Sony E3 Presentation Highlights

playstationAfter Microsoft’s Shock and Awe campaign yesterday, I think we were all anxious to see if Sony would even show up for their 2-hour presentation today. Here are the highlights:

  • Sony dude Jack Tretton opened with a joke about how nobody in the industry can keep secrets, a total reference to the leak of the PSP Go from the other day. I think it’s pretty classy that they can make fun of themselves like that.
  • 364 new games coming to Sony systems this year, 35 of which are exclusive. Considering the dearth of PS3 games for a while, this is welcome news.
  • Uncharted 2 Multiplayer beta goes live tonight. Single-player looks very impressive. Really seem to have meshed the shooting and platforming elements. Also, the graphics are incredible.
  • Gameplay footage of MAG. 256 players in one battle. For so many players, it looked kind of lonely. Would have liked to have seen more action.
  • Hannah Montana lilac colored PSP announcement for this Fall is met with cheers. I don’t know if that’s funny or scary.
  • PSP Go! announced officially. Will not replace UMD or other PSPs. 16MB of memory. Can download from PSN with built in Wi-Fi. 50% smaller and 40% lighter than original PSP. The price will be $249.99, available on 10/01/09. Too rich for my blood.
  • Gran Turismo for the PSP. Over 800 cars and 35 tracks. You can trade cars with your friends. Cool, but where is the PS3 version???
  • Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker for the PSP. Kojima announced it himself. Set in the Seventies, 10 years after MGS 3. Might show the origin of Outer Heaven. Looks like a full on MGS game, with the possibility of 4 player co-op in the form of Snake clones.
  • New Resident Evil for the PSP. Also, LittleBigPlanet, Monster Hunter, Motorstorm, Soul Caliber, Fat Princess, Guitar Hero and Star Wars: Battlefront.
  • Final Fantasy VII on PSN TODAY! Also, over 50 PS1 classics by the end of the year.
  • More content coming to Home. Meh.
  • Video of various games, including DC Universe Online, an MMO and also a PS3 exclusive.
  • Rockstar PS3 exclusive: Agent. Spies and assassins in the late 1970s. They claim this will have the same must-have value that GTA did. No footage shown.
  • Assassin’s Creed 2 footage. Looks pretty cool, might have solved the problems of the first game. Out before Christmas along with the PSP version. PS3 version will have 6 exclusive weapons.
  • More Final Fantasy XIII footage. Gorgeous, just like you would expect.
  • Final Fantasy 14 in 2010 for PS3 ONLY! It’s an online game! Awesome footage! This is the megaton announcement!
  • Motion control time: True 1:1 tracking. All of it was a tech demo, looks cool. Coming in 2010.
  • LittleBigPlanet is getting Disney themes. That is kinda awesome.
  • Mod Nation Racers announced. Part of the Play Create Share theme that Nintendo ripped off earlier. Drivers can be customized like in LittleBigPlanet. Think Mario Kart meets Sackboy. Custom tracks! That is pretty neat. Better than making Wario Ware games! The track builder seems easy to use as well, they built one on stage in just a few minutes.
  • The new Team Ico game is called The Last Guardian. The trailer from last week was indeed leaked, but it doesn’t change that this game looks incredible. Interestingly enough, the leaked footage is about a year old apparently, and this stuff looks way better.
  • God of War 3 will be the last game in the series, and it’s going to have some crazy brutal quick time kills. The ones on the centaur and the chimera are stinking insane. Creatures are going to get owned, for sure. The game drops March 2010.

Overall, a pretty solid showing with really no wtf moments to speak of. Not a whole lot of new stuff coming, but when you have this many exclusives coming over the next year, why do you need to drop a lot of new information?

What do you guys think? What’s the most exciting piece of Sony news?

  1. That FF 14 announcment had me jumping up and down! What a coup for Sony. It didn’t look like an MMO either. Maybe Phantasy Star Online type gameplay???

  2. Not a bad showing from Sony. I was kind of hoping for something a little bigger than FF XIV (an online entry no less) in the same year as the massively delayed FF XIII, but I won’t complain about new FF games, really. Still though, I wish they’d stop naming the online versions as part of the franchise and just call them FF Online or something.

MAG wasn’t that impressive at all, really, though I’m still mildly interested. I just don’t see why anyone would play it with options like Modern Warfare 2 on the horizon.

Uncharted 2 looks stunning. Seriously, along with Mass Effect 2, it’s at the top of my most anticipated list.

While I think the PSP connectivity is one of their strongest features, the PSP as a system is not. While a PSP Metal Gear game is cool, I’d prefer a PS3 one.

  3. I got my wish in the form of the Assassin’s Creed II demo. Pretty sweet, they really nailed the feeling of the first game, but to a greater extent. Altair writ large, as it were. I’m not sure about Da Vinci playing a “Q” role, but we’ll have to see.

A pretty impressive showing for Sony, even if the entire thing was punctuated with really long video montages. I wish they had announced more content for inFamous…I love that game.

  4. In my point of view, Sony’s conference deffinatly blew nintendo out the way (I thought Nintendo’s was quite shockingly bad tbh lol… OMG NEW MARIO. OMG NEW MARIO.” I don’t quite get when they will give up with Mario. Also that weird thing something like vitality :X?

for Microsoft, I have to admit… Their conference WAS good and even I was thinking sony wasn’t going to pull anything out their bag and own everyone with awesomeness (yeah.). Even the comments (probably from xbox fanboys) had me agreeing that Microsoft had “won”.

However, for me (I’m not a ps3 fanboy, I’ve only played on my brothers PS3 once <. Microsoft -> Nintendo

  5. Good job sony!

Not quite as “big” as Microsoft, but very solid.

    GoWIII looks sick.

Uncharted 2 is in my Top 5 most anticipated games of the year.

Going to download FF7 on PSN very soon.

    MGS hopefully soon?

We all know Team Ico will knock it out of the park.

  6. Uncharted 2 might be awesome. I’m keeping my ears peeled.

The Last Guardian looks incredible. I mean, it’s by Team Ico. Nuff sedd.

MAG might lack graphics, but hopefully they’ll make the large lobby thing more than just a gimmick for another Team Deathmatch FPS. I’m confident Zipper knows what they’re doing.

    Maybe I’ll finally get a PS3…

  7. Sony did good this year. Uncharted looks great, as well as god of war. And it’s great to hear about the new Final Fantasy games.

The only thing is (and this is just me), many of these announcements seem more like a “Let’s use nintendo’s game against them.” situation. The sony motion control seems like a slightly upgraded wiimote to me (not trying to be a fanboy, it’s just that I though microsoft’s answer to the problem seems more original to me, and sony’s controler seems to be more of a gimmic).

And it’s the same plan with the PSP. That’s why we’re getting quickly produced handheld sequels to the PSP of many of these big franchises. (I only say this because of LBP being added to the large group.)

I dunno, I thought they did a good job, but it seemed more like sony trying to beat nintendo at their own game strategy. Microsoft’s conference was not only exiciting to me, but a little more… original.

But not bad Sony, not bad.

  8. Im still confused as to whether or not Metal Gear Solid Rising is multi-platform, nobody has confirmed it as xbox exclusive yet. anybody got any info on that?

Mod nation racers seems like a rectum-kicking party game, cannot wait for the good times to ensue.

Had a look at the magic wand thing for the eyetoy majig. This is more then the wii ever was, if applied correctly to various games (carrying a torch down a dark hallway full of anything about to pop out and eat your face springs to mind instantly) it could be a good idea, im just hoping to chuck norris himself that it isnt a tool for an endless parade of shovelware not worth my time.

Sweet Moses FF14. 2 things. 1. will it release before 13? because that would be endless hilariouscism. and 2. im hoping that you just have to pay for the game, but not week/monthly fees, but im not keeping my hopes too high.

I have to say that while microsoft took the hardware cake this time around (natal looks…..interesting, will have to see how that will play out), Sony takes the software pie. And nintendo….gets the “Most Improved” cupcake.

  9. PSP Go! announced officially. Will not replace UMD or other PSPs. 16MB of memory. Can download from PSN with built in Wi-Fi. 50% smaller and 40% lighter than original PSP. The price will be $249.99, available on 10/01/09. Too rich for my blood.

Isn’t it 16 gigabytes rather than mb ?

  10. 🙁 I want the 6 exclusive PS3 weapons for Assassins Creed but I don’t have a PS3.
