Left 4 Dead 2 E3 Gameplay

In a surprising move, Valve announced the sequel to last year’s much-loved zombie shoot-em-up Left 4 Dead. Even though not much time has passed, Left 4 Dead 2 will come out this November. To be honest, while I love the first game, I’m not really sure how I feel about this. Valve is usually the kind of company that supports their games with years of free content (see Team Fortress 2), so this seems like a weird move coming from them. Regardless, the gameplay looks fun as ever, even if it is the same kind of stuff.

Anywho, enjoy this clip of off-camera gameplay from E3. What do you guys think? Fair/foul of Valve?

  1. I feel that it’s too early. EVERYBODY feels it’s too early. Have you seen the forums? It’s jam packed with hate in every single thread.

Some reasons why people hate it:
-Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
-Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
-The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
-The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
-The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
-L4D2 is too colourful to fit in with L4D1’s visual aesthetic
-The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
-L4D2’s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
-The community has lost faith in Valve’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release

I agree with all of the above reasons except bout the colorfullness… RE5 took place in the sun, not many complained bout that.

One more thing: WHERE THE HELL IS HL2:EP3?!?!?!?!?!

  2. Yeah the point about fracturing the community is probably the best one on that list. Left 4 Dead is a game with some major legs, so fracturing a community between L4D and L4D 2 people seems like it could significantly hurt both games.

Will I still buy it, though? Perhaps. I just don’t know if I feel the need to just yet.

  3. Meh, I said before that Valve should have just done a big DLC update thing where they add more characters, maps, and weapons. It would be doable, and even if I had to pay $10 or even $20 I wouldn’t really mind if there was enough content in it.
Oh well. It better be worth it, Valve.

  4. Foul foul foul!

Same game is the same. all they should of done is updated the original so that i might actually shell out money, cause it was the next game i was going to buy but no cause they have to release number 2 already.
I agree with wargeragon about Ep. 3 where’s it? probably been scrapped to make left 4 dead 2

  5. I’ve just recently gotten this game, and while I think it’s amazing, I agree a sequel isn’t the right call yet. It’s just too soon.

Besides, a sequel coming out this early? As awesome as the chainsaws look, jumping the gun on a sequel may not do so well for the game.

  6. I doubt that the content will be un-polished; after all, Left 4 Dead was delayed how many times?

Anyways, I don’t really see the necessity of a full fledged sequel. Left 4 Dead: Ragin’ Cajun expansion pack would have been just fine. The one thing I like about this iteration is that they’re telling a consistent story with the four new survivors (who, I agree, don’t look all that interesting).

Also, the design for the Charger is incredibly stupid. Angry hillbilly? Squeal like a Hunter for me, boy!

  7. I only played the L4D demo, and it was fun, it just wasn’t in the cards for me to buy it though. I think this almost exactly the same as L4D just new enviroment and weapon skins, horrible move on Valve’s part imo.

  8. Well, whether I’ll buy it or not depends on the price point, the extra features, and how well the new special infected and melee system play. It definitely won’t be a day 1 purchase. And… I really hope those aren’t the final characters. The only zombie game fluorescent yellow belongs in is Dead Rising 2. And I agree. I’d much rather see HL2:Ep3 than L4D2.

  9. This is a close enough (both in distance and similarity) to the first game to be a patch.

Why not just call it “Left 4 Dead: Episode 2”?

    (Just don’t expect to see a L4D Ep3 in another 6 years)… Speaking of which… >:C

  10. I jumped on the hate train as soon as I saw the trailer, and I will ride into the very pits of hell.

Seeing this footage only made things worse. Personally, I feel betrayed and let down. I would have loved to see more campaigns or even the character evolution of the four we know and love (Zoey, Francis, Bill, and Louis), but instead it looks like someone has gutted L4D, pulled out its organs, slapped them onto a new pallet, pulled in some new effects, and then stood back from the gory creation and said; “See!? Good as new!”
I felt sorry for the Tank and Hunter it looked so bad.
Do I think the charger is a good addition? No – I would rather have seen zombie dogs as DLC for the true L4D. Do these characters make me want to follow them through the zombie apocalypse? No – why would I want to hang around with a Rich Prick, a Street Brat, a Sweaty Highschool Gym Teacher, and a Country Yokle who can’t string two line together? I think I’ll stick with the inspirational characters, thank you. Do the new weapons make a difference? Okay, so they look cool – so-freakin-what? L4D was great in that it had balance, and no one weapon clearly outshone the the others. Why bring in more guns?

In sum, I will not be buying this game, and I feel that its release is little more than a sellout cashgrab that has severly maimed my faith in Valve.

  11. I really dont like the voice acting, they all sound lame and I miss the old guys.

  12. Valve does something very out of character here…wonder why? Could Microsoft be influencing them perhaps??

Come to the PS3, Valve! We’ll treat you nice!

  13. Wait a minute… Omg, the SPAS’s animations are the same as the auto shotty’s! You can see when he pulls out the gun, he does the stock extending animation! The hell? Same special infected models too? VALVe? These had better be place holders…

ATM, it looks like a re-skin on a user created map…

I’m a bit more cautious now then I was before. This might just turn out to be a major foul…

Unless it turns out that this will actually be DLC instead of a full retail game. That would both be surprising and relieving.

    We’ll see, I suppose.

Ya, I bet those are place holders. Remember what happened to the skins of the 4 characters in l4d1?
