New, Unique Ideas Coming to Next Zelda

Poor Link. He’s gone from 2D to 3D to cel shading to dark and gritty. He’s been all over the place.

Actually, come to think of it, the only thing that’s changed about him since Ocarina of Time is the way he looks. The core of all of the Zelda games has remained unchanged for some time now, but it looks like Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind Link, has implied he wants to rectify this for the next iteration of the franchise.

According to him, something new is coming.

Miyamoto had this to say:

I don’t necessarily think it will change that drastically, but I think that Zelda is a franchise that does need some big new unique ideas. And so the team right now is very focused on trying to find those ideas.

Personally, I find this to be quite exciting. I’ve bemoaned the Zelda franchise for a few years, because it’s just new art slapped onto Ocarina of Time in terms of its gameplay approach. While that game was incredible, it just highlights how much each new addition is not Ocarina of Time.

What do you guys think could spice up the Zelda franchise? Back at GDC 2007, a first person demo of Twilight Princess was shown, but I’m not sure I would be in favor of turning Zelda into Oblivion. What do you think? Should Link talk? Should it be turn-based? Should it be a cart racer? Let’s hear it.

  1. First!!

I grew up with Legend of Zelda. While I didn’t play the NES or SNES Zeldas when they came out – because I wasn’t around during the 8-Bit Wars – I have super-fond memories of Ocarina of Time and the GBA Zeldas. As a result, Ocarina of Time is #1 on my Top Whatever Games of All Ever. Also, Twilight Princess – which I got for the Wii – was amazing, and felt like Ocarina of Time, with a lot of improvements and new stuff that gave a unique twist, but never felt out-of-place.
Now I hear that they’ll change Zelda. That’s cool. Honestly, I’m happy that Nintendo is CONSIDERING altering their franchises, even SLIGHTLY.
While Zelda may feel different, it’ll still be an Action/Adventure/Puzzle game, and still will probably rock. But I doubt they’ll turn it into Oblivion or something. Oblivion is too advanced, too large in scope, and I don’t care if Miyamoto dies and someone fills his position – it will not become something that isn’t mostly recognizable. I’m not worried.

  2. Oh yeah, I definitely liked Wind Waker, but even then, I could feel the formula beginning to wear thin. And all the fetch quests later in the game nearly made me throw my controller through the TV screen.

  3. Shouldn;t Zelda be at TGS? A new zelda title comes out every 3 yrs, and we here about the new title 2 yrs after the previous. Even if we do not see Zelda at TGS, we should see it soon.

  4. Uhm. I dunno. I mean truthfully my favorite Zelda games were Legend of Zelda DX (the gameboy color one where you could get the different color clothes and be uber godly), Legend of Zelda Oracle of time and Oracle of Seasons (more gameboy color games. Epic story if anyone’s played back when I thought nintendo kicked ass and didnt puzzy foot around). I think Zelda could do with more of a focused story actually. Like in Oracle of time and Seasons. A story that connects the games. Where the story actually progresses to a real point, instead of just collecting/killing the same guy over n over. It’s like mario. He’s great, but if they didn’t come out with tennis and cart racing and even some super star saga he’d just be the plummer again. Then again, I’m the guy that says pokemon would be soooo uber cool if they brought back the guys who thought of Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal (the ones with the little phones and the two worlds you could travel through. EPIC!!) so yeah don’t trust my judgement. But I think Zelda needs a story. Same chars, since it’s still Zelda. But a story.

  5. Oh and a more Shadow of the Colossus element of gameplay where you can traverse the world easier. ^^ Just not do anything or too much, like in the Zelda games of date. One thing I’ve hated about Zelda games is that you had to go from dungeon 1 to 2 to 3 all the time. What if I really liked dungeon 3? and wanted flippers just so i could be nerdy and slash some Zora’s and then put down or something?
