GamerSushi Asks: Halo Killer?

halo-killerEver since Halo claimed the console FPS throne, several games have come and gone to try to take the title “Halo Killer”. As if all of FPS-dom were some huge hill that could be overtaken, and fans would automatically shift their allegiances to this new god-like app with the ability to fell Master Chief and his minions.

Personally, I find that to be a load of garbage, as does The Goozex Report, which has an interesting article up discussing how Sony May Never Have a Halo Killer. While many Sony games have tried, none have come close, and honestly, I don’t see it happening any time soon. Not because of any deficiency of the system, it’s just the fan base is so large I can’t see it being slain and won over.

Not even with Killzone 2, which Sony expects to outsell MGS4 (seriously). Personally, while I’m excited about a lot of games for the PS3 this year, Killzone 2 just isn’t even on my radar. It’s like everyone forgets that the first one was just mediocre.

So what do you guys think? Do you see a Halo Killer coming along any time in this generation? And is Killzone 2 actually going to be any good? Tell us your thoughts!

  1. again with the consoles… the half life series bla blah blah… its been said before. The idea of a console is fundementally flawed and undermines the capability of a game to fulfill its potential due to console-related isses, and on the reverse can have a negative effect of the experience of playing a game.

  2. Kill zone always looks like a combine playing counter strike…

Well anyway, it’s hard to beat Halo. It should take a while until there’s a killer.
Kind of like, a month’s work of meetings, another month’s work of consepting, 2 years of developing/programing, and another year for debugging.

  3. It’s funny, whenever a Sony fanboy speaks about Killzone 2 and how “amazing” it is, they do not speak of an awesome story, great singleplayer, great gameplay, or a extremely fun multiplayer. No, all they mention is graphics. And yes, like you said, they need to be reminded how mediocre the first was. I think it’s just the only hype train they can jump onto right now, so that’s what they are doing.

Haha, care to be more specific? Just sounded like a bunch of vague talk to me. I respect PC gamers and all, but seriously, console gaming is here to stay, so you should probably get used to it. And the fact of the matter is that all of the best PC game developers of yesteryear are NOW developing for console.

  5. We should stop worrying about console-specific issues and console wars and all that junk. What gaming really needs is a way for cross-platform games to play with eachother – cross-platform. Like, playing TF2 on a 360 with a PC player.

    …Also pigs should fly.

Did you see all the games coming for the PS3? And the lack of games coming for the 360? Trust me, Killzone 2 is the least of the hype for Sony Fanboys.

I don’t care if Sony ever has a Halo killer. If I wanted to play Halo, I would get a 360. They just need to do what they do.

And Eddy is right, KIllzone was kinda average.

Theres no games to look forward on the 360 right now because they don’t announce them 5 years in advance 😛 and yes like everyone else says…Killzone one was pretty bad.

Kalgros, we aren’t talking 5 years in advance. We are talking 2009. We had a post about what the PS3 has for 09 and what the 360 has in 09…there is a huge gap and Sony is ahead. That could change, but based on what we know, 09 is looking like Sony’s year, just like 07 and 08 were Microsoft’s.

  9. “Halo-Killer” is kind of a misnomer, just like “killer app”.

Really, no game should be trying to kill Halo. If you spend all your development time trying to out-do Bungie’s monolith, you’ll ultimately end up falling far short of a good shooter.

That’s the problem with the industry, trying to one up the other guy. That seems to be mostly on the PR side, as the Killzone guys have mentioned that they never set out to explicitly make a Halo-killer.

If the game is hyped as a “Halo-Killer”, reviewers will be unfairly biased when it comes time to put Killzone on the docket.

Pre-release impressions do taint an opinion of a game, whether it’s acknowledged or not. To be truthful, if I was part of the Killzone team, I’d be trying to avoid all comparisons to Halo. As great as the Halo trilogy is, run and gun shooters should be on their way out.

  10. I can’t believe how over hyped this game is. I’m not gonna buy it just to spite Sony for not bringing back a GOOD game like Shadow of the Colossus

Team ICO is working on something, so don’t damage your calm.

Lol, cross plat-form isn’t exactly fair to the console players, for example p.c. hacks, better controls, developer’s console, mods….would completely alter console gaming.

  13. Not gonna happen. I honestly don’t see why everyone is so omgasmic about Killzone 2. I seriously doubt KZ2 will be any better than KZ1, let alone dethrone Halo, which has a huge community of zealots and such.

  14. Has anyone here played Call of Duty 4? That game is the de facto best fps in this generation. After playing CoD4, i can’t even stand the garbage that is halo. and killzone 2 looks sort of like a futuristic cod4. I hate all this halo bullshit; halo is pure hype Once you play CoD4, you cannot go back.

  15.
PLaystation Official Magazine just gave it a 5 out of 5…no review is online though…have to see what it says.
I hate these reviews. I mean, do you really think the company that has been pushing this game for years to really give it a bad score if it deserves one? Seroously

  16. I never trust Official whatever magazines. I mean, the guys are being paid to be fanboys, essentially. Doesn’t mean they review wrong, I just have never trusted them for any console.

  17. I agree, Eddy. I don’t trust Nintendo Power. The score means nothing, I would like to read the review, but they don’t post it online.

  18.
I remember when Dark Cloud was meant to be a Zelda Killer.

Uh no. It hurt the game, which is a shame, b/c I loved it.
DARK CLOUD YAY! I loved it and Dark Chronicle. Toan, Xaio, Max and Monica… :’) beautiful games.
I actually quite liked the first Killzone. Not Halo, but I did quite like it. The Halo series isn’t anything to shout about I think. the first one was amazing, the second was mediocre and the third was overhyped/overrated/overeverything. I love the books though because the universe is so lovingly created. So, story was all really that kept me going.
