the Call Of Duty Series since the first one and I dont plan to stop now. But now I consider only games made by Infinity Ward to be actual Call of Duty games. Treyarch needs to find their own title.

I loved Buldars gate and now that Dragon Age: Origins is coming out, its impossible to resist.

Im still considering Left 4 Dead 2. Reviews will make or break me on that deal.

  11. Well, I’m on a really tight budget. So, I can only get 1 games this year… MODERN WARFARE 2 TOPS THEM ALL FOR ME! The graphics looked like they improved and the multiplayer is going to be great especially with the cool new arsenal to your disposel. I bet when I get the game and just pop that mother****er into my PS3, it will blow up due to to much awesomeness!!!

But… If I did have the money my list would be like this:

    1.Modern Warfare 2(**** YEA!)
    2.Battlefield Bad Co. 2
3.Uncharted 2(Never played the first one but looks like a promising game)

  12. The only one I’ll get at launch is MW2 but that’s so that I’ll have it for sure. I’m saving it for Christmas. Although, if I can, I’ll get Uncharted 2. I like Anthony, have a bit of a back catalogue. Having said this I will probably get one or two if I fall to temptation! 🙂

  13. In the past I try to get Portal on day one when it was out, but… my old pc couldn’t play the thing. Sooo, that really doesn’t count :/

But in the future, I would like to get Half life 2: episode 3, and also look out for ODST. (Hope they bring it to PC for a change… it is from Microsoft after all…)

  14. I’ve been spending all my money on trying to get an Xbox 360 so far, so I’m probably only going to buy two games this year.

The first, of course, being Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition.

The second is BioShock 2, which I’m surprised no one has said anything about…

  15. Hmmm…. on our small child budget, I’m buying MW 2 collectors, and my Brothers are buying ODST.

  16. 5. I forgot Left 4 Dead 2, or as I’ve taken to calling it, Left 4 Deader. (It’s from the Angry Joe Show if you must know.) Anyway, the new features make El Forty-Two look like it’s gonna be worth trading-in L4D1 for the sequel.
