Rumor: Mass Effect Movie?

As we all know, the world of video game movies has been a tough one for studio execs to crack. Nearly every movie based on a video game has been wretched, and it just doesn’t seem to show any signs of letting up.

However, it seems that Avi Arad, one of the bigwigs responsible for Marvel’s recent comeback, has optioned the rights from EA to produce a movie based on the RPG Mass Effect. Pretty wild.

If there’s any universe/story out there that could translate well to the big screen, it would be Mass Effect’s. One of the things that I think is terribly underrated in gaming is story/mythology/atmosphere, and Mass Effect had those qualities coming through in spades. I loved the universe, and I think it’s got a lot of potential.

On the flip side to that, though- playing Mass Effect is already like playing a sci-fi film anyway, only YOU get to control the outcome. Wouldn’t Mass Effect lose some of its appeal if you’re just watching its events unfold for 2 hours, rather than adventuring with the characters yourself and shaping the story as you see fit for 15 hours or more?

How many of you guys played Mass Effect? What do you think about this?

  1. I for one hope it never makes it to the movies. Because we all know it’s going to have a very “graphic sex scene” at which point, someone (not mentioning any names) will give it a hard time even though they never see the film.

  2. There were many cinecmatic aspects that I loved about it. Obviously they couldn’t have all the planets but oh well on that end. I honestly think that it’s already movie like and would probably translate better then other films.

  3. I think lots of games would make good movies, they just take the good parts of the game out and make a movie they already wanted to make and throw a video game brand around it.
