How Diablo is Diablo III?

diablo3Next to The Old Republic MMO, Diablo III is pretty much one of the only PC games that I’m really dying to get my hands on these days. I loved Diablo II, and playing co-op accounts for some of my favorite gaming moments.

As with many sequels, change has apparently come to the Diablo franchise, and many fans have voiced their unhappiness at the change in art style from the dark and gritty to the vibrant and colorful nature seen in WoW. Personally, I don’t really care that much, because the game will still be a blast to play.

But who cares what I think, since I’m not Bill Roper, one of the original bigwigs behind the Diablo series. And his opinion? He preferred the dark and gritty style better, but sees why Blizzard would go the way they did. Check out the quote after the jump.

I think that one of the things that we always tried to get across was that Diablo was Gothic fantasy and I think there was just a need that was put in there from the visuals that I didn’t necessarily get. I got it from the architecture and to a degree from the character design but not the feeling of the world. I can’t say that I dislike it. I didn’t look at it and go, oh my God that’s horrible. But I looked at it and went, it’s not really… to me as a player it just didn’t really ring with Diablo.

Not very Diablo, he says. So, what do you guys say? Are you fans of the Diablo III art style, and do you think the new direction could detract from the game at all? Go!

  1. Well, I have to agree the whole dark, grim and gritty just says Diablo. This new direction, though, will be a welcome change to the franchise, at least the casual and new gamers wont notice it. The die-hard veterans might dislike it, but if you dont get a game just because its to bright, I think thats just sad.

  2.
I say give it a chance. We all know that graphics were not the reason we stayed up til 5 in the morning play Diablo II.
Amen.

The graphics don’t make the whole entire game. They definitely play a little part, but as long as it’s Diablo gameplay and you can tell you’re playing Diablo, it will all be fine.

  3. It’s just one of those little things, like a bearskin rug next to the hearth in your family den. You don’t need it. I mean, for godsake’s it’s a dead bear. With the head still attached. But, it makes us feel all warm and cozy anyway, so we “need it.” I personally feel like..they should have kept it a little bit more dungeon-ey but I think it will be fine the way it is. I also think that this will, in a way, open up the game to more casual gamers. It’s “normal”, for the most part. Not everyone is into uber Gothic dungeons and Castle’s like most of us nerdy game fellows seem to be.

  4. Well the thing about diablo is that it didnt have to impress us with super bright colours like all the mario games. But since i like games taking a new direction for the hell of it i say give em all blizzard.

  5. As far as I know, this colorfull screens, they’ve shown so far, are from early parts of the game. They want to start in a kind of cheery-glossy world, and the more you progress through the game, the darker and grimmer it gets.
I like the idea, that the world changes and gets creepier, the farther you go on your path to hell.
