Star Wars Retro Action

If you’re familiar at all with the Gametrailers “Retrospective” features, then you know that they totally rule. Typically, they will do several weeks of retrospective videos leading up to the release of a new and exciting game.

This time, in anticipation of The Force Unleashed, the “Retrospective” series has focused on Star Wars and all of the videogames that the popular science fiction franchise has spawned in its wake. They are all the way up to 10 installments now, but I thought I’d share number 7, which features Shadows of the Empire and KOTOR, two of the better Star Wars games ever made (though nostalgia may be helping Shadows out a lot).

Ah, memories. Did you guys ever play these games?

  1. I really enjoy playing rouge squadron. It’s very simple but fun. Hope that they will make one with online multiplayer.

I never heard of Shadows of the Empire or KOTOR. Google and wiki time…

  2. PLayed? I MASTERED Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron and KOTOR,lol.

Seriously, on SofE, I found every challenge point on Jedi Master Level. I was da man.

  3. Oh man! Shadows of the Empire is retro? I remember playing the origional X-Wing game for PC. Five floppy disks of pure joy! It was probably one of the best tactical flying games I’ve played. Incrediably hard, though. Try taking on a Star Destroyer with circa 1993 AI team-mates.

  4. Yeah, it’s pretty wild that with the current gen technology we’ve got going, we haven’t seen a really great X-Wing game in a while. Imagine the amount of enemies they could pile on screen…

Btw, one thing that did disappoint me about this video is that they didn’t bag on KOTOR 2 hard enough, in my mind. It paled in comparison to the original.

  5. Well, with LucasArts pretty much closing it’s doors after the release of Fracture, my bet is we won’t see an X-Wing game for quite a while. If George had any more sense, he’s pass off the IP to a developer with experience making tactical flight combat sims. (Any developer names escape me. I’m too ingrained into FPses now!)

Factor 5 tried to add a bit of tactics to their latest Rogue Squadron game, but it was pretty limited.

With a good development house behind it, X-Wing 2 could probably be the kick in the pants Star Wars needs.(excepting the Force Unleashed, which I am really enjoying so far)

I don’t think ole George has that much input into Lucasarts. So I would not blame him or anything.

And Lucasarts is not closing shop, are they?

  7. No, my mistake. LucasArts is not closing shop, but they did recently lay off alot of employees, so I imagine their ability to make triple A titles would be diminished.

Maybe I was thinking about Ensemble Studios..

Anyways, anything Star Wars has to get run by George first, as he approves all things canon…Though at this rate it just looks like he has a stamp with his signature on it.

  8. He approves certain things regarding canon, but as for which devs get to make the games, I am sure that is something he doesn’t want to bother with.

  9. *concedes defeat.

I was kind of using George’s name as a catch-all. He definitely does not decide on which developers use his IPs. That’s a business decision for the LucasArts bigwigs.
