Wii Fit Passes Halo 3 Sales in US

wii-fitYikes. If there’s one game that you just assume that everyone and their mom owns, it’s probably Halo 3. Well, at least that’s what I assume anyway. Not so, though, if the latest sales numbers are to be believed.

After less than a year since its release, Wii Fit has surpassed Halo 3 in sales in the U.S. Last month, the official number for Wii Fit rose above the 6 million mark, while Halo 3 has sold about 5.9 million since its release in September of 2007.

So, is this yet another sign of the apocalypse? Personally, I didn’t realize that they had been able to keep Wii Fit in stock enough in order to sell this many of them.

  1. Like you said Eddy, I’m surprised the stock levels were able to cope with this! And that’s just the US. What’s it like worldwide? Well at least it shows that gaming will help us get out of this global economic crisis.

  2. Dang…and Halo 3 has been out longer too. Still, I don’t think we can safely call it a sign of the apocalypse per se until it passes, I dunno, Wii sports. Kind of sad that the benchmark for one of Nintendo’s gimmicks is, you guessed it, another one of their gimmicks. Really, though, these numbers don’t really alarm me. I mean, considering its market, Wii Fit appeals to everybody who wants to pretend that they’re losing weight, or who’s insecure enough to need to be told they’re not overweight. Halo 3 appeals to shooter fans…and it doesn’t even cover the whole shooter market. And hey, Nintendo has had its fair share of failures…see Wii Music.

  3. Unsatisfactory *facepalm*

The apocalypse begins when we read “NINTENDO WII BUYS GOOGLE” on the headlines of the paper…

  4. So this is what they were planning during all that downtime with the Gamecube… I knew it was a trap, better start on my bomb shelter

  5. GET IN YOUR SHELTERS. don’t forget to bring your favorite game systems before they are polluted. Soon Nintendo will buy Halo 3 and make Halo 4: Animal crossing

Indeed. Sigh, where did we go wrong Nintendo..? What did I do to you for this relationship to go so horribly down hill..? *Sheds a tear for gaming as we KNEW it*

  7. Nintendo Wii sales don’t count anymore, for crying out loud. People who play games once in a very long while aren’t truly gamers; it’s like calling a kid who is forced to play basketball each year in gym class a basketball player. He’s so casual, it doesn’t register.
Anyway, Wii Fit is basically the new Wii Sports. You can pretty much replace the Wii Sports sales with the Wii Console sales since Wii Sports comes with it. You can’t say the same about Halo 3. I bet half of Xbox owners don’t have Halo 3, and probably never will.

  10. I’m not surprised that Wii Fit is so popular. I think the idea that you can play video games and get exercise at the same time is intriguing to most people.
