WoW: Blizzard To Charge For Custom Characters?

Blizzard has taken masochism to a new extreme over this weekend. Never have I seen a company so content to drop nuclear bombs on itself in so short a time as they have, announcing to the world that yes, “We will take your money with us smiling to our graves”.

The newest in the trilogy of wtf-inducing news items is that World of Warcraft is about to get paid character customization in the future. Want to have a special hat that nobody else has? Need the newest leather boots to impress the ladies? It’s just like middle school again, only you’re paying a monthly fee.

This bit of info comes from Warcry, which attended a Q&A session over the weekend at Blizzcon:

When asked to expand upon a button found by sifting through the Lich King beta’s data files named “Paid Character Customization,” [World of Warcraft production director J. Allen] Brack initially hesitated to give any answer at all. Several questions later, he went back to the matter, saying that he could, in fact, confirm that World of Warcraft would eventually have some form of paid character customization, though they themselves hadn’t yet worked out any details.

So there you have it. Granted, you don’t have to pay to customize your character in every instance, just that more unique customizations will cost you money. But even still, you only know where this leads… Want to start off at level 30? Pay an extra $15 bucks a month! Need a stronger weapon? Pay an extra $2 a month!

What are your thoughts on this? Is the sky falling yet?

  1. Screw Blizzard. Seriously this is so stupid. I can only see this as being so horribly stupid. Some really infamous guy on a server will get his custom armor set he paid $100-200 for and then everyone will be like “OMFG I NEED 2 PAY 4 A 1337 SWORD!!! $100!!!”

Seriously screw this company. Look at Halo 3, people bitch and whine about Recon so badly. On WoW I can only imagine it being 10x as bad.

Why should I even buy Diablo III? Lord knows they will make me pay to use the wizard and the next class.

  2. from the sounds of blizzard charging for everything they’re doing atm, they might aswell make every game they do free. that way we all could get tons of copies out the shops to make them bankrupt and WoW would be no more… Hurrah!

  3. Even if they make it only things like clothing or perhaps even pay to max out a character, its stupid for all those who put time into the game. They know they will profit from it, its just a bunch of crap.

**thanks for the edit on the above post XD I hate there not being an edit feature :P**

  4. lame…. the point is to EARN the things in-game not pay for them
if they take that away PvP will be flooded with ppl wearing full T7(after expansion) or the next season of arena gear and you will need to buy it too if you want to keep up
    this is lame… no lie

  5. Meh, this has been coming for a long time now. I assume that every item/hairstyle/pet that you can pay for will be purely cosmetic, which is fine because its along the same lines as getting a special mount for going to Blizzcon, playing the TCG, etc. If not, I’m just going to stop playing WoW. I know of quite a few people who would be with me too.

  6. I’m going to be honest. I’m not a WoW fan. In fact, I’m proud that I’m not a WoW fan. Starcraft ONE for the win, but no. This is ridiculous. What is wrong with Blizzard?! Is the guy in charge of Blizz insane, on drugs, and intent on suicide!? They’ve lost probably a third or more of the Starcraft sales – but maybe people will buy just one version of it and settle for that – wrecked their fanbase, and severely crippled WoW’s status as the most popular MMO.

Frankly, that’s just a statistic. My brother plays FFXI (the MMO) non-stop. He has a lot of friends who used to play WoW but left because the price was too high, the game was too boring, they wanted to try out FFXI and found FFXI more fun, or usually all of the above. Damn! No wonder Blizzard’s asking for more munah.

Oh, and why does WoW have to degrade to this Maple Story level of mediocre MMO? Why must one pay for the “cool stuff” that you need to customize your character? That’s stupid. It’s an irritating way of raking in extra cash and pissing off people who don’t feel like paying 5 more bucks a month for some crappy bunch of pixels on the screen.

That’s why I don’t like MMO’s, and this adds to my hatred of WoW. Now, I feel a lot more justified.

  7. So…it’s official. People working for Blizzard have an IQ equivalent of a bow of Jello. Well. When they run there company into the ground they can sell there games to big corporations for even more money. I can see Nintendo jumping on Diablo 3. Or Sony buying the rights to Starcraft for a game or movie. Maybe thats the plan. Get awful then sell the names for big bucks.
