Today’s WTF: No LAN For StarCraft II

sc2Blizzard, Blizzard. You seem so content to make it into the WTF parties these days. While lately I’ve been upset with the amount of whining and fussing that gamers tend to go on and on about, I can’t help but sympathize a little on this one.

As of right now, it seems that there is no planned LAN support for StarCraft II, the long-awaited sequel to one of the greatest RTS games of all freaking time. I find this to be a little curious, especially seeing as how nearly every LAN party I’ve ever seen or heard of has some folks ready to drop in on some StarCraft-ing action. To me, this reads like a calculated move to force users onto Battle.net, which reportedly might come with a fee this time around.

LAN support seems like a no-brainer to me, especially on a multiplayer game like this. Looks like you’ll have to alter the game just to play at a LAN party. Bad move, Blizzard. You continue to develop the perception that you like to throw your fans under your collective bus.

So what do you guys think? Is this WTF worthy?

  1. Lemme throw this out there. I hate RTS games, and can’t stand the starcraft/warcraft crap but… If this is true, it is easily one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard about a game.

    shidiots.

  2. Man, between removing all these features and splitting the game into three parts, you’d assume that it would be out a bit sooner.

In all seriousness, Eddy, you took the words right out my mouth (fingers?). This seems like a move to push Battle.Net into greater prominence. If they want to do that, they’ll need to figure out a way to make it more secure. There’s still a problem where people can access your hard-drive during a StarCraft match.

  3. Absolute WTF material. Blizzard would have to be mental not to include LAN support, for a few reasons:
    1) Gamers tend to expect they can play multiplayer games over a LAN
    2) There are a number of gamers out there who have the technical know-how to make such a mode available without Blizzard’s permission
    3) Blizzard is going to take a bashing in the gaming press for this, as well as among their fans.

So yeah, I’m doubtful, since doing something like removing LAN support is tantamount to shooting themselves in both feet, and one wrist. Sure hope this is just an unfounded rumor, otherwise I’m not throwing my hard-earned cash down for this game.

  4. gg, Blizzard, no rm.
Seriously, though, no LAN? Tell me this is rumor! Whether or not I would get this game was already in question, but not being able to play online without battlenet? It just seems…what’s the word…like a big middle finger to us, the gamers.

    …Another one.

  5. I really doubt that Blizzard would do something like that. If you keep watch over the SC2 forums they seem like they want to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Also I’m pretty sure that the rumor about having to pay for battle.net was squashed over there too.

  6. WHAT THE FLYING PENIS, BLIZZARD?!
Seriously, even if their CEO suffered mental retardation, he wouldn’t do this.
I mean…there’s literally no way to justify Blizzard’s recent completely insane decisions other than with conspiracy theories!

  7. that’s friggin stupid…why are there only a handful of honest developers who want to make a game for people to enjoy, not just to whore money off of…It’s so sad- just let us play the freakin’ game how we want to..

  8. IF they do that. I hope every Starcraft fan DOESNT pay for Bnet. I hope they find a way to get around it and do it CONSTANTLY. Screw them for doing that, thats awful. If WoW wasnt making them enough already, they want more, only to sit on it and take their time in making new games. Its total crap.

  9. The South Koreans will riot in the streets. No LAN for one of their national sports? D= Anarchy.

Actually, they’ll be rioting on battlenet. Blizzard knows their demographic. At this point, if you’re going to buy the game, that’s that. My prediction? $40 LAN DLC after the third installment releases.

  11. iv played warcraft 3 (not starcraft) and can honestly say battlenet being free and easy to use wan probably the best part of the game which made it 10 times better then any age of game

but paying for it? seriously they make atleast £100 mill a month from wow as if that wasnt a rip off enough

  12. They must thinnk that by taking away the LAN, Game Servers that use that for free online play, like Garena will not be able to use this, so they have to buy the game.
Thats just ****ng stupid, well put Coassak, “WHAT THE FLYING PENIS”.

Because yea, the Garena tornaments are way more well known as well, so this is gonna disrupt a whole lotta people. Blizzard, Build Spirit Towers (I havnt playd starcraft, so watsa defensive building xD)
