Metal Gear Not So Solid

I am not a typical hardcore gamer nerd. I have long since accepted that while I am a huge nerd, the demands for a robust sex life call me away from my nerdly pleasures more often than not. I do not replay games on harder levels, instead preferring to move on to a new game entirely. I do not collect Achievements or Trophies, I find it as enjoyable as homework. And I do not see the big deal about a number of giant game franchises.

I didn’t play Halo until last year. Not having an Xbox, it was impossible to play it on my PS2, though I tried. When I finally booted it up, the first 2 or 3 levels were kind of bland. I didn’t see what the big deal was. But then, out of nowhere, I loved it. It was fun, the AI was great and I saw the big deal. And it was good.

So then I played Halo 2. What a disappointment. The story was a rehash of the first game. The gameplay was a rehash of the first game. It felt more like a remake than a sequel and I did not enjoy it nearly as much. So I will likely never play Halo 3 due to that and the fact that I don’t have nor do I want a 360.

But on to the meat of this post: Metal Gear Solid. I missed out on the first game because if it didn’t have “Final” and “Fantasy” in the title on the PS1, I probably didn’t play it. But as I read articles for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of the Patriots online and in magazines, I saw something that I had never really seen before. More people were talking about the plot than the gameplay. I assumed that the story of this series must be incredible and once I played it, I found out I was right. It was incredible! Incredibly terrible!

It was at this point that I discovered that many video game fans must be functionally retarded. How else could such a stupid plot garner so much attention? After I finished the game, I thought back to my time with it and while it was ok, I never really had fun playing it. So I chalked it up to a fluke and went on with my life.

Jump to today. I got Metal Gear Solid 4 from Gamefly.com and I started playing it. I don’t know if it is just me or what, but I just don’t like this game. The controls are clumsy and cumbersome, the cut scenes are too long, but at times brilliant and other times they are just juvenile. Does Kojima expect anyone to take him seriously with shots of boobies and poop jokes? It’s no secret that all this guy wants to do is make a movie and while Hollywood messes up a lot by giving Uwe Boll money to make movies, I think we should write a letter and THANK Hollywood for not allowing Kojima to make a bloated piece of crap like we all know he would. You just know the movie would come in $400 million dollars over budget and have a 6 hour length and need an online database to explain it.

But the gist of all this is that I don’t like the game. It’s not fun to me. The combat is boring, the stealth is arbitrary at times. I never really liked stealth games, but still, for a game that is supposed to be one of the best stealth games ever, I thought it might even sway me a bit, but alas, to no avail. I don’t hate Metal Gear Solid, I just don’t like it and I don’t get it. Are there any game series out there that you guys just don’t “get”?

  1. A series I don’t get would have to be kingdom hearts. I HATE the fact that all my favorite final fantasy hero’s are running around helping Donald and Goofy. I wish they didn’t put Disney characters in. They don’t seem to fit the seriousness of the situation. People losing there worlds and the ones that come to rescue it are Sora (which is a cool character) and Donald and Goofy?

  2. I kind of agree with you on that. The KH games are kinda fun, but are button mashers with another crappy story that is hard to follow. The Disney Worlds are rehashes of their movie’s plots and bring very little to the table. It could be done a lot better.

  3. I think the reason you hate the MGS series so much is because you started with 2. The plot in mgs2 is very confusing and sometimes outright stupid. By the end of the game I had no idea what the fuck was actually going on because I expected another plot twist every 5 seconds. I don’t have a ps3 so I haven’t played 4 but the first mgs and mgs3 have great plots that are much easier to understand and cutscenes that aren’t near as long. The gameplay on both is better compared to mgs2 as well. As to series I don’t get, Resident Evil pulled a number on me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the games and the plot is interesting, but what I don’t get is how they did all that shit in raccon city with the zombies and even in Code Veronica went to a new location with zombies. Then in RE4, they change it up to fighting some parasite called Las Plagos in Spain, and now in 5 we’ll be in Africa? I mean I’m still gonna buy re5 and will no doubt enjoy it, but… I’d love it if they would make another RE game that played like the older ones. You know, when it was actually a survival horror game.

  4. If you were a base mgs fan and played through the series, then 4 was awesome, but if it was your first….I can see it from Anthony’s view. One series that I thought was weird was the Madden series…. seriously, it’s mediocre and I don’t know why it’s fun. Go watch football or something. Cause Madden fails. And sells like crazy! o.0000

  5. Resistance is a game I don’t get. I mean the story seems interesting but it just doesn’t seem like it is as good as people say it is. I’ve seen the gameplay and it just seems like any other FPS sci-fi game.

  6. It’s not that the plot is what makes me hate it. It’s really annoying, but the gameplay itself is just not fun. And Kojima’s style where you can tell he thinks very highly of himself just annoys me, also.

I hated RE until RE4, that was one of the best games I have ever played!

Resistance is fun, pick it up and try it one day. The weapons are really unique and make for a good experience.

  7. I like mgs’s gameplay style, it’s interesting. I like fast paced action games too but there’s so many like that it’s fun to play something different every once in a while. That’s why I like games like mgs and pre RE4 RE games. I think I would shit myself if capcom remade RE2 like they did with the first one.

  8. I really can’t keep up with the story with the MGS series. It’s a bit like a episode from “lost”, confusing. But, here again, I envy the designers of the alien looking robot tank thingy. 🙂

  9. i actually like halo. not so the much the games, there mediocre, but if you really nerd-up and read the books they make the halo univers b.a. . (kinda random but good to know, now onto opinion) i think that mgs4 was over rated because (im not a fanboy.) (i swear) it was one of the few games a ps3 owner had to look forward to that was an exclusive. mabey later on ps3 will have games that are the shit, but right now they where off to a slow start, so when something like this came along people bit. and splinter cell. wtf.

  10. I’m sure you can see why I made this account, Anthony. Simply put, you’re an ignorant bastard or mentally retarded.People are entitled to their own opinions, sure, but if you don’t take the time to fully analyze and digest the content on which you’re basing your opinion then you shouldn’t open your mouth. I imagine this won’t get posted for obvious reasons but it will get read by someone. Take care.

I let your comment through b/c it is clearly so stupid that I wanted everyone to see it. You say I need to fully digest and analyze the content I am basing my opinion on.

I am basing my opinion on the experience I have playing a game which I do not find to be FUN.

Why do we play games? Because they are meant to be fun. If I am not having fun, I am sorry if that bothers you. You have the rest of the day to come up with a response without name calling or hatred or I will delete your comments and move on. I am giving you one chance to try again in a civil tone.

  12. Woot, our first flamer. This is a glorious day.

I’m on Act 5 of MGS 4, and I just haven’t cared to finish the game. I actually found the first two acts to be really fun (though the controls for each game in this series have gotten clunkier and clunkier), but after that, you just start playing the game less and less.

However, it is a shame Anthony that you skipped the two best entries to the franchise, MGS1 and MGS 3. Both of those rank in my top 25 of all time, for sure.

But yeah, the plot got ridiculous in number 2, and 4 just seems to be kind of a convoluted extension. Though I must say I still love watching the animation and all of the epic cut scenes, even when they are too long.

  13. To be honest, the only thing that makes mgs2 any fun are the easter eggs and crazy colonel at the very end. but yeah, eddy is very right, mgs1 and mgs3 are the absolute best in the series. I’d love to play mgs4 if I had a ps3. And to “JustToFlame” sorry but you’re an idiot, I love the mgs series too but Anthony made some pretty valid points on why he doesn’t… so he has every right to not like it. Honestly, did you even think about that before you decided to comment? I’m guessing that you didn’t. GG nub.

  14. Hey guys,
What do you think could make a perfect video game? A top-notch story or excellent gameplay mechanics?

P.S. to Eddy, I love playing MGS3, thats one of my favorite games and I also like the motorcycle level of the game. Thanks for mentioning that game! 🙂

    Both.

  16. a story is useless in a game if playing the game is a bitch. but likewise, playing a game is a bitch if you have no direction. but i do like how inventive video games are, if only half the games where a good, well produced movie.
