Introducing: Nintendo DS-i

2 Oct 2008 | Posted by

Maybe they’re trying a little too hard to be like Apple with the name, but nonetheless, Nintendo has announced the DS-i, the new Nintendo DS.

The DS-i will feature a .3 megapixel camera (640 x 480), larger screens and no GBA slot. There will also be an SD card slot to save those pictures onto, as well as some audio enhancements. All in all, this will run you about $180 early next year, whenever this thing comes to the US.

If you’re interested, Kotaku has some good pictures of the DS-i ready for your perusal.

Personally, the tiny camera seems a tad underwhelming to me. I was hoping for something a little more substantial, it just seems like a slightly improved DS Lite. If, as the rumors say, this is supposed to compete with the PSP in terms of a media device, I’m not really seeing it from this small list of features. But maybe I’m crazy. Thoughts?

Hmm… Sounds tempting, but no GBA slot? The DS’s inability to play GameBoy and GBC games was bad enough but now we don’t even get to play GBA games? I don’t like the sound of that. Though it looks like it’ll have improved interenet capabilities and I’m really wondering what kind of games and other stuff that we’ll be able to download off the DS-i store.

What a disappointment. I love my DS more than my PS3 and I really was not looking forward to them trying to milk me out of more money.

After seeing this, I have nothing to worry about. I don’t want a camera, I don’t care about audio improvements enough to warrant this kind of purchase.

    Phail.

Yeah, it seems like maybe Nintendo doesn’t get the whole media thing… I mean, we ARE talking about the dudes that chose cartridges over CDs and lost the Final Fantasy proper franchise…

Yeah, I don’t feel like I would even trade my old DS for this in an even swap…there is nothing for me here.

I love my 64! I play it much more than I do my playstation. :p And they did try CD’s for the 64 in Japan, and it failed.

I don’t know about you guys but this is a WANT for me. Who needs a GBA slot when you have the GBA it self?

It’s a convience, why dig up another system when you can play it’s games on the one you’re already using? Plus the new features don’t really warrant a buy for me, especially since I got my DS Lite just last year. I originally had planned to not even buy a lite and just keep using my original DS, but the battary wasn’t lasting as long, and after my friend got his own DS lite, I decided it was time for an upgrade, and my old DS had a dead pixel.

I would probably stick with the old one.

It failed b/c it was an add on to a console and those don’t do well. Plus it had little support.
