The 2009 BAFTA Winners

baftaJust like those oh-so-endearing video game lists, video game awards provide much fodder for us to analyze, debate and generally moan about. And don’t you worry, I like to join right in!

Whenever they get around to it, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), does a video game awards show much like the Oscars, which leads to the big “Best Game” award handed out at the end of the night. The end result for this year shows that they awarded a robust and surprisingly diverse list of titles. Something to keep in mind is that they didn’t do the awards last year, so it looks like these cover more than just 2008.

Definitely a unique group of games there, no? While I’m not a fan of the Super Mario Galaxy pick, you’ve got to give them credit for not giving into the hype surrounding games like GTA IV or Gears of War 2, which, while good, aren’t exactly offering anything new in terms of game design. I’m also not entirely sure about who was smoking what for the Best Story award given to COD4.

What are your thoughts?

  1. Yeah, I was lolwtfbbq at CoD4 getting Story. Oh well. I suppose they just needed to acknowledge how awesome CoD4 was and decided to say, “Uh, yeah. Russians, terrorists, nukes. Win.”

  2. I don’t think COD4 deserved the story. However I do like how in every single COD game since the first has had some of the same characters like Cpt. Price

It makes me happy to see one of my favorite series get so many awards! ๐Ÿ˜€
