Nintendo Bitch Slaps the Competition in November Sales

Ouch. I mean, so far this generation we know that Nintendo is first, Microsoft is second and Sony is third. That just seems to be the way of things, even though I think that order should be completely swapped up, with the Wii at a dead last place because of its atrocious games.

So while it’s not shocking that Nintendo came in first yet again in November, the truly shocking thing is the margin of consoles. Nintendo sold 2 million Wiis last month. That’s right. 2 freaking mil. I can’t even fathom how these things are still flying off the shelves that quickly.

Official numbers after the jump!

1. Nintendo Wii – 2.04 million units
2. Nintendo DS – 1.57 million units
3. Microsoft Xbox 360 – 836,000 units
4. Sony PSP – 421,000 units
5. Sony PlayStation 3 – 378,000 units
6. Sony PlayStation 2 – 206,000 units

Staggering, really. I guess that the PS3 is still having trouble outselling the PS2 as well, it seems.

What do you guys think of this? Interesting numbers, no?

  1. It’s a trap!

Also, a huge part of it is the hype. People hear the Wii is great from their non-gaming friends, and then they want one. Plus, it’s got the branding power of Nintendo.

To be honest, though, I thought this would only carry Nintendo through one holiday season until people started seeing it for the fad that it is, but unfortunately for us hardcore gamers, that hasn’t been the case.

Even Microsoft is claiming that their sales have gone up 33% since adding the NXE and avatars, so they’re convinced these casual things are what’s making people buy video games right now. I don’t like where it’s heading.

MS, maybe you’ve been making more sales since you released the NXE around freaking Black Friday, and you were going to make those sales anyway.

Claiming that the NXE has anything to do with their console sales being bumped up is a fallacy. Your average mom or dad probably has no idea about the NXE, or that the 360 even had a different dashboard at one point.

The NXE, as much as I like it, would never sell consoles. The games are the sellers, obviously. If console makers keep pandering to the casual, I wonder what will happen to more “hardcore” games like Gears, Halo, Resistance and Metal Gear. Those games hardly appeal to anyone who doesn’t want to mash 15 buttons.

Although, some games that are considered casual seem to be taking the jump to a more hardcore setting. The new Guitar Hero took it to that level, at least for me. The drums are freaking hard on expert, and I’ve been drumming for 10 years!

Anyways, I think that the best thing that we as gamers can hope for is that the casual audience realizes how terrible most Wii games actually are, outside of playing them at parties. (Or box socials, for the older folks) Maybe down the line, casual and hardcore will find a nice balance, but it still seems that the gaming industry is on the precipice of literally imploding under the need to pander to everybody.

  3. I think it has more to do with Media. Everyone on the media talks about the Wii and how it flies off the shelves. People not knowing much about games go “oooo that one must be good.” and then they decide to buy it. Or some people just stumble into a store looking for something see it in stock and then grab one because they sell insanely fast.

  4. Wow. Actually, you know what – I’m not so surprised. Since Nintendo was, like, parceling their production levels of Wiis, now is when everyone can find and claim a Wii since they aren’t going out of stock by 7:38.

Now all Nintendo has to do is come out with some GREAT games. And at least, like, seven of them.

  5. But ya know what, 2.04 million people ALREADY own a 360 XD

Also, if I was a parent, I would rather get my kid a Wii. Its limited online stuff and lack of games like GTA make it ideal for a worried parent. Least they wont learn how to talk trash on Mario Strikers Online

Biggest ‘Bitch Slap’ here, Sony sold PS2s hahaha

You guys out side of Japan get all the good games. Here, every thing is cartoons… anime… how strong you can squeeze a teddy bear.
I can’t even get Madden Football 08(which I rly want for no reason)!
