GamerSushi Asks: What Are Your Gaming Quirks?

monk173dqGame time. I turn on the PS3, go to the bathroom and wash my hands. I hate sticky controllers and my hands get sweaty when I find myself in a vicious cock fight with the Helghast of Killzone 2. I sit on the bed, make sure my cell phone and the TV remote are in front of me, slightly to the left and if my controller is charging, I make sure the wire is not snagged on anything in case I have to make a sudden move. I sit Indian-style on my bed, never laying down because this is no time to relax. I check my message box and then sign off. I don’t need to be bothered during killing time with invites.

My laser-like focus will not be moved.

So, as you can see from reading the above, I am a little quirky when it comes to playing games. I am pretty set in my ways and I like things the way I like them, even outside of games. You should see my organizing system for my books! So what quirks do you guys exhibit when you play games?

  1. I always make sure and have something to drink with me, and I never really lay down to play either. I also immediately appear offline when I get on XBox Live so as not to be distracted by a flurry of invites.

  2. The only thing I can think of is that I always make sure that I got something to drink with me, so I dont have to get off… I also always eat my meals while playing. I only get off to start making food, and finishing it. I also tend to play FPSs while eating… not sure why though

  3. My ritual: My PS3 is in the living room (big TV!). I get to the swivel chair, set the sky remote on the floor, TV remote on the left arm, phone on the right. I move my feet under the chair to pull the foot-rest out and at the same time I’ll be adjusting the back of the chair to a suitable height. Finally (assuming I intend to play online) I’ll be turning on my shitty Motorolla headset and checking that it’s connected to the console. I have 2 SIXAXIS’s (SIXAXI?) so no worries for charging.

  4. Im pretty annoying when it comes to volume, one time the volume on my tv was set to 12 and it was too quiet so I bumped it to 13 then didnt want to stay on 13 because Im a little superstitious so I went up to 14 and it was too loud. That was quiet a predicament. I cant play laying down either. A stranger thing Ive found myself doing is that I cant play with my shoes on… personally I dont really care but I find myself kicking them off without realizing. Theres an autographed poster on my wall from Peter Cullen, Optimus Prime voice actor,(Please dont ask lol) and the tape is beginning to lose its stickiness… so all 4 corners must be straight before I get in the zone

  5. Whenever I play games on my PC, for some reason I have the volume at the exact same level, every time I play. It helps to determine how far away something is, though.

  6. I can’t play with sweaters/jackets on. T’s only. And the chair can’t have arm rests, i like my elbows hanging. Also cant play lying down.

My CS config file is highly modified, and I have it set so that when I strafe left, my gun goes left handed, and vice versa. It doesnt actualy change a thing, but it makes it feel like when im coming around a corner, the gun goes around the corner first.

I also drink when I play, and I use an actual studio recording microphone for my play, so Im constantly adjusting its height on the boom so that its in the exact same position after speaking…

I also always close the door, if its even a hair open, i cant stop looking at it.

(unfortunately, i do have a bit of OCD in other things, i.e. I count stairs when I go down, but not up…)

  7. I don’t have many quirks related to gaming. I suppose having my subwoofer pulled out a little bit so I can use it as a footrest and feel the vibrations is one though, lol.

  8. All right, my quirks are with FPS games and Sim games.

    FPS Games:

My ammo I have left must be divisible by the maximum ammo capacity of my clip. Ex. I have a gun with a 30-round clip, I can have as may bullets as I want, as long as the munber is divisible by 30.

Also, for some reason I am only truly happy when using a single-shot gun, but not a bolt-action. So something with a semi-automatic fire mode is most likely my gun of choice. Unfortunately that means my friends always ask why I don’t use T3h Ubar l33t gun.

Finally, I usually (but have recently stopped) wear a pair of thin black gloves when I play FPS games. I just don’t like a sticky/sweaty controller.

    Sim Games:

If I play FSX my flights have to, absolutely HAVE to fly in real time.

Also, with FSX I need to go through all the proper pre-flight procedures before taking off, or even beginning my taxi.

I also play Silent Hunter 4 and I know that Trig is a important thing for determining firing solutions and the like, so what I try to do is use my knowledge of Trig to do the required math myself, although I do use auto-targeting cuz I don’t want to screw up. Been trying to use it to plot intercept courses but I’m not too sure how to do that…

So yeah, that’s me and all my quirkiness.

same here boom mic and all. I also can’t have shoes on while I play

  10. If I am playing soul calibur 4 I have to take off my class ring, if i’m playing halo, or cod, then I have to put it on. I always have to sit forward, and if its an intense game I will start to bite my lip. Oh and I always have to have music on, Metallica, Rage against the machine, Soil, Breaking Benjamin, I need something to push me farther into victory!

  11. I dunno. I have to keep remote and phone close, but thats about it.

IN GAME quirks, I have this nasty habit of reloading all the time. Chris, you remember him Eddy, Asian guy, got most of our halo group in the mindset of always reloading. Its so bad XD Thank goodness for bullet carry-over.

Also in CSS the constant switching of guns. Lord.

I thought I was the only one who did that! I have no idea why and it never bothers me in a gun where bullets (or whatever alternative) are loaded singly, ie. In a shotgun I don’t mind when one is loaded at a time or a bolt-action sniper rifle in COD4, or a rocket launcher where the rockets are loaded individually. WTF? Right?

EXACTLY! It just gets so annoying I gotta fix it. Even if it means wasting bullets!

Heh, same. Sometimes out of laziness I don’t even hit the reload button but just waste the rest of the clip (usually with 5-10 left mebbe). In most cases it’s just to see the cocking animation which should only happen after the entire clip is spent. Resi 5 I’m looking at your innacuracies!

  15. Ever game is like a little camping trip, haha. I make sure I have the phone, some drinks and foods, a little toy a play with in loading times (lol). Oh and some work I have to get done. I don’t want to forget the truth 😛

  16. When I play on my PS3, I almost always sit on my knees,on the floor, thats when I play FPS’s the best, I don’t know why. Also, I either obsessively reload or never manually reload. Then, whenever I use an XBox controller, I keep my left index finger on the trigger most of the time.

  17. I also reload excessively. So much so that almost after every kill in CS, I reload.. It gets me killed quite often, but I can’t stand the thought of going around a corner without having a full clip; its a lose-lose habbit.

  18. Dang… well its glad to know I am not alone.
I HAVE to play my games by myself in my room, UNLESS it is a FPS game, then my friend can play with me but I end up talking to them more than playing. I cant play with shoes on, they just distract me. Also I keep the lights on, I just cant play in the dark IDK i just cant.
And like Julez I reload A LOT like after every kill. To many times in the beginning would I find myself with no ammo and get killed. Now I die in mid reload…

I do the same thing. If I have like 5 bullets left I just waste them to see the full reload action.
And sorry for all the consecutive posts…
