Fanboy Battle: Most Overrated Games in 2008

Get the boxing gloves out, dudes. We’ve said time and time again that we love lists. We flock to them like they are the life-bread from heaven, glorious nectar from the gods. I’m not sure what invisible quality it is that makes them so addictive, but gamers love them and so does GamerSushi.

Anywho, Fidgit just posted its list of the 10 Most Overrated Games of 2008, and I bet there will be a few surprises on there (eliciting an “oh snap” or two) as well as a few that you would expect. Get ready to rant a little bit…

List after the jump!

10. Civilization IV: Colonization
9. Left 4 Dead
8. Burnout: Paradise
7. Spore
6. Wii Fit
5. Mass Effect
4. Metal Gear Solid 4
3. Braid
2. Little Big Planet
1. Grand Theft Auto IV

For the record, Mass Effect came out in 2007. And Left 4 Dead? Them’s fighting words, son. Though I agree with the number 1. What do you guys think?

1. I can’t say i’ve played any of them, but i can’t believe that Left 4 Dead is on that list. Yeah it got lots of hype, and it’s a zombie game (there are tons of ’em) but come on, it looks awesome and every one i’ve heard talk about it says it’s really good.

2. YES RANT TIME!

*Ahem* WTF MGS4? Overratted? >:(
Nah but seriously, it wasn’t over rated, more over publicised so that when it did come we knew what to expect in the first two acts. The rest was very well hidden and very enjoyable. Anti-MGSers will no doubt be lurking in the shadows waiting to pounce on me so this may turn hairy. I don’t see how LBP is overrated. From the wealth of vids we’ve seen it has seemed to offer us the ‘unlimited potential’ thing right?

3. Mass Effect? Overrated, yes, but a little too late.

I agree that Left 4 Dead is overrated, but I’m one of those crazy people who thinks that L4D isn’t a good as everyone believes. I still love it, though.

GTA IV seems to be catching the hate train these days. Metal Gear 4 wasn’t necessarily overrated, it just had expectations that it could never live up to, but it came damn close in my opinion.

4. I just thought the story, characters and gameplay were perfectly balanced. I guess you probably wouldn’t get it lest you have been playing it since the first though. If it’s the story you don’t get, don’t worry. Not many do. Only us with a doctorate in Snake Studies acn decipher the riddles wrpped in enigmas smothered in puzzles.

I just don’t like the gameplay or the story. All of it,lol.

6. But you’ve still missed out on MGS1! The best of the series by FAR. And stripped of the other superfluous stuff that clogged up the rest of the series.

But yeah, I don’t see how Left 4 Dead can go on this list. Anger!

7. The story I can understand. It’s like marmite: You love it or you hate it. But the gameplay? A tactical stealth game with gadgets which would put James Bond to shame! They all have a use of sorts (some more obvious than others: playboy to distract guards or look at? WOOT!). The controls had been tightly honed to suit the style of play with many ways to play it ranging from the simple left or right door but in act 2 the huge areas you can go through with multple paths were epic in execution. Minimal slowdown in large scale battles. Another nice touch is that if you want stealth, go on ahead. If you want a shoot ’em up you got it! I’ll agree with Mitch that it aint perfect but it was still a 10 (or 9.9 recurring I guess).

If you mean 5 minutes gameplay 5 hours cutscene, MGS4 got the balance right. But MGS1 did have many nice set pieces though. Wall rappelling has never been so much fun. Memory card reading was awe inspiring too but (hilariously) redone in MGS4.

I liked MGS3, too. Because it was a throwback to Big Boss, it was missing a lot of the plot threads that started plaguing Metal Gear after Sons of Liberty. Plus, it didn’t have Raiden. (Well, it did, but you could slit his throat and stuff him in a locker. Also, commies!)

Good call on Mass PC, I totally forgot about that.

10. i think they just put Left 4 Dead on there to piss everyone off so this article would circulate around the internet and people would fight about it such as right here

11. No, I played the Twin Snakes on the Gamecube. Didn’t care for it, either. just not my type of game. I played all of MGS2 though and it was ok. But only ok.

12. BUT TWIN SNAKES WAS MGS1 WITH UPDATED GRAPHICS, CONTROLS AND CUTSCENES! WHY CAN YOU NOT SEE THE BRILLIANCE ANTHONY? WHY? Sorry for shouting.

13. Well let’s see…

10. Civilization IV: Colonization
Never really liked these kinds of games, so I didn’t get it.
9. Left 4 Dead
Can’t even think how this made it on the list. Compared to some games, it wasn’t even that hyped at all. And it rocked.
8. Burnout: Paradise
Didn’t get it.
7. Spore
Yeah, I agree. It’s fun for awhile, but then it gives way to tedium.
6. Wii Fit
Should be much, much higher up. It’s not even a game.
5. Mass Effect
I didn’t buy into the hype to much in the first place, so I was pleasantly surprised on this one, and got a solid 3 play throughs out of it.
4. Metal Gear Solid 4
Yes. Yesyesyesyesyes. The first 2 or 3 were good, but 4 was a cutscene with a few sprinkles of gameplay.
3. Braid
I enjoyed Braid a good deal. It’s not a very conventional game, but it was fun. Was it hyped at all, though?
2. Little Big Planet
LBP was solid, but just not something I could get into. I can see how people love it, but it’s not my cup of tea.
1. Grand Theft Auto IV
Waiting on a PC patch before I touch this one, so no comment.

And that’s my take on things.

14.
No, I played the Twin Snakes on the Gamecube. Didn’t care for it, either. just not my type of game. I played all of MGS2 though and it was ok. But only ok.
Fool! Twin Snakes is just not the MGS experience. The cut scenes way too cheesy, and the AI is too advanced for simplistic levels designed for the PS1, making it ridiculously hard. I played Twin Snakes for about an hour before I was done with it, and MGS is one of my favorite games of all time.

15. Too difficult AI? Try very easy mode (oooh! Burn! plz dont ban me). The AI was as dumb as in MGS2 ie. relatively and you complain about cheesy cutscenes? Isn’t that not what MGS is all about? And the updated Grey Fox scenes were amazing like the all new fist fights and the guard massacre scene beautifully realised. Best port ever. Well, maybe RE4: Wii Edition was better.

16.
Too difficult AI? Try very easy mode
When you take into account that the levels were built for soldiers that were dumber than dumb, then yeah. Upgrading them to simply stupid still means that it’s harder than what the environment was designed for.

17. I never had any problems. But the guards could follow FOOTPRINTS IN SNOW on the PS1 that was amazing! This difficult guard problem you speak of… wait, Twin Snakes isn’t even on that list and we’re bickering about pointless last gen games! The future is ahead! Onwards and upwards to MGS5 or whatever Hideo has in store for us! *zoooooooom!*

18.
Onwards and upwards to MGS5 or whatever Hideo has in store for us! *zoooooooom!*
I don’t know about MGS5. Snake is dead after 4 right? It’s kind of hard to play as a dead body :P. But, I hope hideo thinks up with something new. I kinda thought the MGS series(Until MGS3) was a bit too similar. You could of predicted the story.

19. Flame me however you want… but surprisingly… i’m not surprised of left 4 dead being on the list…. Idk… don’t take this the wrong way, I was in the beta and it was seriously fun, but a zombie game without a story or backround information isn’t really appealing to me. And GTA4 and spore was definitely on the right places on that list.

20. What the hell is Left 4 Dead doing on this list?! It was an amazing game! And the only reason it was “hyped” was because it was made by Valve. That’s whats nice about Valve. They leave it to their multitudes to do their advertisement and everything. The company themselves has a very modest and humble way about them. And Gordon Freeman.
Little Big Planet should be lower on the list. It wasn’t THAT bad.
Other than that, it’s fine.

21. Bah, I agree with a few of these, but Mass Effect on PC wasn’t as highly rated as the original to begin with. To say that it was overrated is…kinda dumb. And Left 4 Dead? I’ll have to agree to disagree on that one, I love the game.

22. 1. SSBB (aka SSBM recycled with shitty online)
2. IGN giving GTAIV and MGS4 perfect 10s WTF. (though still good games)
3. Spore (will write made it so it has to be good…right?)
4. Guitar Hero WT (all the equipment is broken and music maker sucks)
5. Resistance 2 (still no hook like COD and Halo)
6. COD WOW (riding on the success of COD4 and bringing barely anything new to the table.)
7. Braid (fun but overrated, getting GOTY awards and is not even the best Download game this year, BC:Rearmed and MM9 are better)
8. MGS4 by itself, (good but slow and not as fun as other games)
9. Fable 2 (cause the Brits love it and we don’t)
10. PS3 Home, (I have a life)

ment 2 say COD: WaW oops.

24. GTA 4 i loved it but yeah i can see how it made # 1 spot, terrific story and i love the cover system. Gotta say i think GTA 4 is much better than saints row. L4D i bought it after nazi zombies on Cod5, its good but no where near good as ppl rave on about it in my opinion

25. Yeah, I’m all for calling people out and saying something’s overrated, but it really just seems like this guy took a few of the best games of the year and slapped them on his list for no reason at all. The L4D one is the one that really bugs me. I hear people saying it’s fun, but in all honesty, as Cossack said, it really wasn’t hyped up all that much.

26. I think Haze got over-rated (even though I quite liked it), it got pretty good previews but not very good reviews. Fallout 3, although awesome was also slightly over-rated because of Oblivion.

27. This was written by some guy I have never heard of, on some website I have never seen and he explained his choices in less then 20 words.

Sorry, but I’m not buying it.

28. I’ve never understood why GTAIV is considered overrated. I think it’s a tremendous game that deserve more praise

29.
I’ve never understood why GTAIV is considered overrated. I think it’s a tremendous game that deserve more praise
Killing cops, running over people, stealing cars and trucks, having sex, doesn’t sound so tremendous to me.

But there’s so much more to Liberty City than just that. I didn’t realize how much there was to do until I finished the game and just started messing around. To me, it’s one of the best games ever.
